I can remember my dad using 3 out of your 5 are lures back in the early 70's. I guess some things never change.

I have all those except the Diawa. The kastmaster rainbow is fire and the gold and red stripe. The Thomas rainbow color is good, too. The old school z wobbler and the brads wobbler are great. I have been using Sierra spoons lately, and they work well for trout. I catch multiple species on them too. Large mouth bass, small mouth bass, spotted bass, and pikeminnows.

@splitmilt this is gonna sound a little crazy but try running a Trinidad optimizer #3. You'll catch bigger fish more often. Other spoon like lures that I use are Speedy shiners. Last is Humdingers. Gold and chrome for low light conditions/early morning. As the day progresses, I'll add color. Colors include silver, gold, copper, cop car, fire tiger, red and copper, blue and silver, watermelon and black and white, and rainbow trout are my go tos.

Maybe it'd be different if i had a boat and trolled for trout, but i only bank fish trout, and the best producing spoon for me overall would have to be the 1/4oz metallic perch Kastmaster.

If I could only have one lure to fish the rest of my life for trout, 1/4 oz kastmaster in watermelon would be it

Love spoon fishing for trout. In Western Canada everybody uses Len Thompson, the five of diamonds is a go to. Also do well on the Luhr Jensen Krocodile and recently had success with the Super Duper which has an erratic action unlike any conventional spoon I've seen

I love little Cleo. Usually I catch way more on my spinner but the biggest one on the spoon.

My go to spoons have always been krocodiles and kastmasters. I just got a bunch of Trigger spoons and trigger spoon jr’s from fishhuntshoot that I’m going to try trolling with.

Mepps Syclops is another spoon that I've had quite a bit of success catching fish with over the years. I think another one of the keys for increased catch rates for any spoon that doesn't come with a swivel pre attached is to either use the smallest one you can get away with or tie a loop style knot not when attaching the spoon to the end of your line.

Gibbs Croc hammered brass fire stripe! Not sure if you get it in the states, or if the Luhr Krocodile(which it's a copy of) has it in that color, but here in lower BC its a favorite of many. It does good with coho too I've heard. Love that spoon.

I troll with flies. I set them up behind a typical dodger either flat line or downrigger. They really nail the heck out of rainbows.

Really appreciate the side by side comparisons you do, especially for Kokanee. Have you ever done one comparing different fluorocarbon line diameters?

@@spiltmilt I do appreciate that, and enjoyed that video , but do the fish care? I've always wondered this-w/ all the crap floating around, are fish really spooked by a flouro line because it's 10 or 14 pounds vs. 6? How about running 2 identical rigs-no difference except line diameters? I would absolutely love to see this.

My 7 year old son and I have been doing a lot of side by side trolling tests and he always picks something "cool" looking trying to beat the 3/8ths brass kastamster that I just leave on my rod. He picks wedding rings, rapalas and rooster tails most of the time but nothing ever beats the kastmaster

I haven't had any luck with these spoons in Lake Pend Oreille. Perhaps they will work when the water is colder. I don't know.

Hey Tyler, I’m going out to lake Roosevelt hoping to catch a few Kokanee. I was wondering if it is too late in the season to do this. Also I am using clip weights after seeing your video on how much line to set out to get a certain depth with whatever weight, how much line should I let out before clipping my weight on?

Hi Tyler, I was wondering if you could share a link for the single hooks you swap out on and put on your spoons. I have actually only used spoons for casting and when I was a younger I did really well with the kastmaster in the bay I lived on and I have never really used them in freshwater. Definitely going to give them a try for lake trout. Thanks for the video

Off topic question- do you have a rule of thumb for when kokanee meat turns bad when they start to turn red? I caught a few today that are turning red, the meat seems firm but I’m curious your thoughts
@spiltmilt
@spiltmilt 3 күн бұрын
It’s so variable it’s hard to say but when the meat texture goes soft I generally don’t eat them. Most years I stop harvesting past Sept 1
