Going on trips, I never buy souvenirs at souvenir stalls. I consider this a waste of money and time and space in my bag (I always travel only with hand luggage as a backpack, I never take big luggage, even this time, and I have been in Sri Lanka for 14 months (!), And how experience shows - I'm doing the right thing) But I still always want to bring gifts home, and therefore if something is bought, then something worthwhile, which will carry a piece of the country. You can read a bunch of articles on the Internet about what to bring home from Sri Lanka - tea, topaz, spices, so I will not talk on this. I would like to advise what to buy as a person who has lived on the island for a long time, something that is not often written about in articles, but which is an integral part of the local culture.
