I love my step bits. I needed to cut a 3/8" hole in a 5/16" square hole. We all know what happens with a regular twist bit. Catching, the part spinning, risk to our hands... the step bit easily rounded out the hole in seconds. I also needed to drill a bunch of holes for air movement in a sheet of plexiglass to use as a shelf in my boat's fridge. My Harbor Freight step bit did a great job. I did get a crack, but only because I was in a hurry.

Too many tips about proper cutting/drilling, but NEVER use TiN coated on brass, dry, nor with coolant/oil. There is a chemical reaction between the TiN coating and the CuZn alloy. Seems every engineer / technician says they know better. But they come back asking for the solution: TiCN coating.

I’ll tell you what matters to me in a step bit. I do electric work. I use the step bits to make or enlarge holes in sheet metal, such as that used on circuit breaker panels. So, I need a bit that makes 7/8” holes (for 1/2” conduit fittings). Therefore, I like step bits whose 7/8” step is “taller,” making it easy for me to know when to stop. Less often, I need the hole to be 1-1/8” (for 3/4” fittings). Forget using an ordinary drill chuck. I need a bit with a 1/4” hex shank, with a recess, so I can mount the bit in my impact driver. I usually have to use a regular bit to make the starting (usually 1/4” to 3/8”) hole, as the point of the step bit dulls quickly. My preferred bits are the DeWalt 5/16” because the bits have DeWalt’s unique “pilot point” tip. I mark my hole location using a spring-loaded (or “automatic” center punch. USE safety glasses. Step bits really throw chips.

Yep. With elec. panels, you get one shot at getting it right (or some extra work with a 'dremmel' if you're lucky). I always have a good stout spring-loaded centerpunch at hand. 3 to 4?! I've used the one or even a 2nd but never a 3rd. I bust out the drill bits from the toolbag at that point! You're probably spending more time, battery power and your energy fighting 4 screws standing in as drill bits than just using the steo bit or a decent 1/8-1/4" drill bit.

These tests missed the main use case for these bits....making accurate holes in thin, low carbon steel sheet such as and electrical enclosure. They were never intended to drill deep into AR500. While this can account for durability of the chisel, it does nothing for roundness, durability, or size accuracy for their intended use.

I work in HVAC. I have had the TEMO for a few months, I actually bought it on the recommendation of a random commenter on one of your other videos on drill bits. Let me tell you, that thing EATS! I use it to cut through sheet metal and electrical boxes quite a bit. Takes almost no effort and burns right through what ever I'm cutting to the full 7/8ths in less than 5 seconds. Works way better than my old Lenox and various other ones I've borrowed from coworkers. After dozens upon dozens of holes there is still hardly any visual wear on the black AITiN coating. Guys, get 'em while the gettin's good. Who knows when they start cost cutting and the quality starts going downhill, that fact just seems inevitable with any tool company.

Okay, so the moral to the story is, go buy a couple of sets of the cheapest step drills, use oil, patience, and number them. Use the #1 set of step drills until it's dull, then go to your #2 set and order a new #1 set. You will have a ways to go before you go past the cost of one set of Snap-on step drills and have better performance.

As an electrician, time is the only variable that has more value than money. Wasting time with a slow but durable Christmas tree bit does not pay off in the slightest. The cheap and fast ones seem to be the best in this case.
@AdventureAwaits1111Ай бұрын
@@masterkamen371 As a machinist, I have the opposite opinion. This is a good speed review, but thats it. Nothing as far as longevity. I can use damn near any drill bit real fast, one time....or....I can adjust feeds and speeds for the grind on the tool and the material being drilled and it lasts forever. There is no reason to burn up drill bits...it costs money AND time. *I also drilled AR plate for a customer. HIGH pressure is needed to evacuate the heat in the chip. This test just doesnt apply physics correctly. The constant pressure was a fail in my opinion.
@SnifferSockАй бұрын
@AdventureAwaits1111 I understand your use case but most people using a step bit in a cordless drill with more or less constant pressure. Way less precise than machining.
@ChevyConQuesoАй бұрын
@@AdventureAwaits1111 I 100% agree with your assessment. I'm no machinist, but I drill damn near everything with changing pressures and speeds to suit the material, I use oil, and pilot holes where necessary. I'm willing to try stuff off these lists for my throwaway tools that are abused by others, but generally this is just one data point for me. I was trying to follow the tip damage more. I like supporting American workers as well, so the Norseman is likely to be my first choice off this list, based on COO, how the cutting edges held up, cost, and material. A few more seconds isn't going to break the bank for me. I'll buy a couple and don't think I'll be disappointed

I think your stainless steel tests need to be redone. I have worked with SS sheet metal for many years and one of the main ideas when drilling it is to make sure that you have enough initial pressure on the cut so that you don't work harden the material. When you're drilling SS sheet, the use of coolant to keep the work hardening down makes a substantial difference in cutting times and overall tool longevity. Virgin 304 SS can go from a Rockwell B scale reading of 80 to over 100 when work hardened. That's harder than many cheap drill bits. Flood coolant would make the tests more uniform because work hardening rates vary with drillbit cutting angles. Different attack angles harden the work differentially, if you keep the material cool, it's harder to cause work hardening.

Got a couple Dewalt step bits on sale at 30 bucks, and have a Milwaukee bit as well. And a Bosch step bit. I do use cutting oil and will typically use a Cobalt bit to pilot. The Milwaukee cuts stainless the best and easiest and doesn't bind much. The Teemo and Dewalt are basically identical. The Bosch didn't last long at all. This is my experience with Stainless. Thr Teemo is certainly worth the money and then some. Thanks as always for your videos!!

I have a lot of experience drilling stainless steel. You gave to push hard, but drill slowly. If you spin tge bit too fast, you temper the stainless steel to the point where it gets rudiculously difficult to drill at all. Once it turns blue, you're in trouble. Surprisingly, if you drill slow and push hard, you can drill a surprising number of holes without the bit going dull. I had good luck with dewalt cobalt drill bits years back. Their step bits were great as well. Can't speak for them now, but from the looks of the testing, they still hold their own. Another great video.

Another great test! It's crazy how often I check the archives before I buy something, and often steer co-workers here if they ask for a recommendation. One suggestion on this test: Maybe I'm using step bits differently than most, but I rarely use them for pilot holes in anything but plastic. The pilot hole performance might be a proxy for hole enlargement but that's how I use mine 95% of the time. It would be cool to see a focus both on pilot hole performance but also hole enlargement in various materials and also in holes with irregular margins (like a torched-out hole in a trailer frame where they burn through to run wires, that sort of thing). But again, a great test and I'm not complaining!
