I have 3 of these lights, they are the best flashlights I've ever owned. The dual beams is genius, we just go back from a camping trip and I can't emphasize enough how nice it is to see everything around your feet as well as what's up ahead while you are walking on a dark trail. I too have noticed that all of my flashlights with "modes" (and therefore circuits) have a much higher parasitic drain that those with simple switches. I can't tell you how many times I've reached for one of those other lights and it's either totally dead or has a very short run time. I have none of those issues with this light.

Yeah, I was half kidding around but I can see a scenario where you want to shine your light at a coyote or something in the distance quickly and you hit the wrong button and then you are fumbling around trying to flip the light to find the other button. This reason alone is why I chose the Mini Maglite AA Pro. Very simple operation, not even a switch to go bad. After watching this video I decided to test how durable my little maglite was so I took it outside and threw it at the concrete garage floor for 10 minutes straight and then took it apart and poured brake fluid all inside it. I let the brake fluid set a few minutes and then I cleaned it all, put batteries in it, and guess what... when I turned the bezel, the light came on...just like it was supposed to. Nothing more needs to be said about maglite durability. And unlike streamlight, it’s 100% Made in USA!

AppliedWeaponsTechLLC I have to agree with you there on the maglight pick. The newer drop in LED conversion kits really do throw out some shine, and at a reasonable price. Check out Matt Smiths videos on them. His 5000 lumen Maglight is insane but a bit pricey

I do find both a spot light and flood light in one flashlight very useful. For up close work the spot has too much glare and the flood is light better. Besides with both lit you can see out ahead and the ground is nicely lit. The spot light button is on the top and the flood light on the bottom. As noted these are single function buttons, just on and off. After trying it out, I bought a second one.

AA and AAA's are a must for a flashlight. If the power goes out for longer than a few hours, I don't want to have to deal with a rechargeable flashlight that needs to be recharged. I am always gong to have AA's, AAA's, and 9V's at my house and every backpack, suitcase, etc. that I have, I always keep a few AA's and AAA's. I will never have to worry about my flashlight not working because it ran out of charge, especially when the situation does not allow for me to charge them. I 100% agree about the unnecessary modes. I am only ever going to use one, maybe two modes, and I don't want to have to cycle through fifteen to get to the one that I want, only to accidentally go passed it and have to start again.

The important part of that flashlight is that its intrinsically safe. That's why emergency services use it. Its made for places where explosive gases and dust are normal conditions. my best "Survival Light" is this rayovac 6v lantern battery light. I've had and been using it for over 15 years. reverse clicky switch, base that can adjust from 0 to about 45+ degrees, the reflector assembly is removable for a "lantern mode." it came as incandescent, but i put a terralux .5 watt LED module in it (lantern batteries have backwards polarity to conventional lights and that module is +/- tip convertible (also out of production)). the thing about that is you can pick up rechargeable SLA batteries around hunting season, and there's a few readily available 6v chargers starting at $10 at walmart, and Tractor Supply even stocks (stocks, carries in their store) a 6v Solar charger. how bitchin is that. it'll run for days nonstop then recharge with a $20 solar charger. the lesson here is know your local stores and DIY.

I'm never a fan of anything that uses 3 batteries. Most battery packs come in 4, 8, or 10 units, so when you have a device that uses 3 batteries you're either having incomplete sets of extra batteries but at the same time not enough. Examples when your light uses 3 batteries: You get a 4-pack: You use 1 cycle and you're left with 1 good battery. You get an 8-pack: You use 2 cycles (3+3), and you're left with 2 good batteries. You get a 10-pack: You use 3 cycles (3+3+3), and you're again left with 1 good battery. Solution: Get a light that uses 2 batteries. You'll be able to 100% utilize any battery pack you get with no waste, and you won't be forced to just pick the 6-pack or 12-pack battery boxes. This is also true for devices/lights that use 1 battery. Thankfully Streamlight makes the Dualie in a 2AA configuration too, so I would go for that instead of the 3AA. Yes you get less power, but that's the trade-off you'd have to make.
@paulharold72625 жыл бұрын
Cody, just a consideration for your fuel and power preps. On my 23 acre homestead in Idaho I have gone to propane for heat, cooking, generator. It is even possible to convert your cars , trucks & etc. Propane stores for years without the degradation of gas and diesel. Here in North Idaho it is only $1.25 a gallon. My 2500 square foot house only consumes 600 gallons a year. Thats less than two months electric bills. You could put a couple of 500 or 1000 gallon tanks underground and be set for years. My house is run by a westinghouse 12,000 wat duel fuel generator. Getting a generator tht is already plumbed and tuned for propane removes the uncertanty of third-party conversion kits, I also have an Arctic Cat Prowler EV, (Electric). Polaris is putting out their own Electric ATV this year. No Gas to store, just charge from your propane generator. For my power system I use a bank of batteries so that I only need to run the generator about 4 hourss a day. This could be suplemented with solar panels. Just a few Ideas for long term preps.

Cody, for radios I would suggest the following: Get a GMRS license from the FCC for $70. it covers you and your entire family. This gives you the power to legally use 5 watt portables and 50 watt mobile radios. I would look round at Midland for cheaper or what you'd expect to use on a fire with offerings from Motorola, Kenwood, EF Johnson, etc. Some of their product lines take AAA or AA battery packs, which makes things a breeze when your batteries are getting now and dont have a charger handy. 5 watts is the output rating to look for on a handheld radio. Then get a mobile for the van or home, which can run 50 watts.

Great video as we should all think about this. I give out cheap Homedepot lanterns as gifts all the time. And I know they are cheap, but one thing that is most important with lights is HOW LONG DOES IT LAST on a set of batteries? During a severe incident that lasts days or longer, if your light last 2.5 hrs or needs recharging, your in trouble! Those cheap Home Depot lights last 100 hrs on 2 D batteries. Sadly one good drop will break the plastic inside. So good to have many stocked up and in many places too. That Sreamlight is a cool light. streamlight has been around for many of years. Radios are a rabbit hole, can’t go wrong with higher end Motorola, kenwood or icom. People will recommend HAM gear but if your not into it stay away, lots of programming and frankly not all that rugged. There are legalities of what gear can operate on what frequencies. UHF is better at penetrating buildings and obstacles, VHF will go farther over open ground. I would get something in digital UHF, the Motorola EVX-S24 is a decent business class radio that I have had good experiences with. You will need a radio dealer to program it for you.

They aren't bright, don't shoot a beam far, nor are they %100 water proof, but I've taken them out in rain plenty and they do fine. They still put out more light and are more reliable than what we had as kids.

Nice Light, but with battery backed, grid tied, solar, we don't often notice when the grid goes down. We do use flashlights a lot, so a couple of those are probably in our future, for tending the chickens and bringing in a late load of firewood, and that sort of thing.

I have 3 of these lights! I have the big spot, the 90, and the one you have. I completely agree I like that they don't have all the finicky modes, that's why I'm buying more. Thanks for the link Mr. W!

Can't beat the rechargeable streamlight stinger. I've been using mine for 21 years now. Get a couple with a car charger for each vehicle, piggyback for home and you're all set. The Milwaukee M18 searchlight is great for beaming across the property. I use mine spotting coyotes on the farm.

I’ve got two of them flashlights too. Like you said, they fit perfect in a pocket in carhartt pants. Use it all the time when it’s dark and I’m going out in the field. Had the oldest one for over a year with no problems

Former cop, I trusted my streamlight stinger HPL DS for 5 or 6 years until I left the force. By far the best flashlight I've ever used. My backup was a 2c LED Maglight. Also really good light and really affordable. My Streamlight has so many battle scars on it- I'm so proud of that flashlight. It still gives me the fizz to this day. Streamlight was also always very easy to deal with when something went wrong with one of their lights.

My EDC is a Streamlight Protac 1L-1AA dual fuel that can use the CR 123 battery or a single AA Lithium Ion battery, which is what I keep in it. It is small enough for a vest pocket, and is very bright. I also particularly like the double sided clip, so it can be clipped to my hat when I need a head lamp.

Just like you I also work in fire and EMS and we have been using the Motorola ht 1250's for years proven radios cheap and easy to program they have 16 channels as well as a screen so you can view the name of a channel that you are on i.e you can have a name for just our family another for your neighbors etc... great radios proven on the fire ground and have never failed me

Streamlight makes fantastic products, I’ve been using them for years. I have a few of the Strion LED lights, I always have it with me at work and most of the time when I’m not at work lol. They’ve stood the test of time, very durable and dependable.

i like the streetlights lights the only problem with this one is in the dark when you go to find the different buttons they both fill the same and after the 50th time of blinding my self i wish they would change the button design a little but other then that they work great in all kinds of environments thanks for your content

I bought a 2 C-Cell MagLite that is roughly the same size as that Streamlight. I put in an LED bulb that bumps the brightness up to 200 something lumens and is plenty for what I need and costed me around 30 bucks as well. I also have a 2-D Cell LED converted MagLites in all of my vehicles. I have one of those same LED Streamlight Survivor lights on my turnout coat for work and really like it as well!

Water Storage - Perhaps it was already mentioned but would you be able to do a video on water storage? Any suggestions for a guy on a city lot on California? I have enough gallon jugs of distilled water to last a few days. Are there any better methods for water storage?

Been in public safety for over 25 years. Streamlight is by far the best and most economic for just about anything. I have over a dozen models and none have failed me yet. Some even have dual power capability (AA and cr123).
