I'd say WAR and PLD are both good tanks for beginners. WAR is probably the easiest tank to play, rotationally, and is kind of the easiest to pick up and master. It also has the best hotbar economy of all the tanks, having the fewest separate abilities at level 90 because of how a lot of its low level abilities upgrade instead of it getting a ton of excess abilities to add to your hotbar. WAR has the smallest gap between low end and high end damage on FFLogs, meaning it's the easiest to do well in and doesn't have a ton of quirks to master for optimization. So for those seeking a high level challenge, WAR may not deliver, but for those seeking a tank that's approachable and that you can do difficult fights without having to spend hours on target dummies before hand, WAR might just be for you. WAR also gets most of its core kit relatively early; at level 50 you have your 1-2-3 rotation, your 1-2-4 upkeep buff, your 1-2 AOE combo, and you have your Beast Gauge spenders (in their lower level forms), your damage buff (in its lower level form), and your two charges of +50 gauge ability. Basically, you can start working on that muscle memory super early with WAR, which also contributes to being able to play it at level cap more easily. PLD is another good tank, though it has a lot more abilities than WAR and has a bit more quirky stuff to master for optimization. You also get your core rotation a lot slower. While WAR has everything in its core kit at level 50, PLD...does not. You have your base 1-2-3 rotation and your two oGCD damage attacks. It does have your 1-2 AOE rotation. But you don't even get Goring Blade (your 1-2-4 damage over time [DoT] attack). For anyone remembering cross-class abilities...well, you don't have those anymore, so PLD gets its vaunted off-healing power at level 58. Before then, it can't self-heal (or party heal). It gets Holy Spirit at 64, but Requiescat at 68. So level 68 is when you first really unlock your "full" rotation (without the finishers on the magic side of the rotation). Atonement comes at 76. That's when you have BASICALLY your whole rotation...but then at 90, you get the true finishers, which replace a Goring Blade combo. So you'll need to retrain your muscle memory to use Goring out of Confiteor for < level 90 content, but Royal Authority instead at level 90. Now, one way to look at this is the Job is REALLY gradual in introducing you to all your abilities, giving you plenty of time to learn to use them correctly. But the other is that, unlike WAR, you have a bit of a more bumpy ride to getting that muscle memory thing going, with a final speedbump at the end. This isn't really too much to overcome, but it's not QUITE as smooth. ...but, on the flipside, PLD is probably the most versatile tank in the game right now. It has the most overall party utility of all the tanks, and has several niche abilities to help out your party. It's the only tank that can outright Cover an ally to take damage for them and keep them alive in an emergency (e.g. an 8 man with no DPS that can raise, only you as a PLD can ensure your other healer doesn't die while Raising other party members...at least for 8 seconds). This gives PLD much more room (along with its rotation) for optimization and to really make a difference in your party for some clutch saves. Other tanks have abilities to do this in various ways now too that they once did not, but PLD is still arguably king here. This does give PLD a bit of a problem with button bloat (it has the most hotbar spots taken of all the tanks), but also gives you a lot of room to shine. So PLD is a tank that, overall, is easy to pick up but has a lot to work with to master, letting you learn on it and also have lots of room to grow as you become more skilled. DRK is a FUNCTIONAL tank right now...but the other three are simply better vs the current encounter design and dungeon design. That said, the Devs did acknowledge this in the last LiveLetter, so hopefully they'll be addressing it. One thing to note about DRK is that it seems to have the highest damage output of the tanks (and the highest potency burst window), and is brought to World First clear groups because of this, despite its other weaknesses. DRK is probably the hardest tank, so if you're looking for a challenge to really let your skills shine...and/or just like the Job thematically...DRK might be for you. (Note that I'm saying the least about DRK as it's the tank I've played the least on, so...this is the best I can really go into it.) GNB is actually a pretty good tank. I'd say GNB is the "jack of all trades"/"all rounder" of the tanks. It starts at level 60, so you'll need to either have experience with another tank (or DPS), or just be good at reading and setting up your tooltips, but once you've got that, the nice thing is that by level 60, you already basically have your whole rotation to work with. Level 70 adds in the oGCD continuation abilities, and 72 adds your AOE Powder Gauge spender. It's rotation is fast paced, which can stress some people out when they're in the middle of their continuation combo but also need to weave in defensive CDs. Its rotation is also more rigid and you need to keep it pretty tight to avoid drifting out of burst windows. That said, the rigidity also means that once you get that muscle memory working for you, you can almost autopilot the rotation. A lot of people say it feels like a DPS, but honestly, I find it easier to do without thinking than PLD (though it took me a bit to get there) because it's really a 30 sec rotation where you just wave a few more abilities every other time (No Mercy, Double Down, and your DoT and both oGCDs every 60 sec, Gnashing and Blasting Zone in the 30 sec midpoint). It's less versatile than PLD and harder than WAR, but has good self-sustain, some decent party utility, and is a kind of "no frills, just business" tank that gets the job done. It also has the second highest damage (after DRK), making it still valuable in clears. . So all tanks are viable, we have to make that clear. ANY tank you pick can clear the content. So if one is just calling to you, by all means, play that one! :) But overall for those totally new to tanking wondering: WAR is the easiest, PLD is a bit harder and has a lot of potential room for growth, GNB is a similar to PLD in difficulty maybe a SMIDGE harder trading that extra utility for a bit more damage and a more streamlined kit, and DRK is the tank for players wanting a challenge and the highest overall damage of the tanks.

Dayum, great summary (saying that as a sprout). Overall I like the sound of GNB the best even though I didn't level any tank job so far... My highest job is lvl 51 RDM so far, but in the future once I buy the expansion needed for it, GNB is gonna be my first choice... (I'll make sure to spend a lot of time on a training dummy to really get the rotation into my memory)

Overall, they're all good choices, so pick whichever calls to you. :D

I always loved enha shaman in WoW but I remember it not being really that good most of the expansions. Here I can just pick what sounds best and everything is good once you master it :-)

I started with GNB as my first tank when I was mainly a DPS type of person. I think the way to go with GNB is to go back to old dungeons and go up by 5 once you're comfortable with how you're going with it since you're kind of slowly unlocking all those skills that way. And yeah while it is overwhelming at the start, I think it's just a matter of taking the time of reading what each skill you have does and where you would like to start it. Did ended up doing PLD on a server where I'm with friends and I do honestly had a lot of fun learning that one as well. Took some time on getting used to how it's gauge worked but I got through it. I also like how you ended up having a magic rotation eventually and I think that does kind of put it a bit above GNB for me because doing melee combos that lead to strong magic attacks on enemies was pretty satisfying to do.

My first Tank was GNB because gunblade. It was overwhelming but because it felt like a DPS i was enjoying it. Then DRK and WAR were a surprise for me because I hate “big weapon go brrrr” kinda logic. But they feel good !! I thought i would like PAL because he has spells but i dont like it as much as the others. 🤷‍♂️

As a GNB main I can say it's rough to start out, especially if it is your first tank.....but if you take the time to master it, it just feels so amazing IMHO. WAR is my second favorite, especially with the aoe now not conal mainly because it just feels so nice. PDN and DRK just don't feel good to me at all. If you are new to tanking I strongly recommend WAR first to get the hang of tanking especially if you are a dps main transitioning to a Tank main like I was.

I completely agree. GNB was the last tank that I leveled and it quickly became my favorite class at level 70. I love all the tanks, but WAR and PLD can feel a bit boring. GNB is a busy class without a lot of button bloat. It's also worth mentioning that Aurora is one of the most useful utility skills on all tanks. It generates so much aggro that the healer is allowed to be a lot more liberal with regens.

I personally really enjoy the DRK and GNB. While I do intend to put a few hundred hours on the WAR and PLD, I just can never seem to get enough of the DRK. I recently swapped to GNB to try something different and its been going good, the wider range of mitigations and such are nice and I definitely have been enjoying the more "all-rounder" aspect of it. Especially after 200 hours of DRK, being able to take a few extra hits while doing dps does feel nice. TBN on DRK though is super nice if you know when to use it to absorb a tank buster for either yourself or an ally.

I'm a Paladin main. Getting the regen/sustain in Endwalker was the cherry on top that rounded out the job well, though not as crazy as Warrior. On the topic of warrior, I agree about the cone AoE but I stopped for an even more trivial reason, I hate the persistent glow when your rage is up. Its annoying to look at over time (especially out of battle) and covers up your glam. I don't love lots of double triple weaving on DRK and the Gunbreaker was a bit too DPS-like (I like tanking because I can focus more on mechanics than rotations/life bars).

Nah, the invul is pretty awesome now but they still have two skills of magic mitigation that are pretty bleh. Level 90 dark knight is awesome. Leveling dark knight can be rough cakes in dungeons.

I tried PAL to 45 and I thought meh. I tried WAR and it felt easier to survive, quicker to level through content and just overall less squishy. So my WAR is lvl 90 now. My main is a WHM and WARs are my preferred tanks to "heal" as well. I really tried to get into PAL for the sword and board play and glam, but I couldn't get passed my experience as a healer and went with the tank I felt performs better.

I dropped PLD, because I didn't like it, but I like WAR and stuck with it. DRK felt incomplete to me, so did GNB, but I actually like GNB because I enjoy the fast pace combat, so I can overlook that part, so it's my 2nd tank.

Hey, just wanted to say, might want to do the actual PLD rotation on a guide like this (FoF buffed goring- royal authority-attonement-goring-magic combo-unbuffed authority+attonement repeat) also where did you get that PLD needed to catch up on damage numbers on previous expansions? it was lacking in HW but Shadowbringers PLD was the second highest damage tank while in Endwalker so far its tied to last with Warrior

Great video! I think I'm the only person who prefers Warriors cone-AOE starter... If you're in a dungeon and you're running up to a group of mobs, you can press your first AOE quicker on warrior in order to hit all mobs, and because you press it so early you can use the second AOE button inside the group of mobs while still almost completely moving forward without stopping. other classes have to be inside of the group of mobs to hit all, which means when DPS like me on SMN blast out their damage because they can, you'll sometimes have mobs running towards them first because of the additional time required to move inside of the group instead of standing before them. But yeah, the cone sucks when trying to damage all mobs in a group aside from pulling them, but I guess i'm used to it bc I have to hit my line AOE on Red Mage anyways do that positioning isnt that bad

Funny enough Dark Knight was my starting Tank, I played it just before Dark Arts was deleted, I’ve mained it since Stormblood and haven’t put it away since Gunbreaker is my second tank but it’s mostly when I wanna feel like a DPS that can take a hit I haven’t touched Warrior for some reason, and I haven’t touched Paladin cause of personal bias. So even though my only two tank jobs are lacking this expansion, they’re the only ones I even consider playing lmao I’m too damn stubborn I guess.

Pld and war feels powerful but if we talk about real numbers they are the bottom two out of the 4 tanks when in comes to damage. It’s not a big deal though, all tanks are balance, and i like the fact that all of them are different. Like you said pld got tons of mitigations while war has the most survivability, while drk may not be like war but it has a big damage and busier rotation same with gnb. Those two tanks are for more advanced level tanks.

I started as a Warrior but I am now maining a Dark Knight. I played FFXI back in the day and mained DRK but that was a much different game and it was hard to get groups and level up. FFXIV lets me actually live out my DRK fantasy I had from back then without having the same difficult time doing so.

Even tho everyone says DRK is the worst it is the one i feel i do my best tanking at. Especially since its changes to 6.1 made it go from the worst invulnerability to potentially the best. The only issues i have with drk is when my macro only sends out the walking dead activated notification but fails to actually activate the ability or when a healer just ignores that my walking dead is active and heals me through it. @@innerdescent8210 well there have been a few changes but the two big ones yoyll wamt to know is drk GCDs self heal during living dead similar to how war raw intuition does. Takes about 4 GCDs to fully self heal without a healers help. Much better. And blood weapon has been given 5 charges instead of trying to hit 5 in 10 seconds

I am dragoon main and my s cond job is gunbreaker and the rotation is super similar and it was very easy to set up basicly the hard part t for me is the tank stuff just because dragoons rotation is hard mode gnb rotation

Paladin is definitely the best tank to learn on. Warrior's Cone AOE has always been a bit of a problem. I love my heals and my party support abilities, honestly, I've been a Paladin Main this expansion and I adore it. Paladin is great for recovery even before gaining all the regen abilities it gets post 80. I have soloed boss fights as them when the rest of the party has fallen and kept allies alive long enough to deal damage. It's very satisfying... That said, it is not in the best place for the raid scene. Its damage is low compared to other tanks, a place where Dark Knight Shines. You can call Dark Knight the "Selfish" job of the Tanks and you'd be right. I also find playing Dark Knight a lesson in trust, as it lacks the recuperative abilities of its peers. This is another reason why it flies high in Raid scenes - especially when you have a good Static. I am to a point with my team where I don't feel compelled to heal during the raids we've mastered. As long as everyone does their part, we're good. It also specifically has magic damage reduction which is, again, very helpful in raids. I also find its AOEs at higher levels VERY satisfying. It is (oddly enough) my second favorite tank and I love it for more than its story :)

The only real downside to gnb is when you have to move a boss and you're in your burst phase. Things can be tricky then but besides that its a fun job to play. Never really liked pld. Warrior is just boring to me and when drk became a War clone they killed it for me.

Started lvling PLD but switched to WAR and regret nothing. The cone AoE issue for tagging can be dealt with by just skipping to using the circle AoE, then worrying about positioning for rotations when the pack is gathered. The fact that I almost soloed the lvl 87 dungeon boss after the rest of my party died (til an ill-timed tankbuster managed to do me in) was the last bit of confirmation I needed to continue my unga-bunga rampage. That, and I have a bad habit of forgetting about the magic portion of the PLD rotation.

I genuinely do love PLD, it was my first tank to level and get to the level cap in HW (I started in ARR but only had WHM and SCH/SMN to 50 before the HW expansion came out), and I love all the utility and the sword and board style. But as much as people go on about GNB's rotation being harder, the rigidity of it makes it easier for me to keep up my place in it. PLD I'm always a little uncertain if I need to shift into my magic rotation or wait, when I need to make the shift where the boss won't be untargetable before I can finish, etc. I'm probably overthinking it, but it's just a bit much for me, especially adding all the party utility it brings - which, again, I love, but it's that much more to juggle. PLD is that job that's easy to pick up, but has a high ceiling to master. Plenty of room for growth if you want something that you can show off your skills with. But I find WAR and GNB a bit more manageable in longer fights or challenging content. But this is probably also a bit of a "different strokes for different folks" thing. Some people get bored when they don't have things to juggle, and I like that PLD and DRK exist for those people. \o/

A drk is always there consedering the tide damage checks bcause drk has by far the highest damage out of all the tanks. Of corse warrior is imortal in normal content like dungons. But in activitys where basically one missed mechanic is 100% death, the selfhealing isnt that handy. The healers have to heal the party anyways. So bestg cobination is a drk and a gnb fo those activitys

On a gameplay perspective it is basically like this: Do you want to be an easy to play and more party oriented supportive tank? Try Paladin Do you want to be an easy to play and more self sustaining tank that dont have to worry about getting bad healers on most content? Try Warrior Do you want to be a well rounded tank with some skills that feels like you are playing a dps? Try Gunbreaker Do you want to be a damage oriented tank with a lot of buttons to press at the cost of less survivability overall comparing to the other tanks? Try Dark Knight

I personally hate pld, I mained drk all throughout msq and beyond now and leveled gnb and started a bit of war up to level 40 and they all felt amazing immediately but I simply do not like pld, Leveling it up to 70 and its the job I was the most bored out of, even healers were way more fun to play I don’t like the skills effects either they’re all incredibly underwhelming for me except the blades at level 90, for example I preferred rage of halone as the 3rd combo and not the upgrade who for me looks boring af I seems to be on the minority with this opinion but for me pld is not fun at all maybe I’ll change my mind when I’ll get it to 90 but it’s the only job that I was bored out of my mind playing the whole time out of the 12 I managed to get to 90 so far

I'm having a lot's of fun with GNB rn, but still, for beginner tankers I'd recommend PLD and WAR, bc the game does a good job teaching you new skills, and easing you into the class in general. Since GNB starts at lvl60, you get a bunch of skills at once, and without previous experience, you most likely wouldn't have any idea how to organize/bind them. DRK probably has the same problem, just on a smaller scale. PLD was my first tank tho, and I had a lots of fun with it. My main reason for switching to GNB is glam options ^^'

I used to be GNB and loved the gameplay but I then switched to PLD because they just have more weapons to play with and a more straight and simple battle stance. Gameplay wise they are better too, you can do a lot more and have more tools. GNB is basically spamming 1-2-3 + combo spenders, same for AoE rotation. And of course using all you can during the No Mercy window. The visual effects are super nice but in terms of gameplay, paladin is really more polished and has way more tools to play with.

In ShB, my favorite was GNB. But in EW so far my favorite is PLD (after the buffs). Who knows what the future holds! But, I will say that tanking is not my favorite #HealerLife. I agree with you on PLD tho! It might actually replace GNB as my preferred tank to play because I feel it plays so nicely. Plus, the PLD glam with a shield is just too chef's kiss to miss.

From someone who has leveled all the tanks, I gotta say dark has issues right now just from how it feels this maybe different in harder content (ive only done as pld/war). But dark feels very frail espically on the 81-90 content such as dugeons and trials, the main reason is that tbn isn't very powerful compared to all the other tanks defensive abilites and punishes the player for timing incorrectly with less damage, tbn is the weakest effect out of all three normally. (it can be better sometimes for tank busters on low) but in general its just often worse, that with no self healing sucks, oblation is a ok ability? Living dead is awful imo, drks rotation is pretty meh, it has a lot of ogcds to press? Has similar longer cool downs, dark mind is situationally good or bad. The job just felt rushed really it's not that drks really bad but the lack of changes really shows espically when it was considered by a lot of people to be pretty boring. Dark is actually powerful in savage because higher dps then the other tanks is always going to be better then actual tanking abilites or utility

@@BunBossFFXIV I think people see dark knight do the most damage and automatically think it's a good and "balanced" as tank, I'm definitely not a hardcore savage player, but I know DRK/GNB are both most wanted right now (Due to both having higher damage) despite paladins support + good self healing or warriors Insane self healing. Tanks should be balanced around how they tank and support the Party Imo. Give dark knight blood draining mechanics and keep the TBN aspect of it. My general problems with paladin (I'm a PLD main) is cover is so situational & Devine veil doesn't work on the pld (should have more of a clear animation to go with it when it's popped off). Other then that I love how pld feels, pretty solid at tanking, pretty solid at off-tanking and great for support and emergencies. Warrior? No real problems simple rotation but i think that's fine, I guess the non-cricle AOE is bad? Warrior plays great, very independent of healers (even more then PLD), self sustain is amazing. War/Pld are generally just made really well this expansion and it feels like Dark knight was heavily neglected not that I hate Dark knight I can find it fun at times it's more a frustration to how fun the class could be.

I guess as a personal addendum, I think certain tanks are better suited for different kinds of content. Warrior and Gunbreaker are amazing for dungeons as you breeze through trash with sustain and damage, while Paladin and Dark Knight are great for trials and raids because they can mitigate heavier single hits like tankbusters and boss autos frequently and at little cost to your resources. If you're going to pick a tank to stick with, consider what you'll be doing at endgame opposed to the leveling phase, because leveling is a temporary part of the experience and will improve as you progress. Damage is also negligible in this game, even with PLD's lower numbers you will be able to clear anything, no problem. In fact, PLD is a great tank to learn savage raids from because of its stiff rotation if you're into that challenge. One last thing: You can play any job with any content, but depending on job design you may have to be more involved with the content you're running than pressing a few buttons.

im sry bro. but gnb has the best mitigation for single hits out of all the tanks, being heart of corundum. almost 30% mitigation + a shield and a mini excog. tbn and holy shelltron are nothing in comparison in my opinion. i agree with you that WAR and GNB are the best in dungeons but they are also the best in raids. PLD having clemency and the wings is nice and all but allmost never used in a raid setting. i played all the tanks in the pandaemonium savage raids and i felt that PLD was the squishiest tank. getting a regen when using holy shelltron is nice but it doesnt matter for very hard tankbuster that leave you with a sliver of HP even though you used it in combination with a rampart or sentinel, the next auto attack can kill you, if you dont get the regen tick and the healers are a little late. as GNB, i never were in danger of dying after a tankbuster becaue heart of corundum is busted. PLD is a good Off-Tank with intervention and the wings but the other tanks can support the main tank and group in the same way. and as a Main Tank, PLD is just straight up the worst. And last: yes you can play every job in every content but it does not depend on your job how much involved you have to be with the content. if you want to get better and do savages, ultimates etc. you want to get more involved with it regardless of the job you are playing. If you just want to do dungeons and 24 man's, treasure maps and so on, just press 1 2 3 as tank and dodge incoming aoe's and you win.

Paladin is by far the best tank. Not only can they maintain the party HP with clemency if the whitemage is down, but they have enough damage mitigation skills to outlast any of the other tanks. Paladin will always be the best tank :)

I don't think anyone should be scared to say it. Dark Knight is a terrible tank class, and if you're looking to tank content, do not use it. KZbinrs can run around saying "Play whatever you want", but the reality is that the healer you get in your group, wants you to play a viable class. Do it for them. Use a tank class with abilities that actually stop you from dying. Dark Knight has been utter trash compared to the other three for years at this point. I don't see that changing any time soon.

Paladin was my first Tank job (still just a sprout tho btw) and I love it, its really versatile and beefy , but the damage or lack thereof, is really stifling Jumping into DRK was like a whole new world with how much more damage they did in comparison (and in comparison to every other tank job in the game rn, yes even gunbreaker), as well as them having a self heal as soon as you start. Just wish Walking Dead wasn't so garbage tho PS: Honestly, if they just made Living Dead better (meaning , more in line with those of the other classes) the job would be infinately better Here's my idea on how to fix Living Dead: First make it a sustained toggleable ability, that locks away 70% of you max MP and reduces your damage by 30% as long as its active But as its main effect: It gives you 5% resistance to ALL damage for every 10% max HP you are missing, as well as a bonus to all healing effects by the same amount (including your own). And if your health is about to reach 0, the ability will automatically become Walking Dead , negate the damage you were about to take ,put your HP at 1 and place a shield on you for 15 seconds who's HP is equal to 50% of the damage it just negated When the shield is broken or expires , the Ability automatically reverts to Living Dead. The Walking Dead effect has a 360 second cooldown This basically gives Dark Knights the ability to toggle between a heavy offensive or defensive style, while still running with the idea that they get tougher to kill the closer they are to death Feel free to comment and suggest changes to the idea, as I'm not a high end player and I'm not sure how weak or OP this would be

Whenever new players ask me which tank they should begin with I'll always recommend GNB. GNB starts at lvl 60, which means less time spent on leveling which can be very boring and frustrating for beginners. GNB's rotation is simple and straightforward, It's just way easier than other tanks. Defense abilities have nothing complex like "increasing maximum HP" in warrior which no beginner will understand how many more hits they can take with the skill active. GNB's skills are way more easier to understand, it simply gives you more defense, makes you more tanky. GNB got a little bit of everything from other jobs (whether it's bad or good), switching from GNB to other tanks will be much smoother then, for example, switching from Paladin to Warrior. But at the same time, the next tank will also have more than enough interesting rotations and abilities to learn.

Here's a simple trick for warrior in how to avoid the cone aoe while running wall to wall: don't use it. Straight up start with the combo, the aim is mostly to tag every thing, start proper dps when you stop!

WAR right now is uncontested tanking God, 3derps and WAR can do EXDR, no other tank can. WAR deeps, mitigation, self heals, and that axe....Warriors above all, followed by PLD. Your list putting pld 1st is an opinion, which is wrong, also, if you're new to tanking do DRK, once mastering that, switch to a real tank and you'll be a god.

If EXDR stands for Expert Duty Roulette then GNB and PLD can absolutely tank those without a healer. “Expert” dungeons aren’t hard. They’re piss easy. They’re even easier than the leveling dungeons. Players who actually know how to play a game don’t judge a tank based on piss easy dungeons. They judge a tank based on the top end of content such as Savages and Ultimates. No one cares how tanks do in dungeons cause it’s so easy that it doesn’t really matter if WAR is easier to heal compared to a DRK. EXDR is honestly a pretty idiotic basis to judge tanks on. Also it’s clear you don’t know what you’re talking about since at the moment, WAR does the least amount of dps out of all the tanks while DRK does the most.
