Starmie is the best option but is very late game, only showing up for two gyms.

Not Gyarados, in gen III doesn't even come close to what he can pull off from gen IV onwards with the P/S split. If you're going to wait after you defeat norman, get Carvanha and then Sharpedo: really great sweeper, and for an in-game team is just what you need. Plus it gets STAB Crunch boosted by its high special attack. It doesn't have a great level-up learnset (apart fron crunch) but all the moves you had for Gyarados are TMs/HMs so doesn't really change that much; I'd go for Surf-Ice Beam-Crunch-X (Could be return, hyper beam or even earthquake, it has the attack stat to pull it off). It'a a sort of glass cannon, but 95 base speed is enough to outspeed a lot of pokemon. Appreciated the Cradily choice: it's a quite underrated pokémon, people often go for Armaldo, but Cradily can be really bulky and can help out a lot.

@pauloltman49608 ай бұрын
you say that like its the more available option, you don't get carvanha until you obtain the good rod which you'd need surf to get, and yeah you could get a lotad or a lombre but what's the point of raising up a Pokémon you won't use again until it can learn a move to get you a better Pokémon that's also probably lower leveled than your current Pokémon and gonna take up more grinding in the process? I feel like in terms of availability, low evolution level *and* move sets, Gyarados is perfectly fine!

Definitely not a bad take. Unfort that Gyarados got the short end of the stick in Gens 2 & 3 with the Special Split not favoring it and having few physical moves to utilize. Sharpedo & Tentacruel are good alternative water types that don't come too late, and can utilize Water STAB better in these games. Walrein & Milotic are also good, but take a while to get.

The STAB ice moves on Walrein is legit for Drake, but it is indeed quite late in the game. I've just used a Zigzagoon to surf me around until I got access to Spheal before, but I can't pretend that's quite a bit of an ask to go through the game that long without a water type.

"Gyarados is the 2nd best water type in Hoenn" I'd have to disagree there, there's 2 waters that keep it from the #2 spot Those being Tentacruel and Ludicolo Ludicolo is #2, due to good typing, and that's pretty much it, but it's not in Ruby If you want a good water type in all 3 that's not Swampert, use Tentacruel, it's got a good typing with it's 2 stabs working well, it's got good bulk specially and is not quad weak to anything, it actually gets level up water moves, and it's got a good movepool, giving it access to Sludge Bomb, Giga Drain, and Ice Beam

I'd say Starmie, Tentacruel, Ludicolo and Sharpedo are all better options over Gyarados, not a fan of Gyarados pre gen 4 because of its lack of water/ice options. (Minus Gen 1 where it had respectable 100 SP Attack.) It's just going to be useful for Earthquake, Return, Physical variants of Hidden Power etc. I mean Starmie is the overall best water type in Hoenn, fast, good coverage etc. But Tentacruel and Ludicolo come much earlier. Even Sharpedo isn't bad considering you can get it as a Carvanha west of Mauville.

-Blaziken: Replace Aerial Ace with Rock Slide (Egg Move), then later with Thunder Punch (Move Tutor). -Gyarados Sucks before Gen 4. Walrein, Starmie, Ludicolo, Sharpedo(yes, Sharpedo: the guy has base 95 SpA) and Tentacruel are much better choices. Heck one could even make an argument for Whishcash being better than Gyarados, due to him basically being discount Swampert). -Flygon: no probelm here. Just replace Rock Tomb with Fly. You lose the ability to manipulate Speed, but you free up an extra slot in your team (sorry Crobat). -Gardevoir: no objections here. Grumpig is also a valid, though inferior alternative to Gardevoir, that is in a better EXP group and has better resistances. Shadowball on Gardevoir is awful, though. Just use Thief instead. Then, post game, replace it with Ice Punch. -Cradily: y tho? The guy is not bad, but the lack of Leech Seed really holds him down. Imho it's much better to go with an offensive Grass type Pokémon: Ludicolo, if you want to run a Rain team, or Shiftry/Vileplume if you want to run a Sun team and capitalize on the fact that you chose Torchic as your starter. You can also run a mixed team, with Ludicolo instead of Gyarados as your Rain Dance user, and Shiftry/Vileplume as your Sunny Day user. -Crobat: since giving Fly to Flygon frees up a slot, I would choose one between Aggron (amazing physical bulk and decent typing), Banette (amazing physical attack and good support moves), Dusclops (amazing defences and utility), Slaking (Hyper Beam Slaking FTW) or Exploud (great coverage and decent stats).
@spadeschaoser90464 жыл бұрын
Gyarados gets messed up with its main stab being special and him having awful special attack. In gen 1 he has good special attack but god he's trash in gen 2-3, only reason to use him is because he looks cool. I personally think Gardevoir was an eh choice but I can understand keeping them. I'd keep crobat but he messed up the moveset really. He should've kept the original moveset. Also why Shiftry? Only good thing about using him is extrasensory.
@SorenToKeiran-Murasaki4 жыл бұрын
@@spadeschaoser9046 Totally agree on Gyarados. The guy was good in Gen 1, thanks to ts high Special and Hyper Beam being broken. Then it became terrible in Gen 2, got slightly better in Gen 3 thanks to Intimidate, but was still nowhere near how strong it will be from Gen 4 onwards. Agree on Crobat as well. Gardevoir has actually a very viable movepool, two good skills and very solid stats. Not to mention the fact that it's the best Psychic type Pokémon you have available until the post game (Alakazam is overall a better choice, but its trade-locked). Strongly disagree on Shiftry, tho. Not only does the guy have amazing speed thanks to Clorophyll and a good synergy with Blaziken if you set Sunny Day, but he also has both good Atk and Spa, which means that it can both use its two (special) stabs to their full potential, as well as other Physically offensive moves. Finally, Fake Out is the icing on the cake.

Thanks for making this team. I eagerly await what you have to share for the other Alternative Starters lists; assuming you choose to make them. To MY mind (very OCD), this is what’s left: 1) R/S/E Sceptile 2) D/P Empoleon 3) D/P Torterra 4) R/B Blastoise 5) R/B Charizard I saved #5 for last because that one IS the Hard Mode of Generation One. Two OPTIONAL additions are updated lists for Rillaboom and Inteleon, given the DLC updates for Sword and Shield. Now, I am by NO means trying to pressure you into doing these teams, but if you do, like I said, I eagerly anticipate what you have to say. Thanks again!

This is a good team! but I have a few suggestions. First, with our resident Flyer, why not make it Flygon? he learns the move and Cradily already covers rock moves. The reason I suggest this is that Rock Tomb is only 10 less base power than Ancient Power, and has 15 PP iirc as opposed to 5. So, save Rock Tomb for Lileep, and give Flygon Fly, this opens up a spot for the final team member as Crobat is no longer needed, thus, I recommend Exploud in the last slot to cover some HMs throughout the game, with a Moveset of Strength(Rusturf tunnel) Rock Smash(Mauville City) Shadow Ball(Mystic said this already for Gardevoir but I'll get to that) and Hyper Beam(Level 40) for a good nuke option, it should have no problem launching insane normal-type offense with it's quite solid 91 Base Attack, and handling ghost types that might get in it's way. To replace Gardevoir's now-open move slot, I recommend teaching it Thief with the TM you get from the Slateport museum, as while it may be 20 base power less than Shadow Ball, Gardevoir's special attack is just 5 points under double it's attack, and Thief would benefit from Calm Mind. as dark and ghost types share the same effectiveness, it helps with the same pokemon iirc, so I'd say its a worthy replacement. Now, while there's no Steel Wing coverage anymore, I can't help with that, but these new additions are, in my opinion, worth losing a bit of coverage for types that you likely already have answers to. Edit: Oh, and as someone mentioned a bit further down, Gyarados is a strange choice indeed, My recommendation is Tentacruel to replace it, they're interchangeable as they'll both do the same things just as well, but this is my recommendation. A moveset for Tentacruel would be, obviously, Surf, Waterfall, Ice Beam, and either Dive for convenience or Sludge Bomb for a decent STAB option, even if Ice Beam already covers Grass types. This means if you want Exploud to run Return over Hyper Beam you're free to as well for something more consistent.

I still dont understand how there was no physical special split in these games when the pokemon had both physical and special attack stats. Makes no sense that they wouldn't of accounted for that in the damage calculation of each move.
@destendgem4 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend Tentacruel over Gyrados. It's more designed for mixed attacks, and it's actually faster then Gyrados. No, really. Also, maybe Thief instead of Shadow Ball? Same type advantages, but you work off the Special stat at the cost of 20 power. I think that's pretty worth it.

For me: - Blaziken has Fire and Fighting stab. - Lotad/Lombre/Ludicolo in Sapphire and Emerald helps Torchic a lot. - Zubat works well with Torchic, as resists grass twice, has a good match ups and gets Sludge Bomb not too late. - Electrike does an amazing job, he works better with Torchic than the other starters. - Absol is a good teammate for the psychic monsters that hurt Blaziken. - Trapinch or Baltoy (Ground users with levitate and access to late Earthquake, they help a lot against Electric Types, and Dragon Type is amazing). And in ruby? - Replace Lotad with Shroomish, it helps as Breloom with Wattson, against Flannery. - Replace Lotad with Carvanha or if you have trouble with Flannery: Marill (Route 117).

A return to early Gens means Moves cost Poké. Flamethrower: 4K Coins Ice Beam (optional): 4K Coins Thunderbolt (optional): 4K Coins Okay then. Depending on when you want The three Staple Elements (perfectly balanced as all things should be), you will need to grind just a little bit. Thankfully, there’s plenty of items to sell to help you reach your goal. Required: 80K Poké. Pretty easy if you manage your money effectively. Optional: additional 160K Poké. Not as easy, especially if you’re having some bad luck and needing extra potions and such. Recommend the Soda Pop stand just South of Slateport for good healing in the mid game at a welcomed price. Beyond that, Emerald will let you rematch some Rich People on Route 103, so you can get some extra cash with patience as you go through your early game. Great team, and the cost is respectable depending on how patient you really are!
@Mrpovea4 жыл бұрын
gyarados is the second best water type? i don't think so, if you have the patience and time (a lot of patience and time), you can find one water type that is increidibly strong, and besides, if you want to grind a magikarp, finding it won't be so different, and leveling it up won't be so hard (even when you need knowelde of side mecanics to evolve it), yes, I'm talking about milotic, it has a fantastic special attack, and defenses as good as tentacruel. But if you dont wan't to spend your time (again, i swear it's worthy) use a tentacruel, that thing is awsome too (not as much as milotic, but it does an awsome job).
@xfdzfd43704 жыл бұрын
Well it's not always easy to get a Milotic. If the six random tiles are all above the waterfall, you are not getting your Feebas.
