NOTE: Do not look at the Sun through a telescope! You could seriously damage your eyes. (We're backed up a row of tall trees in the video, that's what Isaac was pointing at during filming).

Your videos are very informative, educational, and most importantly, easy to understand. Keep up the great work! I use my Z-100 for solar viewing with a solar film. Only being 400mm focal length I found it works well for bright objects. The dust cover comes with a big hole I taped the solar film to it. Use a 20mm eyepiece at 20x magnification it shows sunspots quite well.

Thank you so much for your videos and books. I have enjoyed 50 things to see on the moon. I have been keeping an eye for used telescopes and was able to find a Sky Watcher Star Travel 102 with an AZ3 mount with slow motion controls. Is this a good telesocope for a beginner? Stability matters most with kiddos. My 5 and 7 year olds have an issue *touching* the scope while observing, and a Go-To keeps that object firmly in view. If mom or dad can learn how to align it properly. Cheaper option is a tabletop Dob.

Hi John, we bought a telescope off amazon for Christmas 2022 and it seems to be pretty good for beginners, but the "camera tripod" is maddening!! I've been wanting to upgrade it but just don't know what kind would be best. Then I got to thinking maybe just invest in a whole new telescope altogether. Been looking at the table top Celestron Explorer 130mm dobsonion (with the star sense). I like the idea of a table top mount being a lot easier to move around for the kids, and the star sense app is pretty appealing. At this price point though, if I am to invest around $500 (CAD), is there something better out there? We are mostly interested in observing planets and I personally would like to be able to see some deep space nebulae. I don't want to fall into the Bird-Jones you warned about! Coincidentally, we purchased your kids stargazing book before I ever stumbled upon your youtube channel. Thank you for the great resources!

Hi Julia! You might be able to find one for a much lower cost either on sale on refurbished by B&H photo I really enjoy StarSense, and my Kids love the table top design. You need a laser collimator to check the mirrors ($25 on Amazon). I usually check this page once an a while as they often have this scope around $300: www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/802903899-USE/celestron_22481_starsense_explorer_130mm_f_5.html

The Omni 102 can be a real bargain when Costco puts it on sale for $160 USD. That said, at least my sample, and apparently several others have had problems with the slow motion control in altitude. I’ve tried many times to adjust the tension just so on mine and, well, unless the scope is perfectly balanced the slow motion won’t work. The dovetail supplied with the scope must be replaced with an 8 inch to have enough travel to balance the scope. And obtain a 1.5mm allen key to adjust out any slop in the focusing. Access is the two holes on top of the focusing mount. I would rate the included AZ mount as barely adequate (if that) for this scope. It’s better suited to a ST80 or other small, rich field refractor, also works with my Orion 90mm mak and the silly cheap 70mm mak from Spectrum Optical. Ok, rant over. John, you are providing a great service to the stargazing community with your videos. Thank you and keep up the fine work.

My Omni mount had not properly tensioned AZ clutch. I disassembled it, and adjusted the top nut. It's good that I have suitable Circlip Pliers, don't know how to put everything back without them. Also, I'd say, that amount of grease they applied to plastic gears is pathetic, so it's better to have some silicone grease on hand.

What an interesting video! Some years ago, I bought a Nikon 8x12 binocular for me and a kids type for my daughter. Hers it was a waste of money, because with plastic lenses, we could see better without then with. Now, that she is turning 7, I would like o to give a telescope for her, the choices on a budget are overwhelming and I know that a bad choice would be more discouraging for the hobby.

Hi John, I am new to your channel. Thank you for your video, it has been very helpful! I am beginning my search for a telescope for my 7 year old son. Our entire family will likely end up using the telescope. I currently have a pair of Orion 10x50 binoculars and I recently acquired a quality camera tripod and a binoculars adapter. I am wondering what are some reflector or dobsonian telescopes you would recommend for a beginner to grow into? Would a 4", 6", or 8" aperture be the best "bang for the buck?" My son will have adult help and I already know the night sky fairly well as I have been observing constellations and some messier objects on and off for years. Also, I am wondering if a dobsonian tabletop mount can be mounted to a tripod and whether or not you would recommend this? Or would it be preferred to mount on a table, or the ground if larger? Thank you for your help, Van
@LearnToStargaze
@LearnToStargaze Жыл бұрын
Hi! The best beginner telescope that you would LOVE would be the StarSense 8 inch dobsonian. It takes a while to put together, but StarSense is so easy it’s fun, and the telescope’s aperture is high enough to resolve a full compliment of targets with no compromises. If you’re on a tight budget, there is a table top StarSense now, but I don’t like having a table in the way, as I’m often going from one side of the sky to the other. Hope this helps!
