Honestly ground anchors or trampoline anchors are the best. But since I saw your test I was able to buy 16 steel Coleman stakes for $20 right now. Thank you

Those Home Depot Spikes are beast. They are between 60-70 cents by themselves. can tac weld an an eye or hook to the top side near the head if you have that luxury. Should last forever.

Thank you for taking the time to do that. You confirmed what I used. We've camped for years in the hard Rocky desert Southwest soil where plastic and aluminum often break. The 10 Inch Nails work great under most conditions. In softer soil with heavy winds I have obtained German / Swedish military aluminum v-shaped Stakes. The 10-inch spikes are my go-to steak! Happy camping!!

Great idea using the Home Depot stakes. I added a paracord loop around the washer. This way it even easier to grab with hook and to run the down lines through.. I will also paint the tip of the stakes a bright orange so it's a bit more visible. Thanks for the video. I might just use bright orange paracord to make a loop around the washer instead of painting them.

you did a good job here--cudo's for the idea of the screw-eye in the end of the hammer handle--that's really clever. I was looking for ideas for a pop-up tent I just bought, and this vid DID give me an idea on how to keep that type of tent on the ground in wind(s).thanks ! I have some oak wood scraps--will cut a "tee" shape, drill a hole for the landscaping spike to go thru. I want the "t" shape for a handle to pull the stake out, and the leg of the "t" to go down tight against the metal tent leg. this way the head of the big nail isn't down right to the ground.yeah, this could work!

Such ac n informative video on tent stakes. My husband has suggested I get the nail spikes and washers to make my own, and, with never using such ones before, I'm a bit surprised to see how well they work. I'm gonna be camping in my back yard and will be on a grassy terrain which has hard soil to it. So, with your suggestion as to how to remove the spikes, I believe I won't have any trouble taking them out of the ground when I have to. TYSM for sharing your techniques and knowledge with us. 👍👍

so essentially the home Depot stake is easy to take out during tear down because it comes out when pulled out straight. but the best when in high wind conditions. great to know, I need stakes for wasteland in September, that's in the Mojave desert in high wind conditions.

Those Coghlan Al tent stakes use a cheaper Al that is way softer and weaker than the 7075 and 7001 and specially tempered Al alloys that cost more that Easton, MSR, DAC, etc use. The MSR Cyclones are a beast that work well in a variety of conditions, but at MUCH lighter weight than the steel 12" ones. I do wish that MSR and other companies that use the high end Al alloys, made these longer and a bit cheaper though. The Cyclones in particular are quite expensive.

That orange aluminum Y stake looked like one of those Coghlan ones you get at Walmart. Definitely NOT the stakes you want. The design is sound, but I can actually pick one of those up out of the bin and bend it with my fingers. The very popular MSR Groundhog version, however, is much more rigid and I haven't yet bent any of those. Obviously the spikes are not even an option if you're backpacking. Car camping? Sure.

I use toughstakes stakes or deadmans stake in sand, much superior to regular spikes/stakes and standard insertion methods. I do use msr groundhawgs in soil though. Wisconsin river sandbar?

Thank you for sharing! Personally, I have my own "special" tent plugs (31 cm long and 50 cm long) for use in deep snow and / or in sand (from Hilleberg and Helsport). But I wonder if anyone has experience with pitching a tent plug - when there is frost on the ground? (eg when there is little snow). I know that e.g. Hilleberg makes a type called "X-peg". Hilleberg X-peg’s 30 cm (12 in) length. Has anyone of you tested tent pegs - when there is frost on the ground?

I think the aluminium one is the best because if you really don't care about weight and need maximum strength you should use the steel t-bar tent stakes that you can buy from different brands they are rocksolid.

I wonder how the hike depot spike would have fared in the straight pull had you used an angle grinder to grind out shallow barbs up the length

Would the home depot stakes hold up on soft sand in Miami to hold a shade tent?
@a1tanner528

In my experienced opinion this proves what I have always theorized. I hypothesize that inserting tent stakes vertically is more effective then at any angle. I actually believe that any angle more or less then 90 degrees by more then five degrees decreases the holding power of the stake by anywhere from 25 to 40 percent.

Once you get to the typical 45 you effectively halve the useful length of the stake, theoretically.

Buy some nylon bags. You fill them with sand and bury so the handles are sticking out. Then tie to handles.

You need to go digital and do a retest so we can see the peak digitally. Analogue is better for your EMF health but a digital read out for the sake of a youtube video is what we need. Anyone watching this is surrounded by EMF’s anyway so a digital scale with peak hold would have been useful.

You didn't even test a fraction of the tent stake designed. You literally only tested the nail style at 3 lengths and one v stake. Lastly that 12" stake is a ridiculous solution because I like to carry 12 stakes for some tarp shelter configs or have them for other items I may want to stake out in addition like a mesh tent or the ground sheet. 12 of those without the washer weights 4.7 lbs lololol bruh that is more than my entire shelter and mesh tent combined. Gimme an actually break
