You don't need to use Dymo branded labels with the Dymo 4XL. I've had mine since around 2014 and I've run nothing through it but the "Blank Labels" brand off of eBay ever since I bought it and it's been totally fine. Dymo brand labels are ridiculously expensive. The biggest thing is to keep the print head clean and free of adhesive and dirt...other than that it's a super solid label machine...I only have to clean mine a few times a year.

Agree, we have been using generic labels with 4XL since 2014 too, and it worked really good until now, when I noticed white vertical lines on the label. I don't actually blame it on the labels, I believe that 10 years for a label printer is pretty good lifespan, so it's time to get a new one. I was considering other label printers, but after looking around I think I will get the same one since I know I probably won't have to replace it for another 10 years.

@@Aleksa1185 That's crazy...as mine just started doing the same exact thing with the white lines through the label. I thought first it was a bad batch of labels so I ordered a different brand..but those did the same thing. Then I thought maybe the print head was dirty so I cleaned it and the lines didn't go away. Doing further research..I am convinced the same as you that the labeler has reached it's lifespan and that small sections of the thermal print head are going bad. I didn't know it until I researched it a little, but thermal labelers have a certain amount of labels they can make before you'll start having problems because the hardware starts to go bad. In my case...it's lasted about 10 years and printed hundreds of thousands of labels...not bad at all if you ask me. I've been looking at replacing it with a Rolo...but we'll see..I might just get another 4XL..although they've massively gone up in price since I bought the first one.

Pro tip. There's a reason why the labels come in a standardized array of sizes. It's the one-off sizes that are not "universal".

Consider the Toshiba BV410D direct thermal label printer with replaceable print heads.

I don't understand what kind of Moe Ron creates a printer that prints at a non divisible number of dots per inch. Were they insane? Is an inch the smallest unit? If I want to print a half inch square on my label will it occupy 101 and 1/2 pixels?

On my one inch long label I want to print half of the label black. How do I get an equal number of pixels on each half of a one inch label if my printer prints at 203 pixels?
