In this video we look at the 200 day and 10 month moving average. The study provides back test data going back over 100 years and essentially shows the benefit of a trend following strategy.
Staying with the trend, regardless of timeframe can improve your odds of success considerably. Whether you are a long term investor or a momentum breakout trader like myself, having a moving average indicator in your strategy can keep your drawdowns in check.

9:33 This analysis ties in with Nassim Taleb's concept of Fat Tails, i.e., remove fat tails (extreme negative drawdowns) and limit your risk. The equity curve differences also speak to Spitznagle's studies on geometric returns versus average returns, i.e., again the main factor is limiting massive drawdowns which should results in a higher return over time.

I feel a need to focus on complete growth so I went 100% stocks, but does the SP500 and TSM overlap too much to make sense holding both? However I’ve been in the red for a month now. A crash in the stock or real estate markets has less of an immediate impact on people's standard of living than inflation or currency devaluation. That the market is so negative at the moment shouldn't be shocking. If we are to survive in this economy, we need assistance right away. The ETF and stock markets are still quite volatile, just like the property market. Now all that's left of my $370K portfolio is ruins.

We are already in the big crash, Inflation is a catastrophe. This CPI report is a colossal failure. To bring the housing market to a halt, the FED will have to pull all the stops. The unfortunate issue is that other markets are being decimated. If you want to stay green, you have to rely on a lot of diversification. Currently up 14% and being careful. Still a better deal than leaving it in a savings or checking account yielding 0-1 percent interest.

Great info! How does dollar cost averaging compare to the 10 month MA approach? Thank you for the video! You've mentioned using leveraged derivatives (ETF) for this strategy. Brokerage companies posted disclosures/warnings NOT to hold/trade those for longer than a single day. Are you saying that strictly following the MA(10) strategy would act as an assurance of the contrary?

Some further considerations You mentioned the s&p500 strategy divergence. I wonder if building a strategy were you buy the divergences on the weekly and then selling/buying based in cross overs would be a good idea. I am sure you could also sell your position when there is a weekly bearish divergence. It would be interesting to see some short positions when shorting a weekly bear div/200dma 🤔

Would it be possible for you to produce a similar video evaluating the value of the 12 month SMA, applied with these two rules: 1. get out when the price of the index at the close of the month is below the 12 month SMA, 2) get back in when the price of the index at the close of the month is above the 12 month SMA for two consecutive months? Thanks.

Superficially that sounds good but what is the outcome if you factor in the cost of selling and buying stocks (or ETFs)? Also you don't want to have a large cash position on your bank account which in turn requires to buy and sell cash substitutes/equivalents like bonds.

Does the back test take into account of the tax consequence of the exits? What are some of the ETFs that replicate the strategy? People could just buy and hold these ETFs without suffering from the tax consequences of market timing.

Dead simple works but nobody has the discipline to execute, even if it means buying & selling something as infrequently, because they also dont have the patience to do it, even in a retirement account. Though a bit slow to execute trades off personally, 200SMA/40Week are great filters. Another cracking video Gareth! Im assuming though that backtests didn't include dividends? If not the results would be even better, especially if holding some sort of interest bearing bond/money market fund while sitting in cash!

Excellent video. Subbed. I love how the simplest things can be the hardest for people to allow themselves to execute due to people’s psychology with the markets. Something as simple and objectively provable in its effectiveness so hard for people to do while selling market bottoms is the hardest for people to get themselves to stay away from.

One critical point that in my opinion. Would be worth checking is tge robustness of the time average taken. Is there an evidence that if I look for example at a 12 month average instead of 11 I would still have a good return worse than the 11 m but still better than 13m?

Another super video! If only inveterate holders would a least consider modifying their approach, to incorporate at least some timing element, they would save themselves from the worst damage without years of charting practice. It has been upsetting to see some of the losses people have made in 2022. As you say this is a mechanical system and only on the periphery of charting. I think the problem is that 'some' of us humans have emotions, bias, fixed opinions and make presumptions etc.🤔 Good to see the charts using log scale...very useful. NoAxe

I'm pretty ignorant, but learning fast. After thinking about this for a couple weeks and tinkering on yahoo finance, I think I would use between a 6 and 10 month SMA with a monthly interval to determine my exits and then start watching more often for getting back in. I was just looking at VOO during the '22 peak and would have exited at about $407.22 with a 10 Month SMA and a monthly interval. I would then start using a quicker SMA on the weekly chart to get back in. I like this coupled with DCA when on sale. I still work, so I could only do a good job with this if I limit myself to a couple of funds. Jarrad Morrow's channel has a video about only having a couple of funds, "Investing In 2.5 Funds Can Make You a Millionaire." Works for me I think. Thank you for the education.

Awesome video and how do calculate the 10 month moving average? Do you calculated by adding up the closing prices for each of the last 304 days and then dividing by 304, or do you calculate in the same way but by months?
@theodordimov6518
@theodordimov6518 3 ай бұрын
I assume he's using a SMA (simple moving average as opposed to exponential), in which case it's just an arithmetic average like you mentioned, except I think he's using monthly candles so you would need the sum of the last 10 monthly closing prices and divide that by 10. If you want to trade on daily candles then I suggest running some experiments to see if it's indeed 304 days that you need or 210 (roughly the number of working days in a 10-month period). Not sure about that last part

How does this test change with added funds and allotments? For example do you not get this result if you buy ONLY on the upward cross and literally sit on your hands for years until the next opp? Or are you still profitable if you continue to scale? I feel like common sense would say if you insist on continuing investment, you’d rather DCA below 200 MA rather than above
