9:33 This analysis ties in with Nassim Taleb's concept of Fat Tails, i.e., remove fat tails (extreme negative drawdowns) and limit your risk. The equity curve differences also speak to Spitznagle's studies on geometric returns versus average returns, i.e., again the main factor is limiting massive drawdowns which should results in a higher return over time.

Dumb question... there's 20-22 weekdays in a month, so a 10 month SMA is equivalent to a ~210 day SMA right? Basically the same thing? I guess the difference is that the 200 day would be more volatile since it would be more like an active trailing average vs. the 10 month waiting for a month to close? Is that right, or do they both trail on daily changes?

Great videos thanks, I have some observations on moving average techniques. They all look very convincing on the chart because one imagines buying and selling at the crossover price, however in reality you have to trade at the closing price which often means buying high and selling low. For example, consider the last two years on SPY: following the 10 month moving average system you would have sold in Feb 2022 at 437, bought in March at 452 then sold again in April at 412. Then you buy back in November 2022 at 408 gaining 1% but give back 6% by selling in December at 382 and buying again in Jan 2023 at 406. Overall you would be down 10% compared to 2% holding right through the bear market. Another example, I ran a 30 year backtest on the 10 vs 20 weekly EMA crossover and got a 700% gain - not bad but buy and hold gives 814%. I have tried dozens of moving average combinations and yet to find one that works over the long term. I see other viewers have made similar comments and your answer is that these indicators give trading windows not buy and sell signals. That's fine but it's not what the videos imply. Happy to share my spreadsheets, I would love to be proved wrong.

You might include an added step for safety of capital...buy at the retests..buy when the crossover point is retested with lower volume. This would filter out the bad breakouts.. hopefully this helps.

You're first sentence is correct - this is the most important stock video . My question is : does this strategy work for leveraged etf's that always decline over long periods ( because they reset daily) , but may rise drastically over some shorter periods ? JNUG is a good example. However, AGQ , although a leveraged etf, does not exhibit the long term decline. I'm curious if you think the 10 month rule would still apply to leveraged, declining etf's in general, and these two etf's in particular. I am a paying subscriber, as well. thank you for any time you can give to this question.

Hi Dominic. I have the same question. Did you get an answer? If you did, would you be so kind to share it? I am looking into UPRO and can't see/understand the downside risk if you strictly follow the MA(10) on monthly chart. Thx in advance.
@dominicnocera9039 Жыл бұрын
@@simonm.5236 hi Simon, yes, I did get an answer. The answer was, whatever the ETF is trying to track, check the movie averages on that stock, instead. So for instance, if you’re trading in gold through Jung (which tracks gold miners), find an ETF, that tracks the minors precisely, and does not exhibit the depreciating nature. I like to trade AGQ, which is a leveraged, silver, ETF, and the reason I like to trade it, is because it does not exhibit the depreciating long-term effects. Compare a 10 year chart of AGQ versus Jung, and you’ll see what I mean. This means that a GQ could be held over long-term, whereas J nog could be more dangerous, if held for more than a few months at a time. Thanks for the comment. As a semi beginner and all of this, I’m always looking for investment conversations.

@@simonm.5236 hi again, Simon, I checked into you pro and it’s a leverage etf, just like TQQQ for the NASDAQ. TQQQ increases over time, with three times the volatility. But if you have the stomach for that, it would be an interesting long-term experiment, but only with small amounts of experiment or paper trading. I don’t give investment advice by the way, but, I thought of experimenting with TQQQ over the long term, once I know that QQQ has made a breakout. That might not happen for you or two, according to some experts.

Dead simple works but nobody has the discipline to execute, even if it means buying & selling something as infrequently, because they also dont have the patience to do it, even in a retirement account. Though a bit slow to execute trades off personally, 200SMA/40Week are great filters. Another cracking video Gareth! Im assuming though that backtests didn't include dividends? If not the results would be even better, especially if holding some sort of interest bearing bond/money market fund while sitting in cash!

For the 10 month moving average, are you talking about the 10 months SMA or EMA? Or it doesn’t really matter ? In addition, what time frame to use for the best result of the indicator ? TIA

Alot of people don't realize how dangerous buy and hold can be for emotions it can cause people to leave the market at the worse time and never come back. This happened to my dad's 401k. if he had implemented a strategy that limited losses he would have been able to stay in the market even if the strategy had limited returns vs buy and hold on certain years.

Does the back test take into account of the tax consequence of the exits? What are some of the ETFs that replicate the strategy? People could just buy and hold these ETFs without suffering from the tax consequences of market timing.

4:24 This graph shows why the success of this strategy over the time period chosen relies so much on that early, pre-1929 success by which time the MDA fund was more than double the S&P. From the peak in 1929 to 1941 the two strategies performed similarly, though the MDA avoided the worst of the crash. But since 1929 - or since 1941, if you want - the two strategies have experienced the same growth. If I'm going to pick a 'clever' strategy, I'm not going to go for the one whose main growth happened over a 100 years ago..... I do like the calmness in drawdown times but if I'm in for the long haul, there's little to choose between them.

But you can apply leverage to an approach offering lower drawdown.

Thank you for once again very informative and good video. But I still have one question: In the chart of the S&P 500 you seem to use the 10 exponential MA. In the Amazon and ARK comparison it agrees with me again to the simple MA.

Thank you for all your nice videos. I have a question about this strategy. Why when we are in cash during a big crash we wait the price to cross again the 10 month moving average while we could rebuy at a price way lower ? Even if we don't catch the bottom , i think it will be more profitable.
@FinancialWisdom2 жыл бұрын
I agree, I wait for the indecies to drop 25% and then start to average in (my trading approach is different)

So I feel like I am missing something obvious. The equity curve at the beginning of the vid shows $100k growing to $5M over a 60 year time frame (1960-2020) using the timing method. That's about 6.5% annualized. The actual S&P grew much more than that (~10.25%) over the same time period. What am I missing? Big fan of the channel by the way and just joined your website

Thanks Gareth. Fascinating. I usually equate the 200 day EMA with the 40 week EMA and the 10 month EMA. But I think this video demonstrates a meaningful difference. In terms of detail, I assume all trades on the 10 month EMA are ended or commenced on the first or last day of each month? Is that correct?

@chrisja199811 ай бұрын
No just change it to 300 It’s not capped by the number of trading days in a month. You can make an average of any amount of numbers.
@tommyhawk200011 ай бұрын
@@chrisja1998 Not true. A monthly candle is based on 20 trading days so the 10 monthly ma is equivalent to the 200 daily ma

I agree. Both are 200 days. And I think all MA’s are based on trading days not calendar days. Maybe he should say “period” instead of daily/monthly. Maybe the 200 period ma on a daily chart looks different than a 10 period ma on a monthly chart. Now I have something to do today. Or he should have said 300 day ma.

I think what he is doing is just using a 10 MA on the monthly setting. In the previous comment, he uses personally a 20 week MA which would be a 20 MA on the weekly.
