As people age, they don't absorb as much potassium, magnesium. This is often due to poor absorption in the gut due to aging and medications. Also get your Vitamin D levels checked. This was my reason. I drove myself crazy trying all these different routines and foods and it was nutrient deficiencies.

Even if I finished my 1 cup of coffee by noon, I could not sleep until 4am. Stopped my routine of 1 cup of coffee, and my sleep improved within 2 days. Tried drinking coffee again, and immediately no sleep. It's the coffee. It's the caffeine. But I'm sure I will get arguments on this because people LOVE their coffee. I used to love it too, but I'm not trading my sleep for it.

It might also just be metabolic, I was over exercising, under eating and not getting enough carbs which resulted in several nutritional deficiencies after 6 years etc (thought I was being healthy, felt great in the initial years) unknowingly I was putting my body in a catabolic state which will cause the body to stay awake and alert, as it is meant to. Think about what you are doing and what messages you are sending to your central nervous system via the way you eat exercise and live...you might be putting your body in survival mode and its simply doing what its meant to be doing. I cut back and changed the way I exercise opting for more anabolic promoting activities with ample recovery time, ate more frequent balanced meals and also allowed myself to take naps. It has taken a long time for my body to balance out and recover, I now don't even need to bother with or think about sleep hygiene, I get tired and sleep. I hope this helps someone in a similar predicament, the worst part is not knowing what is happening and how to recover.

If you don't get rem sleep for weeks, months, or years even, it does affect your immune system and makes you get sicker, and age faster. We need rem sleep to heal, for our cells to repair and our organs to rest and process what they need to process, even our brain needs the rest in rem sleep. REM phase of sleep is when you dream and your body organs and brain reset itself.

Dr. Nicole, what can be done for wanting to nap a lot during day and having low motivation?
@TheWrinkle
@TheWrinkle Жыл бұрын
I understand the feeling of wanting to nap in the afternoon! Some might call it a siesta! The best way to avoid naps is to participate in a stimulating activity like socializing with friends or working on an interesting hobby. Low motivation can be a symptom of depression and a side effect of some medications so that is worth ruling out as well.

Hi, my grandmother is 93 years old. She can't sleep at night and this is going on for like 1 week. She does not even sleep at day time. She looks so tired and anxious. She keeps forgetting a lot of things even our names and keeps saying random stuffs now and then. We gave her sedative 3 days ago and that made her sleep well that night. But after its effect has gone,she went back to not sleeping at all. We can't take her to the hospital because due to covid, they would test her and if she turns positive, they won't allow us to see her even if something happens. So what should we do now? (Sorry for my broken English as I am not a native speaker)

I'm sorry to hear that you're having a hard time talking to your medical provider about sleep, it must be very frustrating. Antihistamines are usually pretty sedating but shouldn't be used long term for insomnia. Many people can use sleeping medications for the short term, but in older adults they're best avoided.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having trouble sleeping. Quetiapine is a major tranquilizer/atypical antipsychotic type of medication that can cause sleepiness. Like all "sleeping pills" it can help with falling asleep, but not with staying asleep, and it can cause a hangover the next day. As I explain in the video, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for insomnia (CBT-i) is a drug-free approach to sleep management. It takes some work but it can be very effective. Thanks for watching and good luck!
