@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Dani! Great question! I will DEFINITELY be making a video on this topic but essentially, when you are getting closer to retirement (in your 50s and 60s) you don't really have the luxury of time and since you WILL NEED this money in a matter of years, you don't want to be making risky or volatile investments. You still want your money to grow but you don't want to risk having it tank since you don't have years to wait and let it recover
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
So in that case, when you're in your 50s I would suggest investing more heavily in conservative investments which produce passive income and don't swing up and down in value. So things like sustainable dividend stocks and ETFs and bonds =)

@CanadianTShirt

To a certain degree! Do NOT try to time the market! It really can't be done. By definition, you will NEVER know when you are at the bottom of the market until the bottom has already passed. So you don't want to hold onto a huge pile of cash for months or even years waiting for the market to crash. Instead, I suggest spreading out your investment over the course of weeks or even months! This way you are taking advantage of the dollar cost average of the market, rather than trying to time it and buy at the perfect moment =)

@@CanadianTShirt I guess this strategy makes the most sense with Questrade which offers free ETFs but I don’t think it would be economical to keep buying shares of stocks and paying commission every week right?
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
@@SY-dv3wz If you have a large sum of money, absolutely! If you only have $100 to spend every week on stocks, then no. Don't do that since you'll be wasting a ton of money on commission fees. But if you have a big pile of money like $10K. I would NOT invest it all at once! I would spread out my investment over time. Maybe something like $2K every week. This way you are not hoping to time the market right. Sure you'll spend an extra $20 or so on commission fees but it is statistically safer to invest at 5 different times than all at once =)

@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt Жыл бұрын
When you receive a dividend, that cash remains in your RRSP account so you can use that cash to reinvest and buy more stocks and ETFs. That's what you should do, remember the RRSP is designed for LONG TERM retirement investing. You "can" withdraw that cash but you will pay taxes on that withdrawal... You don't want to withdraw from your RRSP during your working years since you're in a high tax bracket. You want to withdraw during retirement when you have no income or very little income and thus are in a low tax bracket! =)

Just stumbled onto this channel, brilliant content Adrian! Got yourself another sub 👍 Would you say it makes sense to hold US ETFs in an unregistered account in Canada in order to help diversify, or because of the withholding taxation rules, would strictly Canadian ETFs be a better route? Keep up the great work man, I'll be coming here a lot!
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Michael! I really appreciate that! In an ideal world if you had unlimited RRSP room, you would want to hold US ETFs that pay dividend in your RRSP to avoid those taxes entirely but once your tax sheltered accounts are maxed out, you will have to invest in a non-registered account and thus pay taxes on that! US ETFs will not be taxed as favourably as Canadian ETFs since you don't get the more favourable Canadian dividend tax credit and although you will be charged the US withholding tax on those dividends, you can claim a foreign tax credit to avoid being taxed twice by both Canada AND the US
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
There is a TON to cover when it comes to non-registered investments taxation and I will be making several videos about that so stay tuned! But overall, yes you should still invest in US ETFs, diversifying across multiple markets is SO important, even if the taxes take a bit of a bite =)

Hi Adrian, love your videos. This was the exact video I was looking for. Thank you so much. All the etfs you mentioned are unhedged US etfs right? Does it matter if we buy hedged or unhedged US etfs in our RRSP?
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
Yes they are unhedged! They are purely in US dollars! I prefer unhedged funds since I really don't care about currency rate fluctuations, I care about the long term future of the company. Plus with hedged ETFs, you will usually be paying significantly more in management fees! I'm glad you found this video helpful and great question! =)
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
But to answer your second question, it does matter which currency you buy these funds in! I will actually be making a WHOLE video on US Withholding Taxes and how they work with ETFs but if you want to avoid this 15% withholding tax on US dividends you'll have to hold the ETF in USD and hold it in your RRSP! If you hold a CAD version of a US ETF (something like VFV) you will still get charged this 15% withholding tax! These rules can get quite complicated when it comes to international ETFs so stay tuned for that upcoming video! =)

There are various Canadian Dollar version of popular US ETFs however I don't usually recommend them for 2 reasons: One, the CAD versions are usually significantly more expensive with an MER usually 2 to 3 times higher. Two, CAD version of US ETFs do NOT get the same tax treatment! I always hold US ETFs that pay dividends in my RRSP account to avoid the 15% withholding tax on those dividends but if you hold the CAD version of those ETFs, you CANNOT avoid that withholding tax!

The only way to avoid it is to hold those US dividends in an RRSP account =)

@@CanadianTShirt Nice point and very great video as always! However if we hold these US ETFs in RRSP, there’s no withholding tax on dividends and no tax on capital gain neither? But RRSP defers tax right? So what part of tax are we paying when we sell these ETFs when we retire? And one more question, the more US ETFs you buy and when at retirement, if you have reached US$100K, it would be more complicated to declare foreign income, right? Sorry for all the questions and thank you very much in advance!

There are a ton of such ETFs such as VFV which is the CAD version of VOO, tracking the S&P 500. However, I avoid these for two reasons: The CAD version of US ETFs will have higher management fees and two, you WILL be charged the 15% withholding tax on these CAD ETFs since the dividends are coming from US companies. The only way to avoid this withholding tax is to hold the USD version of the ETF in your RRSP. I'll be making a whole video about this! =)

You are correct that if you're in a low tax bracket, you don't get much of a tax benefit from claiming your RRSP deductions but remember you do NOT have to claim the RRSP deduction when you make the contribution! You can put money into the RRSP and let it grow tax free and then years later, when your income grows to a larger tax bracket, THEN you claim that RRSP tax deduction to reduce your tax bill =)

I just want to make sure I am understanding this correctly. Both dividend and capital gains from US stocks will not be taxed on either the Canadian or American side if held in an RRSP account. Capital gains from a US stock in a TFSA will not be taxed on either side. But US dividends will be subject to the 15% American withholding tax if held in a TFSA. If these statements are correct, to avoid paying taxes, the idea would be to hold any US dividend stock in an RRSP account, and any growth US stock could be held in either a TFSA or RRSP. Please correct me if I am misinterpreting this. Also, let's say I do have US dividend stocks in a TFSA, when is the 15% withholding tax applied? Is it already applied on the dividend payment or will I be asked to pay the 15% on my tax report? Thank you so much for all the information and helping us understand more about money and investing.

This is a common question and it's intentionally confusing and even worse, different institutions have different definitions but here is the short summary. An index fund is just a fund that tracks an index, like the S&P 500. This can either be a mutual fund or an ETF. Generally speaking, when a bank refers to an index fund, they are probably talking about mutual funds which have higher management fees. But lots of ETFs, in fact most of the ETFs in this video would also be considered index funds since they track an index! I prefer to avoid the word "index fund" because of this confusion, I always use the term "ETF tracking an index" instead =)

VOO is an EXCELLENT ETF to gain exposure of the US market (S&P 500) for rock-bottom prices! It only has an MER of 0.03% which is practically free! It barely pays a dividend though, it focuses mainly on capital gains so if you want, you can hold VOO in your TFSA. The capital gains will be tax free but the tiny dividend will be charged the 15% withholding tax but this will be a very small amount. And yes, you can waive the US Withholding tax on US dividends in an RRSP, RRIF or a LIRA as well. This tax exemption applies to registered retirement accounts =)

Hey Adrian, thanks for the excellent video! I know you mentioned it is recommended that we should only invest in US ETFs in our RRSP accounts to avoid taxes. My current workplace offers a great group RRSP plan, with company RRSP matching and comes with a portfolio with low MER fees, so I'm trying to max my contributions there instead of a personal RRSP. I also am currently using WS for my TFSA so I am noticing the 15% withholding tax on my dividends. Knowing this, would you recommend I switch my TFSA in WS to QT or some other broker? Also, would you recommend to just invest in US ETFs in a non-tax sheltered account or do something else based on my situation? Thank you so much!
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
You should DEFINITELY take advantage of the RRSP matching since that is a guaranteed 100% return of your investment but most likely, that RRSP matching will max out at a certain point (usually around 5% of your paycheck) Once you've maxed out the RRSP matching, most RRSP plans just aren't worth it... they're basically mutual funds with slightly lower fees but it's your call! I usually suggest to max out the RRSP matching and then the rest of your RRSP should be in a self-directed RRSP Questrade account to be fully in control and minimize fees =)

I was not aware of the withholding tax when I first started with WS, so I had to research what it was and this is what the WS site tells you about those taxes and why they appear. help.wealthsimple.com/hc/en-ca/articles/360056584994 In that case, do you recommend I should see if I can transfer my WS TFSA to QT first, then try to sell the US investments in QT that were in my WS portfolio to just focus on CDN stocks? thanks again!

Hi Adrian, I am just about to purchase SPYD, and I would like to make sure I invest enough to qualify for the DRIP. However; I have tried watching your "What is a DRIP?" video, and unfortunately I am having difficulty following the directions on how to calculate the DRIP requirement. I would just use the amount you provided in this video; however, the price has changed since the making of the video, and I want to make sure I have an accurate calculation. Can you please demonstrate how I would calculate the SPYD drip amount at today's price? Thanks!!
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
The DRIP calculation can get trickier with ETFs since as I mentioned in this video, some ETFs will NOT have consistent dividends, they will change month to month.... But let's do a quick example to show how it works: SPYD share price: $41.70 Dividend per share: $0.636 / month (for this current month) A DRIP goes through when the dividend exceeds the share price so how many shares will we need? # of Shares for DRIP = $41.70 / $0.636 = 66 shares (rounded up) Each share today costs $41.70 so 66 shares will cost us: DRIP Amount = 66 x $41.70 = $2752 But again, SPYD is one of those ETFs which changes its dividend every month, so the calculation above ONLY works assuming they will pay the same $0.636 every month. In my video, I used the TTM yield to give a more reasonable "average" estimate. I hope that helps! =)

Yes you will need to fill out a DRIP Request form as seen in the video above and in my DRIP calculations I inflate the share price to ensure that my DRIP will go through even if the share prices changes! =)

Thanks for the video. What happen with US dividend ETFs listed in TSX? For example ZDY. I was reading the fact sheet and there is nothing mentioning about the 15% Tax if you hold your TFSA?! 🤔
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, ZDY will still be charged that withholding tax on those dividends! Even though it's a Canadian ETF, those dividends come from US dividends and thus will be charged the 15% withholding tax, even in a TFSA! The only way to avoid this withholding tax is to hold a USD version of that ETF and hold it in your RRSP =)

@@CanadianTShirt I agree, however you can see the dividend paid and received by an US ETF listed in the NYSE if you are holding it in a TFSA, but for the TSX the dividend paid and received are the same. Where can I see the 15% withholding taxes in this case? It is not quite clear....

You got it! Holding high yield US dividend stocks and dividend ETFs in an RRSP will avoid this 15% withholding tax. Canadian dividend stocks and ETFs are totally safe in a TFSA =)

You should hold US dividend stocks and ETFs in your RRSP to keep it tax free! If you hold it in a TFSA, those dividends will be charged a 15% withholding tax by the US government! I talk about this in my TFSA Mistakes video =) kzbin.info/www/bejne/qWXGc5yYgaaHhbc

You don't pay commission fees for ETFs when you buy them, but you do when you sell. Nice to know, even if it's not a big deal since they have low commission fees anyway.

Exactly! You'll definitely be BUYING a LOT more than you're selling and when you do actually sell, it will probably be a large sale all at once so those commissions fees will be negligible =)

could you do a video on Index funds vs. ETF, please ; also ethical investment funds for Canadian investors, do they even exist?
@CanadianTShirt
@CanadianTShirt 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! I get this question all the time but the short answer is that an index fund is any fund which tracks an index and thus is passively managed. So an index fund could be a Mutual Fund or an ETF. Usually, when people use the term index fund, they are referring to a mutual fund and thus it will have a higher management fee than an equivalent ETF. I don't like using the term index fund since it confuses people. I prefer to specify it as an ETF which tracks an index =)
