Great summary. I wasn't aware that the T480 could be upgraded to 64GB of memory. I don't need that much, but I do think a lot about upgrade-ability. Also, one more thing the T440p has that the T480 doesn't: An optical drive. I still use mine from time to time, and even if you don't it can be swapped for an additional hard drive/2.5" SSD. Nice video, I'm working on my own video guide for used ThinkPads in 2020, however I am focusing on a couple of different models on a tighter budget than the T480. I'm actually going to be looking at the "circlejerk" machines! :P I do like the T480 though, to me it really is the newest T-series machine I could recommend to someone because of the backwards changes made with the T490. As for the classic keyboard using a T25: When I read that article it seemed like he had not figured out how to get the layout working properly, similar to how when people first began swapping T420 keyboards into their T430's the keys were still mapped for the T430 layout. If that's been fixed then the T480+T25 chassis would be undoubtedly one of my dream machines. Once again, great video! Looking forward to more content!
@WolfgangsChannel5 жыл бұрын
That's true. Though you could still use an USB optical drive, especially considering how rare you need one these days. As for the HDD caddy, T480 can have 2 NVME SSDs, but yeah, T440p can have three, so that's 0:1 for T440p The classic keyboard mod on T430 is much more simple and thus more people do it. I'm pretty sure the keyboard layout is just a matter of EC patching on T480 as well, but since the process is so difficult, very few people actually went through with it.
@SebisRandomTech5 жыл бұрын
@@WolfgangsChannel I still use an optical drive pretty regularly, especially since one of my ThinkPad uses is digitizing old VHS tapes and making DVD copies. Plus I watch a lot of movies on my laptop so the drive is still good to keep around. Having NVME on the T480 is a nice plus, even though the speed improvements are only noticeable in certain use cases. I really hope they can figure out a relatively easy way to patch the T480's EC for a T25 keyboard, and make aftermarket T25 parts readily available. I would buy a computer like that in a heartbeat.

About a year ago changed my XPS 13 for an X220, no regrets. Better keyboard, trackpoint, tons of IO ports, coreboot compatible and several upgrades. Been thinking to upgrade to T480, you get a better screen, enough number of upgrades, more CPU juice and good battery life, but you lose all the other advantages. Failed to answer the most important question though. Is there a NEED for the t480? As they will likely be doing fairly similar range of tasks given there is no dGPU. I could care less about heat when I dont feel it at all on the keyboard. The t480 still has a long way to go to meet the same value proposition as the t440p as they are 5x-6x as much. Not saying its a bad laptop, they just exist in way different avenues of the value argument.

One thing I really don't like about the newer Thinkpads is the soldered charging (USB C/Thunderbolt 3) ports... it seems much harder to repair. Great timing, I was considering getting a T580, but found out that the screen has a PWM flicker?! Also the bezels on T480/T580 are way too big IMHO. Ended up getting a used Lenovo Y530 for way less. Everything is great so far except battery life (no bridge system), and I'm concerned about durability compared to a Thinkpad. Time will tell..
@SebisRandomTech5 жыл бұрын
What is everyone's obsession with bezels? Like, I understand not wanting them to be super thick like on some el cheapo laptops, but to me the T*80 bezels are fine. The thinner the bezel, the less of a buffer zone you have protecting the screen from damage in the event of a drop.

Im very happy with my small 4gb ram Thinkpad 11e, with intel M-5Y10c CPU. It's virtualisation frendly, resonable fast, 4 watts TDP CPU. Spend for him just 105 buks (without hdd, and charger). Perfect choise for working in the filds for the price. Use him with Linux Mint as main system. Be ware of mistakes, lenovo have a full ZOO of "11e" models with absolutely different specs, screens, CPU's and motherboards.

The T440p is really only a good solution if you can plug in wherever you work, cos its battery life is dismal, I've always thought of it as a "portable desktop." For people that need a great keyboard with awesome battery life and dont need a quad core beast, the t450s comes with a better trackpad/keyboard, with the 1080p IPS screen option, for much less than a t440p, without even including the upgrade $$ it requires on top. Add the extended battery and you have a whopping 16 hour battery life which is still first rate even in 2020

Love the battery life. Do you think the T480 is powerful enough to day trade with without issue? All the Forex guys on youtube recommend minimum 16G RAM, SSD gaming laptop with the reasoning being you don't want any slowdown during trade. The programs used though are MetaTrader 4 (which looks like program from 1994) and Metatrader Desktop program which is used for chart analysis. I have a gaming laptop I bought but the battery life is atrocious so I want something else I can take on the road and I love that the T480 has such great battery life. Also do you have any recommendations on 17" screen models? For trading purposes 17" is much better for the job (and has a number pad which is important). Thanks for your time and for making this video. Extremely thorough. Subscribing.

Workstation laptops usually don't have the best battery life. Beefy hardware eats through battery very quickly and there's only so much Wh you can fit until you can't take your laptop on US flights anymore (I think 100Wh is the limit atm). I'd recommend sticking to U-series Intel CPUs (or the newest Ryzen machines), no discrete graphics since it consumes more battery, 90Wh+ battery, QHD display for more screen real estate.

A T440p would cost about $500-600? You can get the T440p will all the upgrades (quad-core i7, FHD IPS, 3 key touchpad, 16GB RAM) for about or under $350. I bought my T440p for about $145, FHD IPS screen is about $55 (you can get them for about $43 if you don't get the official Lenovo FRUs), 8GB of DDR3 (to upgrade to 16GB) is about $25, backlit keyboard is about $30, 3 key touchpad is about $18, and a good quad-core i7 CPU can cost about $80. That adds up to $353, and that's if you go all out. 8GB of DDR3 is perfectly fine for doing web browsing, HD video etc, and you don't necessarily need a backlit keyboard. A basic T440p with a quad-core i7, any FHD IPS panel, 3 key touchpad, would cost about $311. And don't forget, you can sell your old parts. I managed to sell my old i5-4200M CPU for about $30, and I sold the old ClickPad for about $5. You could also sell your old keyboard for about $10, depending on the condition. That takes about about $45 from the cost, bringing the price down to $266-308. Saying a T440p would cost $500-600 dollars is just wrong. It's more like half that. I don't mean to be rude or offensive.

Where are this kind of prices? I guess you mean USA, in EU we have crazy high prices. I have bought T430 with 1600x900 screen, blacklit keyboard, 8gb of ra, i5-3320M and 250 evo 860 samsung for 250euros which is something like 280-300$. Now for same laptop I still need to pay around 200-250euros. I was looking for X1 carbon 3gen for my wife and the price are like 350euros++++ for fullhd, 5300U, 8gb of ram and 240ssd. In good condition, if you would like to get something more packed you need to spend like 450euros. I was looking also for t460, price start around 300+ euros for basic specification. T440P are a lot cheaper now, medium price is around 220-250euros but you get most of the time 8gb of RAM, i3 or maybe i5-4300M if you are lucky, 240gb ssd and that's all in OK condition, for good one with nice spec, backlit keyboard etc you need to pay atleast 300-350euros. If you want to buy something in really good price and ofc good condition with decent spec you need to look very long time and maybe you will find something in "good" price. Cheers

X280 is priced similarly to T480 if you want to buy it used or refurbished. You can theoretically buy a X230 and upgrade it (Nitrocaster FullHD mod, SSD, 16GB RAM, 9-cell battery, classic keyboard) but at this point you'll have to shell out around $400-500. Better spend a bit more and get a modern machine. Beware that the RAM is soldered so you'd want to buy the 16GB version. Alternatively if you're on a tight budget, just buy the base model of X230 and don't upgrade it. Would still be a far better choice then the cheap Walmart laptops.

You just forget that upgradeability of processors also mean longevity, you wont have bga issues if you dont have a bga directly holding the chip. So even if i dont upgrade from a haswell 4th gen i5 from the long dead M lineup, if for some reason the cpu died, i would just replace it. While that if my U cpu dies, its bye bye to the whole motherboard. I'm not saying this would or would not make getting the new one a bad idea. Just saying its something to take into account
@WolfgangsChannel4 жыл бұрын
Fair point, but I don’t think CPUs fail all that often these days. I personally never heard of that. On the 90s computers even the L2 cache was socketed, but we don’t see anyone complaining about it anymore. Does it reduce repairability? Definitely. Do L2 caches fail often enough to justify that? Not sure. Does it help reduce the footprint and heat, and pack more performance into smaller package? Also yes. Besides, PGA CPUs are harder to find nowadays since they’re not produced anymore, and the ones you’d want to get (quad core i7s) are pretty expensive for what they are. At some point in time it’ll probably be cheaper to buy a new computer than to get your hands on a CPU replacement.
