Addendum: The Klein actually DOES lock in the halfway open position. I did not realize that because in normal operation (flipping it out) it flips right past the halfway lock. But upon further usage I discovered that it does actually lock in that position giving it one feature that the other drivers do not have (unless you count the Lenox's strong detent in that position.)

I had the Milwaukee and would beat on it with a hammer to cut through shingles. The cast part that holds the knife broke but the metal on the backside held it together. Bought a new one but the broken still works like normal. It’s in a drawer somewhere.

Great run down! I'm a welder/mouldmaker and I daily the fastback. It's not perfect but it's fast and effective. That Toughbuilt looks really, really enticing, though! The Hart and Milwaukee are owned by the same company, TTI. I would not be surprised if they were made in the same factory.
@NickDoesThings-
@NickDoesThings- 12 күн бұрын
As I understand it TTI acquired Hart to sort of beef up their selection of hand tools. I am a shareholder and that was what they said back when they made the acquisition. But it seems like they pivoted from that to simply offer an entire line of tools for homeowners. I'm not sure about the production. I know Milwaukee does some manufacturing in Germany, and Mexico as well as China and Vietnam. But I am pretty sure Hart is only produced in China. Not sure if that means anything. I personally could care less about where a tool is made if it is good. And the fastback is good. Thanks for the comment!

Thanks for posting, Nick! The Hart bit storage holders look like copies of Gerbers bit holders on their earlier knives... Gerber chose a brittle plastic that would break readily. The Klein shorter bit holder looks like it allows for 2" bits to be used with the system, like magnetic nut drivers. That's a nice feature.
@NickDoesThings-
@NickDoesThings- 8 ай бұрын
I can confirm that the Klein works better by taking out the bit holder and running a 2" bit. Less slop and still long enough to easily open. None of the nut drivers that I have will fit unfortunately. But it looks like one could do it if the driver were short enough. The width could be accommodated by the cutout for the finger pull. I think I will likely shoot a followup to this video in a few weeks. Thanks for your comment!

I'm a Facilities maintenance worker, I EDC a 6 in 1 Fastback 24/7,(Swiss Champ, Knipex 5" Cobra & Pliers wrench, Kline 1/4 -3/16 flip bit & 8' tape measure) keep one in my personal truck and one in my work van. I don't see anything in the others to change that. I take the pocket clips off immediately and use Ti coated blades to prevent rust, especially in the summer when I'm landscaping 3 to 4 days a week at 19 locations around the county. Regular utility blades rust fast when drenched in sweat.

The Lennox knife used to be my favorite for a long time. That was until I got a job where I needed one with a screwdriver. So I started my search and ended up with the Toughbuilt one. It is heavy and a little big but functionality wise it's the best. Because of its size and weight and the rectangular shaped handle it works very well as a screwdriver. The Phillips bit is also very good. Because of this you get a lot of torque for driving fastners. Even more than a regular screwdriver.

I destroyed my Milwaukee Fastback by trying to make the hinge on the blade more smooth as it was difficult to swing open. I bought a regular HART utility knife and LOVE that it has the "gravity" close feature such as the one you reviewed for the Tough Built. I will definitely be adding this other HART Utility Knife with the screw driver bits!

ABSOLUTELY! I bought one for my wife but I got one too, I had NO idea it would feel so nice in the hand. It is incredible. The only issue that concerns me is the plastic bit holders with spring, it just worries me that they’ll break and I can’t use the one of 4 bits. I thought I was the only one, the weight of the knife, the shape, the fast back action, it’s just perfect. Well done. Also, the magnet on my Hart is actually very strong. I have a hard enough time pulling the bits out that I can’t Imagine the bits getting pulled out so maybe a small quality control issue?

Milwaukee 6in1 Fastback is my favorite. Milwaukee has now replaced the wire retention ring in the 1/4" bit holder with a ball bearing type retainer. Spec ops makes a utility knife that's really thick, 2 blade storage, no driver but has a window/skull crusher point on the butt end that is just an extension of the aluminum body, not carbide or tungsten. I've carried the Spec ops quite a bit along with a small keychain prytool. But i always come back using the Milwaukee. i put a serrated blade in the Milwaukee for cutting cordage. Thank you for the review.

I want to say thank you for this. If I wouldn't have seen this I would have just jumped on this Klein blade. Not because of brand loyalty because it's orange AND a good brand name. However I would have been upset with that quality especially since my daily is the same Fastback you have in the video. I tried a similar style Husky brand without a driver. It was poorly weighted where the handle was too light and upon flipping open you could feel the knife wanting to jump out of your hand. Anyway I appreciate you saving me the money of finding out the Klein is trash as I'm the guy who would go I could use that extension for my drill I use my bit out of my Fastback in my drill all the time.
@NickDoesThings-
@NickDoesThings- 8 ай бұрын
Right on man! I’m glad I could help you decide. Unfortunately I DID jump on the Klein. I figured since they were so closely copying the fastback, that they just have improved it in some way. But sadly they did not. That said, if you regularly use the bit from your fastback in your drill then you probably would find the Klein bit holder useful. Also you can remove the bit holder all together and put in a two inch bit like we all use in our drills. For me, when I use the driver in my edc it is because I don’t have my drill handy, so the bit holder doesn’t make sense for my usage. Also I prefer to have the double sided bit like the fastback and toughbuilt. Thanks for the comment!

Hart is made by TTI just like Milwaukee, Ridgid, and Ryobi. All their power tools have a 3 year warranty and most hand tools have limited lifetime warranty. Cool comparison! Like you, I use a utility knife constantly at work. Cutting boxes, pallet strapping, plastic wrap, burlap, etc. I edc the fastback, but we’ve got a bunch of random ones laying around at all times. The Lenox gold and a similar husky version, an old fixed blade Stanley, and an assortment of cheap Amazon ones. The Milwaukee is a dream. I’m constantly taking it in and out of my pocket and it’s just super quick and handy. I also use the driver a good bit and it’s perfectly adequate-I actually tend to one hand close it as well. I’ve really strongly considered getting the toughbuilt as I have some other stuff from them I really like. I think it’s just a bit too big for me to enjoy carrying, but seeing your comparison makes me want to go grab one to throw in the home tool bag or just have laying around. Thanks man!

Yeah, there is a line when it comes to multi tools. As soon as I start thinking about all the things I can carry in my pockets I quickly end up with too much. It’s hard to pare down from a multitool without feeling naked. lol. I ended up keeping my multitool in my backpack, that way I have it nearby if I need it. Some guys might leave it in their glove box. That said, if it doesn’t bother you to carry it, why change? For me, 90% of what I use my multitool for is cutting, screwdriver, and bottle opener of course. So I rarely feel I am missing out with the fastback. All depends on what you do from day to day. weight and size are of the utmost importance to me. if i JUST want a knife, im going to be using the small work-pro that takes up NO space, so the main part of this is the screwdriver. that said, 3 of them loose off the bat. i have been edc-ing the fastback for a few years and have only one minor complaint - ease of removing the spare blade. i have to say, watching the toughbuilt, the whole time i was just thinking "its too big" and then you touched on that at the end, but that pry-bar though.... ill probably end up picking one up and giving it a try. i dont know if the prybar is going to make up for the real estate it takes up, but its worth a go. one thing about the hart, i like nearly nothing about the design, other than 4 bits. i think 2 flat and 2 philips is a waste, that knife would probably be a hell of a lot better with just 1 #2 phillips, 1/4" flat, and on the other side a t-20 and t-25. they are much more needed in a pinch than a SECOND phillips ever is.

Well said! One can ever go wrong with the fastback. When I carry it, after carrying the Toughbuilt, I do sometimes really miss that pry bar. That said I really miss the bottle opener on the fastback, especially after work! haha I like the 4 bit capacity on the heart, but the actual driver function is wanting. You have to have the whole knife right up on whatever you are screwing so it wont work in areas where you need any reach. That said, the 4 bit capacity is nice. I am like you, I customized the bits to better reflect the fasteners I run into day to day.

I'm a Lowe's guy and a bit of a Klein fanboy so I picked up the same Klein one the other day and have been EDCing it. My housemate has the Milwaukee and I hate to admit it but it's definitely the better design, I wish I had a flathead instead of the removable adapter (particularly weird when you think about how common flatheads are in Klein's bread and butter electrical market) and, while the 45 degree lock is cool in theory, I find it kinda hard to reliably flick past it into the full straight position. The bottle opener and blade storage would've been nice too.
@NickDoesThings-
@NickDoesThings- 7 күн бұрын
Same and same. Yeah, you would think that the flathead would have been the first choice for Klein. To be honest, I far prefer the Klein brand over Milwaukee. This knife is one of only two Milwaukee tools I cary. But I have a bunch of Klein stuff that I love. Its hard for me to admit how well M did with their fastback line! 😅 If I had never used the fastback, I probably would not have been so hard on the Klein in the video. But because it was such a similar product, the shortcomings were just more obvious when using both. PS I definitely use that bottle opener a little more often than I probably should!

Yeah, I know TTI acquired heart a few years ago to fill out their hand-tool line. But just because the same conglomerate owns multiple brands, doesn't mean the brands are the same. Different companies with different engineers and designers using different materials to different tolerances, manufactured in different places (most typically). Half the power tools at HD are TTI, but they are still different brands whose differences are more than the color of plastic. Although, sometimes you do find some that are just a rebrand of the same product. Thats always funny. Red must be an expensive color! 🤣

@NickDoesThings-

Affirmative. Standard 2" bits fit just fine, with a little room to spare. And there is slightly less wobble when ran that way. The included bit holder seems to have very poor tolerances and accounts for much of the looseness. Also my JIS bits fit even tighter than standard American 2" bits.

I carry and use the Milwaukee, and I like everything about it *EXCEPT* it feels like it opens too far. I feel like it should stop when the "blade" part is more in line with the handle, not a few degrees past it.

Very nice video comparing these. Fastback is my top pick as well. I disagree that its a 2 hand close since i have always been able to close mine with 1 hand. that tough built is a solid tool and i love the little pry bar. its too bad that is so much bulkier though. i dislike having it in my pockets. The klein is such a joke and hard copy. i really dont see anyone using it besides YTubers trying to be edgy.

Milwaukee has the best design for now, but their bit holder is the weak point and the bits are proprietary. Klein is a close second, but the pocket clip catches on seats, you don't get a two sided bit, and no bottle opener. (I do like the impact driver because sometimes my drill might be missing one and I can just borrow it from the knife in my pocket.)
@NickDoesThings-
@NickDoesThings- 12 күн бұрын
Do you think the bit holder on the Milwaukee is the weak point because of the fact that the bits are proprietary? Or is there another reason you don't like the bit holder? I used to have a fastback that did not have a ball detent. But the one I cary now does have a ball. Therefore it has no problem accepting different bits. Although, I haven't tried any other double sided bits because I don't have any. But I suspect it would work just fine for them.

@@NickDoesThings- I've had the screw that keeps the bit holder there come out, I've had the old-style internal band fall out and lost the bit, and the new-style external band came off on the first day with my newest one. It just isn't a good design and the fact that no ordinary bits fit it is a hassle too.

@@NathanBake Dang bro, you have had some bad luck with these things! Or maybe I have just had good luck! I have not experienced failure. I have had multiple, not because they have malfunctioned, but because I lost them, then found them again after I purchased a replacement. There is definitely room for improvement thought. I carry the Milwaukee 6 and 1 fastback for quite some time and the only gripe ever had with it was when you would shut it. The utility knife blade would slam into the bit holder in the back because there is a gap where the blade can go through and the very back of the knife and then you would have a dull spot on your blade. So then I went to the Milwaukee compact fastback
@NickDoesThings-
@NickDoesThings- 8 ай бұрын
huh! I haven't heard that one yet. I am looking at mine right now and I can see how that would be a possibility. However, mine looks like there is plenty of clearance between the bit holder and the blade. Perhaps after it wears out a bit that starts to happen. Did this happen on multiple of yours? Or could you possibly have had a defective one? Also, apparently there are a few generations of these. Do you happen to know what gen you were carrying? Maybe its something they fixed? Now I am going to obsess over this and take mine apart. haha!

I don't know what is happening there. You can still find it online id different places under different names. Google "Toughbuilt Electricians 5 in 1." Maybe tag "pry bar" and "folding knife" in the search. You should find it that way.

Klein now makes a lot of stuff in China. It is likely marketed toward electricians. The impact rated stuff is likely because everything is becoming impact rated. Why make 2 kinds? Also, it is replaceable if you can grab it off the shelf if you lose or break it. The Hart one is the same no name design that you can get at Tractor Supply every now and again in the bargain bin.
@NickDoesThings-
@NickDoesThings- 8 ай бұрын
Oh yeah, definitely made in overseas. Though, despite the fact that Klein is a brand geared more towards electricians, the only tool in this video that one of the companies specifically says is for electricians is the Toughbuilt. It's called the "Electricians 5-in-1." I really think the Klein is going after some of the marketshare of the Fastback. As to the bit holder theory, good paint, companies should probably just go with all impact rated stuff these days. However it might not show from the video, but that bit driver is very small. I have never seen another one that small. So it would be hard to replace. And if you put a standard bit holder in it, it is too long and wont close when carrying a bit. I am going to do a follow up to this video in a few weeks discussing this stuff a bit more and brining up some of the comments. Thanks for weighing in. Curious if you have any other thoughts?

Which one works best, with the Leatherman ratcheting bit insert?
@NickDoesThings-
@NickDoesThings- 8 ай бұрын
Thats a great question. Unfortunately I don't have one to try out. I think, because it is flat, having a strong magnet would be important. The fastback uses a retention device so it doesn't have a strong mag. If you take the bit driver out of the Klein and use your bit insert in ints place, you would have a bag but it is pretty shallow. The Toughbuilt doesn't have a very strong mag, however, the insert goes down much deeper than the other drivers so It would probably give the most surface area contact for your flat insert. I would say Klean, or Toughbuilt. I wish I could say more but that is just a guess.

I think you mean shorter reach. If they wanted longer reach, they could have built it longer like other brands, instead of using the gimpy little cheap bit holder in the mix. nnnnnot really. @ProjectFarm did a comparison from which I believe Milwaukee came out on top (If I remember correctly). But my take away from the comparison is that the Stanley blades perform really well for the money. So that's what I use. TBH I change blades constantly. I'm not one of those guys who uses a blade until its no longer a blade but rather a sliver of metal...lol. As soon as I sense some dulling I swap.
