/ bikemanforu How to do a dial-in V brake tune-up including the importance of cable stretching and tire inflation. Free shipping www.bikemanforu... on bike parts, tires, tools, and cycle accessories. In the last tutorial of his six-part instructional series on V brake adjustment, BikemanforU starts by pointing out a problem with the brake casing installed in part 5. The cable doesn't properly enter the cable end / lever. Some mechanics like to crimp the ferrules but BikemanforU does not. "I don't like crimping it because it might hurt the cable going through the casing. It might bind it a little. If it's all installed properly, I've never in a million years had a problem with it." Watch the entire V Brake tutorial playlist bit.ly/1a6q6Wf and see how BikemanforU has dialed in by installing a new cable and housing, a brake noodle, checked pivot points, and installed and adjusted new brake pads. The brake cable has been strung through just enough to hold everything together. Before he continues, BikemanforU cautions, "Make sure your tire is pumped up to maximum tire inflation pressure. Believe it or not, your rim will swell a couple thousandths of inches out from the pressure of the tire...I can't emphasize that enough. Make sure you do that." He's working on a Specialized hybrid that was a rusted victim of Hurricane Sandy. The bike's in for a complete overhaul, including brake repair. BikemanforU loosens the cable and then shows step-by-step how to pre-stretch the cable itself by working the levers and loosening the barrel, then using the cable like a trigger. Pay close attention to how he positions his hands and fingers as he works the cable into position. After a brief interruption to receive bike parts from Dennis, our UPS driver, he continues to show us his hand technique for cable stretching. "As I'm holding onto the cable, I can pull or release accordingly," he explains. The brake pads are rubbing; he tests the grip lever, and continues. "You're firming it out, man, you're making sure." Then he locks down the cable and shows how to prevent tire rubbing by centering your wheel and making sure your brake pads are angled correctly. He moves onto spring tension adjustment to make the brake assembly move one way or the other as needed. But before you can even get into any brake work, you have to start with a straight wheel. "First and foremost, your wheel has to be straight and I can help you with that." For the truth about wheels, watch this playlist • Truing A Bicycle Wheel for more pro tips and tutorials from KZbin's how-to guru of DIY bicycle repair. Excellent V-brake tutorial, particularly the part about adjusting the tension. I like the smooth way you accepted the UPS delivery in the middle of filming, without it seeming even like an interruption. Great video!

Just wanted to say thank-you! I have a 13 year old son that has no interest in learning how to work on cars, but with a little entertainment to start from yours truly "the BikeManforU" I got him interested in repairing his own Trek 7.4 brakes. How's that commercial go . . . priceless

Thanks. No more annoying rubbing of pads on one side of wheel. Great idea to add more tension to springs by pulling them away and bending them a bit to add more reflex. Bikeman. your the man!!!

Thanx for posting. I note you you use the left lever for the front brake. I have not seen a set up like this before; road or MTB. The same is true of motorcycles; i.e right lever, front brake. Are you left handed or is this a personal preference? Some good tips tho

Use at your own risk! but you might be able to use two larger fender washers to sandwich the dropout and spread the load. Personally, with my age and what I weigh I think I would just scrap the frame. If it has stamped dropouts it is probably not worth much anyway. Bending might weaken it to the point of snapping under stress if it didn't break during the actual procedure.

Thanks, I bought a new hybrid recently but it didn't come with any kind of manual or even a leaflet explaining how to do that brake adjustment stuff. Hell I didn't even get any tools with it and have had to go chasing round tool shops buying spanners and screwdrivers and things. Are the brake spring adjuster screws Philips or Posidrive or whatever? Mine have got a cross like hot cross buns.

+Tungsten Kid That sort of stuff is common sense for most people Kid... and no... you don't get any tools or service manuals when you buy a new bike.... are you for real man?

HOPKIRK - if you don't know the answer to my question just say so mate..;)
@mynameisHOPKIRK
@mynameisHOPKIRK 8 жыл бұрын
+Tungsten Kid Your "question" is pretty much pointless... there is very little difference between the two... you are not using major torque on the adjustment screw... so it doesn't matter if it is one or the other... you could even use a small flat headed screwdriver if need be... come on man, or do you need a manual on that as well... seriously!
@tungstenkid2271
@tungstenkid2271 8 жыл бұрын
+HOPKIRK - I contacted Saracen and they said the bike shop should have given me a manual that's issued with every bike, so they kindly sent me one, it explains everything like tyre sizes etc etc, absolutely essential. In my cycling club days in the past, bikes were much simpler, especially as I bought the cheapest I could get, but nowadays they seem more fancier and fiddly the higher up the price scale you go. PS- if bikes are as easy to understand as you claim, why are there instructional bike maintenance videos and bike maintenance books and magazines?
@mynameisHOPKIRK
@mynameisHOPKIRK 8 жыл бұрын
Hold your horses, I did not claim bikes were easy to understand, I believe I mentioned common sense... which is something most kids learn as they dabble with bikes whilst growing up, usually from necessity. The basics of bike maintenance is second nature to most as it is part and parcel of growing up... and as for there being many instructional videos and forums online to learn from... that is because plenty of people are absolutely clueless in this day and age when it comes to the fundamentals and mechanics of a Bicycle... some specialist components are a little more "fiddly" as you put it and they need a little help in understanding either the form or function of things.... or maybe performance... maybe they are numbers geeks or whatever. Not only that but whatever you are into these days, music, woodworking, etc, etc, there are like minded people in abundance online who like discussing these things, sharing their knowledge, or just showing off what they own...either because of rarity or value or even just helping you save some money with some know how... because it is of interest... and sometimes all it is is nerdery. What you said about maintenance videos and bike maintenance books and magazines... is a bit like saying there is so much pornography available because people need to know how to have sex properly... (or how not to, as the case may be) There is very little you should not know how to take care of on a conventional bike... they are simple creatures, with basic needs and you don't even have to feed them. Talking of Saracen.... I haven't seen one of those things since the nineties... and I wouldn't worry about the manual that you were not given by the dealer... because if it is anything like the one I received with my Carrera it is useless
