KZbin channel 'VancityAudi' did dyno testing on this model, testing 87 and 93 Octane and the 93 made NO more power, actually a negligible amount less. The cR was 100% STOCK. Very bizarre, but fantastic news for those not wanting to break the bank on premium gas; cause there is now no reason to waste your money.
@DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
That is very interesting!! I’d say you are right that it is very bizarre for the fact that modern turbo German cars typically ALWAYS require 93. What’s not bizarre is that if VW in fact did recommend regular only, rather than premium at all, I would expect that the car wouldn’t make any more power at all with 93, just as it has been with pretty much every other car in the past. I’m not exactly sure what VW said specifically regarding the GTI whether using 93 claimed to make more power or not. However, I was certain that it said you can use 87, so I guess that’s the recommended octane! Obviously, we all know that this is an ongoing debate. But, it’s pretty much been proven that higher octane doesn’t increase horsepower. Higher octane gasoline only has a higher resistance to compression before detonation. That’s pretty much it! It’s used in higher HP/higher-end cars, but it is not to make more horsepower, it is to limit pre-detonation or engine knock in a higher compression engine. I think that’s where a lot of the misconception comes from. Thank you for letting me know that about the GTI though! That’s very interesting to hear. Also, I very much hope you enjoyed the video. @@DoubleClutchAutoReviewswell, it’s not hard to believe because it’s not a matter of the engine or turbo. It’s a matter of the vehicles tuning. And from the factory, it’s tuned to be used with 87oct. So to put anything more than 87oct in it is pointless. Matter of fact, my MK7 GTI is advertised to use 91oct gas. So I used it, but I eventually started using my car for work more (unfortunately during this current USA Presidents term, aka high gas prices). I was already FBO IS38 and custom tuned. So I contacted my tuner if he could make an 87oct tune for me. He said no problem. With this tune, it will be slower than my 91oct tune file(s), but that didn’t matter to me because this was going to be my “work tune”. Most importantly, it allowed me to buy cheaper fuel without hurting my engine, because it would be tuned for 87oct (using a lower octane on a higher octane file isn’t good). Well, I’ve been running this time for over 2 years, and I even have an 87oct file using my WMI. Yeah, a 91oct file with WMI would be faster (probably 20hp more over 87oct), but I don’t care. Tbh, my 87oct WMI file is faster than my previous 91oct files (without WMI). And my 87oct WMI file maxes out at 26psi, while my non-WMI 91oct files maxed out at 27.5psi. So basically what I’m saying is it’s a matter of the vehicles tuning on what oct of gas the car can take. Whatever octane the vehicle is tuned for, it doesn’t make any sense to add higher octane to it, because you won’t gain any power from it because it’s not tuned for it.

Love my 40th so far. The handling is indeed the best part and first time ive had a variable ratio rack. The car just turns in harder the more input you give and makes it feel more enthusiastic. I leave it in the stiffest setting 90% of the time. It's punchy for me in stock form power wise but i'm sure ill get an itch to tune it. The turbo is also changed from the mk7 but I don't think it's larger, just more efficient. Still has just as huge tuning potential.
@DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
The handling is certainly where it’s at! I can totally understand why you have a desire to tune it though. I'm not sure how they did that, because V6s are typically not easy to make sound really good, but they absolutely nailed it with that one. This car definitely does not sound even close to that magnificent, but I will say it was still a very fun car to drive nonetheless. I have this exact same model down to the color. I was curious to see how a black spoiler would look on it. I have an oettinger spoiler on the way. I love the car and it's really fun to drive. My only two complaints are the lack of storage and the climate screen times out after a few seconds. I really miss the driver side mini glove box on the previous generation. On a car this small, I would rather have all manual seats with two storage compartments under the seats. I did get a little shelf on for the phone compartment and 4 storage trays for all the doors. I would like to mention that I have had zero problems with the touch sensitive steering wheel. Great and thorugh review!

What color will your oettinger spoiler be? I like the look of that style. The new GTI really is super fun to huck around corners. I just really wish launch control was more dramatic! I definitely agree with you about having manual seats with storage underneath them too. Many times, I would rather have lighter weight, and more practicality on top of that rather than one simple luxury. And yes, the climate controls were obviously also not my favorite. However, Jeremy mentioned to me that he just sets it to auto and then doesn't touch it. He said the best way to use it is to touch it as little as possible! It's because most people either can't afford R or price per value just isn't there to justify purchase unlike Hyundai N models, so WV focus more on gti because it sells the most

I haven't put an aftermarket exhaust on a car in years. How is Massachusetts with inspection these days? I'm thinking the Clubsport muffler would probably pass without a problem.
@DoubleClutchAutoReviews9 ай бұрын
Mass has unfortunately cracked down heavily on inspections over the last few years. However, if it's a legit cat-back/axle-back from a reputable brand, I don't think it would have an issue passing. It's not like you're straight-piping up or anything like lolll. Best rule of thumb is to always keep the stock exhaust, just in case you have to bolt it back on to get a sticker. It's certainly annoying, but for some, being legal is worth the hassle. I used to know a guy who had a 700WHP MK5 Supra with full bolt-ons, E85 and upgraded turbos. This man paid his shop to have it COMPLETELY converted back to stock, de-tuned, and everything else necessary to pass inspection EVERY year. Then, have it put all back together to make 700 wheel again! Can you believe that?!? But hey, he didn't want an issue having a car like that without a legal sticker, and he could afford it. 🤷♂️ Best of luck with your exhaust endeavors though! Flooring it in first from a stop, loss of traction occurred because that was wheel hop you were feeling 😂 an upgraded transmission mount will fix this. You’ll likely get more wheelspin with more power but at least the wheel hop will be mitigated. Had similar situation on my Focus ST. FWD nature with all that torque!
@DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
So I think you are totally right regarding wheel hop/wheel spin, but I promise you what I felt in that specific pull wasn’t just loss of traction. The traction control definitely kicked in and cut power, I guarantee it. I really disagree with cars being made that claim they have a function that supposedly turns off traction control, but actually doesn’t. I say, let the driver do that at their own risk! If the automaker is not willing to allow that, then don’t even offer a traction control off button in the first place. That’s just my opinion. Regarding what you were saying though about FWD cars, that definitely does happen sometimes, especially if the tires aren’t up to par. A lot of FWD cars can be super fun, but wheel hop, understeer and torque steer are all just part of how they operate. My Honda Accord V6 6-speed has WICKED torque steer as well as understeer. You have to just be aware of it and be careful. Thanks for checking out my video though! If you enjoyed it, please make sure to leave me a like, and also consider subscribing to the channel! @@DoubleClutchAutoReviews I have an Audi S3 8Y granted it’s haldex (Quattro) but when launching it you need traction control off. Although this golf is FWD it’s probably the same. @DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
@@garethc78 So the crazy thing is we did have both traction control and stability control turned completely off according to what the GTI said on the drive mode screen. Yeah, that would be cool. It wasn’t so much the power, especially at the top end that was the biggest gripe to me. I felt like the power was relatively satisfactory, especially for it being rated at 241. Sure, 350 or 400 would’ve been amazing, but that is asking a lot for a stock one of these. It was the fact that it doesn’t let you fully turn traction control off and spin the tires if you wanted to. Especially under a full throttle launch, it cut power tremendously if it detected any wheel spin. It almost felt neutered in a sense for that reason. As far as a bigger turbo goes, i’m sure that would be great, but wouldn’t be my first fix. I would say to VW, if the driver wants to turn off traction control, let them turn off traction control. Don’t put a button there if it’s not going to mean anything. That’s just my two cents! Also, I very much hope you enjoyed the video nonetheless! I can respect that! For me, it’s really the climate controls, and some of the other buttons that really turned me off. Other than that though, I thought this was a great car. @@tiltedtoken1450 why is it better? "Better" is very subjective. If you look at just the numbers maybe but a car is more than it's numbers that's the whole principle of the GTI. @DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
After doing some quick research, the BMW 330i LCI has 255 HP and 295 TQ. It's 0-60 is around 5.6 secs in the RWD model, and 5.4 secs in the xDrive. I'd say it's probably very close to the GTI. A while ago, the GTI was rated for around 5 secs, but that definitely seems way off to me now that I have driven it. It's certainly more around the 5.6 to 6.2 range that it is rated for now, which I have found out after further research. It certainly didn't throw you back in your seat from a full throttle dig. I’d like to see drag race between the two! I’m sure it would be close. Also, if you enjoyed the review, please make sure to leave me a like, and also consider subscribing! If you can imagine me trying to do research for all of my review videos. Imagine trying to look up a simple fact of a 0-60 time, and you get 2 or 3 different answers. I believe the discrepancies come from people doing their own testing with different road conditions, weather, and even altitude settings. I understand how there can be differences, but it can be pretty frustrating nonetheless. I have found out that the best method of approach is to gather as much information as you can, sort out the “average” of all of the readings so to speak, and then actually drive the car myself, and then form my opinion and see if it all adds up based on all of those factors. I will tell you this, the GTI is definitely not in the low 5 sec range. As far as what fuel to use goes, always check your owners manual. That is going to be what the manufacturer recommends. And if your car isn’t designed to use higher octane fuel, I wouldn’t use it, because it’s just a waste of money at that point. Enjoy your new GLI man!

Great review - no nonsense and straight to the point(s). My opinion - the styling of the interior is too spartan and ugly. The touch screen everything is a PITA. My previous experience owning a 2008 Rabbit found all the door panel fabric and headliner glue failure 2 years into ownership was a major disappointment and makes all VW interior quality suspect. Would love to own one of these for the driving experience but most likely will not - especially at that price point.
@DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I really appreciate that. In my opinion, I feel like the interior was OK. I certainly liked the seats. Cupholders were cool too! I also really liked the RGB interior lighting. The dashboard/design was very boring though. What's funny is that the owner of this GTI, Jeremy, was adamant that this interior was leaps and bounds ahead of the Hyundai Elantra N. After sitting in an Elantra N at the Miami International Auto Show, I felt that they were practically on par with each other, if not the Hyundai being even better. I'd have to drive one and poke around it for a good bit to get a proper opinion comparing both of them though. As far as the touchscreen goes, yes I completely agree with you, and I also do not like it. There is no reason that climate controls should have to be integrated into the infotainment system. I hate that auto makers do that nowadays. I just want to turn a knob and be done with it. And that is absolutely absurd that the glue failed so quickly. Did you get that fixed under warranty? That is much too soon for the interior to start falling apart. Hopefully their build quality has significantly improved since then. If you want a great car to drive around this price point (or less), I would check out all of the GTI's competitors! Take a look at the Elantra N, the Civic SI, the even the WRX! Test driving them all, and then sitting down to compare all of the numbers, along with the pros and cons of each is the best way to figure out which car is right for you. Good luck! We will see how this one holds up for Jeremy! Hopefully it does well for him. Any modern car is always a HUGE question mark, mainly due to the vast amount of electronics, and all of the super complicated safety systems that go into them nowadays compared to older cars. Many would argue that they are damn near planned obsolescence now. Look at my Miata, for instance! Extremely well thought out car from top to bottom, but not over complicated with its build. Still running strong 34 years later! I feel like some of the older VW diesels are like that too. I’ve heard of some with manual transmissions that go over 250k miles as daily drivers, and still keep on chugging without much complaining at all. Definitely not the case for any new car! I think I lucked out in that I bought a 2013 rather than an earlier model. For example the 2012s and possibly years prior had timing-chain tensioner issues which could easily cause an engine failure if not addressed. By 2013 that issue was resolved. Additionally, the EA888 gen 1 engines had a mechanical cam follower, whereas the gen 2 engines (like I have) use a roller cam follower which doesn't wear out and cause engine damage. As we speak, I'm replacing my timing chain, the tensioner and guides. It's a big job, but at 213K miles and plans to keep the car, why wait for something to break? It's a preventative measure that is probably overdue. I'm a decent mechanic and I think that too helps as I've kept the car up without letting anything go ignored for too long.@@DoubleClutchAutoReviews

Launch control on these stock is pretty useless. I think they limit the torque off rip to save the clutches. I think once the TCU is unlocked and we can tune them with a stage 2 trans file we'll see much better use of the LC since they can increase the clamping force of the clutches with software. I'm pretty sure you can get better launches just hammering it off idle in sport mode.

Yes, exactly! Jeremy plans on getting his tuned eventually. Hopefully I can do a follow video once he gets it all done up! I would love to see this car actually be able to put down the power properly. It’s very interesting that it has to do with the transmission, specifically the clamping forces of the clutches more so than anything. Makes perfect sense though. As Jeremy said, the way that launch control works on a stock tune is pretty much just in a way to have less stress on the drivetrain. Pretty lame, but at least they are certainly tunable! However, that's what it's rated for! Do you have any other prior knowledge or experience that would go against using 87 octane in this car? I'm just genuinely curious. I also still hope you enjoyed my review video. If you did, please make sure to leave me a like, and also consider subscribing to the channel! It's free to you, and it really helps me out. I appreciate it! 😁 Take care, and have a good one! -Mark

Exactly, if VW states the engine is fine on 87, then it's fine on 87, they would never take a chance on a turbo charged car if they didn't design it for that octane level. However, on 87, if I heard detonation even once during acceleration, that would be the last fill-up with 87 octane as it will quickly shorten the lifespan of your rod bearings. I run 89 in my MK6 GTI with no issues. I ran 87 once, and it detonated under acceleration so I don't chance it. @@DoubleClutchAutoReviews

@@Fmandan77 I agree! We all can assume that the manufacture wouldn't (or at least REALLY shouldn't ) recommend something that the vehicle would respond well to. I was amazed to hear that though considering it is a modern German turbocharged car! However, like you said, if you ever heard or felt any sort of premature detonation or knocking, I would immediately put mid-grade or premium in it, and never run 87 octane again.

I believe additional knock protection is wasted $ unless the stock ecu advances timing to take advantage of it (power). Higher octane fuel might have more cleaning additives that might delay having to clean the intake valve carbon buildup. I plan to do seafoam treatments every 20-30k + seafoam injector cleaner in every 2nd or 3rd tank. Still I saw a video where a guy did just that + ran premium and still had significant carbon at 10k. Appears there's just no escaping it in GDI engines.

I’ve owned 3 GTI’s and although they’re great they are the most overpriced car in the world. In New York this car is pushing closer to $50k than $40k, which is beyond absurd. Might as well get an RS3 at that point.
@DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
Hmmm interesting. $40k for this exact model is clearly way too much when the autobahn has an MSRP of that. Is that purely just due to mark-ups? That really is despicable. And when you say New York, are you talking about NYC, or somewhere else? And you're definitely not getting a brand new RS3 for that price, but a used one maybe! I have actually done a review on a 2018 RS3, and I absolutely loved it. Feel free to check it out if you would like! kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3PFhJWJhs18Y5I Let me know your thoughts though. Good luck getting a new RS3 for 50k lol Every car nowadays is either marked up or had their MSRP increased compared to the previous gen
@DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
@@WitchYuki22 Yeah, exactly. A used one though, maybe! New ones start at $62k. You are right. Unfortunately, everything has become exceptionally more expensive compared to how things used to be, even just compared to us a few years ago. You know what hasn’t gone up though? Our wages! That’s just the world we live in. 🤷♂️ Hopefully things will even out eventually, right?

It’s a VW. The only value will be getting price break on overpriced parts for it. Can buy so much better
@DoubleClutchAutoReviews Жыл бұрын
What do you mean by that? Sure, of course you could always buy so much better. After all, it’s only a $35,000 car. Please feel free to explain what you mean in a sense when you compared to it’s rivals around the same price range.
