I'm an adult beginner, now 2 yrs. I've also tried several of these chin rests and a few shoulder rests. Your critiques are very helpful and indicate that you have similar cervical spine issues as I do (3-level fusion for me) so I also settled on the Wave 1 chin rest 1.25" ht. The seller makes them from African paduka wood. He lives in KY. To compare several he will send you 3 or 4 different styles/hts with clamps to try and he charges you for only 1. Pick one and send the others back. Great business model. I wasn't aware of the pivoting base for the KUN shoulder rest. I may have to try that. I have 2 Everests, collapsible and standard. I attached a soft gel heel cup to the lower chest end of the Everest (rubberbanded) so it doesn't slide (often dependent on the shirt fabric I'm wearing) so it elevates the the violin a bit more. I'm prone to stooping a bit and not keeping the instrument high enough to get a consistent intonation on the E string so a little extra lift is helpful. Your ideas fit my needs and your EE 2 instructional videos are really useful. I"m also trying a 15" viola (rental Eastman) and have become quite interested in pursuing this instrument. The more mellow sound via the C,G,D,A strings and viola structure is more pleasing to my ears. I like my Gliga Gama violin a lot but elected to use a Warchal E string along with its Wittner 4-tuner tailpiece and Obligato G,D,A strings. Gear reviews are always helpful and I do recognize that all of your preferences are based on your advanced level of play, your highly tuned ears, and your physical limitations, all of which are very personal. Thanks for all your help. Fortunately, my local instructor is perfectly ok with my "sampling" other teacher's techniques and suggestions. Ray

Super helpful, thank you! Would love a video that goes in-depth on chin rests: brands, how to put them on, what to look for, etc.

Thank you for doing this! I am an adult learner of the viola and can already feel myself picking up bad habits: gripping, raising my left shoulder, bending my neck. At 6’3” I think the 1.5 inch wave chin rest is the way to go. I might also take up yoga again to support good posture!

A very good video! Since seven weeks I started to learn violin. And found out that this is a very complicated matter with Shoulder rest and chin rest to find the best solutions. But I am working on it and try also different things. Greetings from Germany!

I bought the wave ii after watching your video. Then I traded for the wave I. I also tried the Wittner Augsburg. I like the Augsburg with the impressionist on top. The only thing I don't like about the wave I is that it pulls on my beard stumble if I haven't shaved for a few days. I also tried the performa shoulder rest. I didn't like it, but I do like the wolf secondo.

@@KavehSaidi Yes, Shar is great about letting you return things you do not like/want. And Wave was great about letting my try other chin rests also. I like the Wave i so much, I bought a second one for my other violin.

Great information. How do these taller chinrests fit into a violin case. Must you remove it each time? Thank you!

Since you have a Wittner chinrest, would you ever consider reviewing the whittner shoulder rest?

Congrats for the video, it's really helpful! Currently I am searching for the right chin rest for me. I have long neck and somewhat small face. It seems I tend towards the central chin rest but maybe this is only because I am used to. So I am wondering what are the advantages of central chin rest and advantages of lateral chin rest. Having long neck and small face which seems to be the best for me? Besides that I acquired the Kun shoulder rest and I am glad I did :) Although I would try to acquire the extra-long screw to gain more height. For the chin rest I bought the Gewa Vermeer and I like it but maybe I should have gone for one with more height as the Wave that you review in this video. It would be great if you can help me. Thanks!

@@KavehSaidi Thank you much not for just answering my question, but taking time to look it up, and then edit your response. I think I'll go for the Wolf Forte Primo, as it seems to have a symmetrical shape and ample surface, and also a foam, in case the Wolf ends up being too heavy. Thanks much!

Thank you, Mr. Saidi! Would you have chin rest & shoulder rest suggestions for a shorter person who is a beginner violinist, and who has also had a neck injury (C3, C4 & C5 fused)? I like the absence of a lip on the Wave, but it's obviously too tall for me. I went to a luthier and tried many chin rest styles and shoulder rests. Ended up buying a child's size chin rest, with no lip, and a wolf shoulder rest. For the few moments in the shop all felt fine, but after some practicing it's obvious that the new chin rest and shoulder rest are still not right. FYI: When I started violin about a month ago, the chin rest with no shoulder rest was fine. Once muscles built up and I was able to practice for longer periods, some real shoulder and neck discomfort started. So much so that I could no longer practice. Perhaps I just need to take my time and be less self conscious while at the luthiers! (?)
