After a few months I can say that these upgrades have had a much bigger impact that we antisicpated, we wish we'd done this much sooner. I hope it helps those of you building a campervan / motorhome / rv. ✌

Hey Ben & Alaska I hope you’re well. I recently ordered some stickers of boomerang for my own bus and got them in good time. Before I had Capito stickers but they wore thin. Any chance you might get more produced? I would love to buy some to have alongside boomerang?

We upgraded our set up with Starlink. Converted it to 12v and flat mounted it. If you buy it in South America like we did, it costs less than the UK/US market. We pay about $54 dollars a month for our service. As well as converting to 12v we shortened the wire, saving energy consumption. We did keep it though, so when parked in shade, we can still have our dish in clear line of the sky. Flat mounting it also means we can have it in use all of the time. Its sat nicely out of sight on our kombi's roof rack 👍 Obviously not for everyone, but would definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about their own South American adventure 👍

@@KombiLife no worries. Starlink works for us, but we are benefiting from a much reduced monthly payment plan. If we still lived in the UK, we'd probably just utilise the 5g networks and tether like we used to. Looking forward to seeing your travels next year 👍

I upgraded to starlink a while ago, im quite happy. I used to have an all-over-europe simcard, which gave 300gb a month for like 60 bucks, in all EU countries + switserland and scandinavia. I however use that amount relatively often. So nowadays I have starlink for unlimited internet, and my personal, company and partners phone each with 30-50gb a month of data, so even when we park in the trees every now and then we still get good internet.
@Okkebeltman Жыл бұрын
does help that I have enough powerbudget and space for the starlink
@KombiLife Жыл бұрын
Wow you guys use loads of data, 😅 that's a pretty good option to have both services. Do you find the satellite coverage dictates where you park? For eg, staying away from trees etc?
@Okkebeltman Жыл бұрын
@@KombiLife A lot of the data is watching youtube all the time :P For locations, a little bit but not that much. Because of solar I already prefer parking where there is some sun, and with the starlink you get a 25m cable, so you have quite some freedom where to place the dish. In the more terrible location i have a place on the roof where I put the dish and it will go straight up in the air instead of at an angle, lowering the chances of pointing at a tree.

We have never had an issue with a combo between having our phones with our normal sim (which gives us 50% of our data plan each) .. this also allows us to tether .. again never really had an issue with battery etc … and then we also took on board a 3 month e-sim plan with unlimited data .. was amazing all the way thorough the Nordics and Baltics ….

just a note for starlink - you can mount it not the roof by chopping the leg off and it does just work in motion. chopping the leg off and mounting made no difference at all to performance. We've used ours all over Europe, we just have the basic purchased in the UK. Doesn't charge us any extra to use it in motion.
@KombiLife Жыл бұрын
that's good to know - We were told it was against their terms of service and we would be disconnected. If it's working for you though, nice one! 👍

I'm not sure how internet works in Europe, but how does your teltonica (spelling?) Work when crossing borders? I jump between Canada, US and Bahamas regularly, and starlink appeals to me because it can handle that constant changing of zones. But I'm open to a lower power alternative
@KombiLife Жыл бұрын
It works great when crossing borders as long as the SIM card has a relevant roaming agreement with the destination. The Teltonika is also very small which is handy and uses very little power.
@MNeilGri Жыл бұрын
@@KombiLife thats too bad. North amerjcan data plans don't do well crossi g borders, and phone plans with data ether dont tend to have enough data, or limit hotspotting internationally.
@jormoria Жыл бұрын
will the teltonika will work in the americas? english america and spanish amerika
@KombiLife Жыл бұрын
Yes, just need a SIM card with appropriate coverage / roaming deals for the countries you are visiting. Having 2 sim slots makes this much easier.

Can't say your tether complaints make sense to me, I use a sub 200 euro Android and never have problems keeping me and my wife connected (she rarely switches her sim). I remember I used to have battery issues on some older phones, but my latest phone must have a better modem or something, because it barely uses more then normal use and I can use it all day.

But some amazing advice and notes for remote internet access! Wish you full bars wherever you go!
@KombiLife Жыл бұрын
interesting, thanks for sharing that feedback. Do you not find the connection is disconnected if it's idle for a period of time? I must admit I mostly have tethered with an iPhone.
@respectfulplayer Жыл бұрын
There's a feature to turn it off if no device is connected, but as long as a device is connected even if it's not being used, the connection doesn't drop. We often forget to turn it off when walking around a city and it'll stay on as long as we don't lose each other 😂

I think you are misleading your viewers by saying that tethers often disconnects and causes phone to overheat. I have an older Samsung and I've never had tether disconnect nor does my phone run hot. I'm not saying that it's not something that can happen, but sounds like a TV commercial though. It's oblivious you are trying to sell a product. I suggest that your viewers would be better served to spend their money on a cell booster instead.
@KombiLife Жыл бұрын
It’s good to hear you haven’t had these issues. We certainly have, but then with two people working full time online, and often with uploads and downloads in 35C + temps, our use case might be different. From what I can tell this disconnect thing might be more prevalent with iPhones. Just so you know we don’t get any money if someone purchases the internet gear we’ve installed, we weren’t paid to say good things and these are our honest opinions. The discount codes are provided as a help for the viewers, no kick back to us.
