Concerning rolling out the hay, we found that moving the paddock fence to the edge of the rolled out hay allows for near zero contamination. Too close to fence to poop on it or sleep in it. The cows line up to it like it's a feed trough. The nice "additional" benefit is the concentrated line of manure that appears afterward!

I helped a friend with building roads in Upstate NY. We cut trees and brush out, graded in the late fall. Then we seeded the roads and spread hay. Even with cold weather the seed germinated. I would try an area with cover crops to try to get the soil healthy again ! Good Luck !

Good work. Good plan. Don't be too aggressive with pH adjustment.

New sub! I purchased a small farm in CRP almost like your leased land. Timber and 3 areas usable w/all bad fence. One area has small trees growing in it and will need a saw. CRP is over in 2 years and I would like to start amending/preparing the soil now or asap. 2 areas were row crop previously. Looking forward to watching more on this.

Can't wait for this series of videos. I just drilled in pasture mix in 8 acres in central va that's been crop farmed for 30 years. My grandfather used to run cows on it before than. Great content keep it coming!!!

Unrolling hay is a great option where you can. I just took back a small partial of my tillable ground and will be fencing it off. I would suggest no till seeding some cereal, rye (Green Cover Seed) as soon as you can. It is a very cold hearty seed and will survive even if you plant it now and germinate down to 38° which you probably know this. I planted a small 3 acre patch on November 24 and have another 4 acres still yet to go. You can graze it off in the spring and at the same time while the cows are grazing spread some clover seed and whatever mix you want to put in, let the cows trample that in while they’re grazing. You could also bale it if you can’t graze it. It has great benefits to help your soil biology deep roots. Great content keep it coming. I’ve considered videoing my progress, but not quite set up to do that yet. I too am a firm believer in Jesus Christ and trust him for all things. I thank him every day when I can walk across the field and see the grass growing.

This is great. Im most interested in the Judy option. Also want to learn about hard perimeter fencing. No special requests.

Check Gabe Brown. Till or no-till, organic non-organic... makes no difference. The most important thing is diversity. I don't remember correctly, but I think at minimum 25 spices is what makes all the difference in water retention, drought resistance and so on...

What about pigs? Then follow with, broadcast cover crop a day before you pull the pigs, then you can graze the cows on, cover crop mixes, probably do better then grasses after chemicals. And could start to add legumes and grasses to the mix over time, and also could roll out hay. Jordan Green, does this, but is generally in a wood lot. Im hoping to try this on some land im getting next year. Just a suggestion.

“That’s going to take time and money.” That’s the challenge, to use as little time and money and still get a quality product. It will be interesting to see how you do it.

I would put all the money and labor into fencing and water. Roll the hay, throw out some seed at the same time- put extra hay on bare spots. There should already be some soil biology and it gets upset when you deep til.

Thats about what im starting with, I would feel safe assuming that the majority of people watching will start with field like this and not 30 year old "greg judy" level pasture. Great video idea, i hope myself and others get a lot of valuable information.

I cleared my fence line with my 2 head. I suggest trying to graze or stock pile that area you think you need to bale and set up 3 strand electric and run that for the stockpile pasture

Follow the cows with chickens ...more nutrients for the soil plus the chickens will help spread the cow manure and help with fly control

I'm very curious. I've been doing a lot of brush clearing. My property was being taken over by osage orange. My pastures won't be pretty but hopefully can start to rejuvenate them.

Osage Orange, I bet there are deer nearby

I’m not big on tilling. Ditto with chemical fertilizer. It seems these will set back the biological process in the soil. I would definitely consider density stocking and hay bombing. Congratulations on your addition! All the best!

You can't watch a change, if you don't measure it. Looking at field is not enough, you need to take measurements

Agree, we are taking soil samples and running the data. Along with 1ft soil blocks that we will photo.

Hahaha look at Colorado prices if you think that's high.
@jwmcginnis2 күн бұрын
I get it, prices are reasonable here but high enough it’s hard to make a solid profit with cattle.

Irrigated land in my area is going for 20k an acre. Huge cattle area, but owned by old farmers who've had the land for a century.
@hitman14213 күн бұрын
Not magically. Make sure the cattle aren't on one spot more than 3 times in a year for no more than 3 days at one time. Atkeast 60 days rest between.
