At 2:41 you say "once you have it plugged in" but at the end of the video you actually plug it in last, after hooking the clamps, which is correct. But some people may be confused as to when to plug the charger in/ before hooking or after...... otherwise good work.

But this morning I was all alone and needed to get my son to the bus stop. I had a charger but no idea how to hook it up! I know I've seen people jump off cars a hundred times but never paid any attention! Knew it couldn't be too difficult but didn't want to make a fatal mistake. This video was a lifesaver! I have an older type charger with an analog meter. If I understand correctly, when a dead battery is first hooked up to the charger the meter will deflect fairly high on the scale. The battery will charge over a few hours and the meter will deflect less and less. After 8-10 hours it may not get to zero but it will be charged enough to run the car or other device where it's used. Meter deflection is seldom talked about in the videos I reviewed this morning. Hope this helped someone.

You left out an important safety precaution. This is a conventional battery. There are two rectangular plastic covers (danger/poison) on the top of the battery that cover the battery cells. Before charging, these covers should be pried up so that any gases that may build up during the charging process can vent out of the holes.

@Cdray244 жыл бұрын
it can take approximately 24 hours to fully charge a dead battery, THe most I had to charge a battery was some time into the second day. so no more than 48 hours. This type of charger automatically stops charging and goes to maintenance, which maintains the charge it just charged. This is great for vehicles you don't use that often. Saving your alternator or highs cost on replacing alternators if you use your alternator to charge your dead battery after you get a jump start. THis is not recommended but in an emergency can be done to get you from one place to either home or to the shop or store to buy a new battery. Make sure they check your new battery so you don't have the so you don't have the same problem within a couple of days. Turn off all lights and heat/or air conditioner and radios etc. while charging your battery as you drive around on the highway for at least 30 minutes. GO to a place where it is safe and where you can re-jump or recharge your battery if it doesn't restart. THen turn off your vehicle and turn it back on and see if it will start. If not then something else is wrong. Yes, you can drive the vehicle but you need to solve the reason why your battery keeps dying. something is draining it. or the ignition is not working or it needs a new starter or there is a clog in the fuel system. Have a mechanic check this for you. Plus check the alternator to make sure it is still at full functioning. You don't want to charge your battery using your alternator more than two times in a short period of time. It is cheaper to buy a battery charger and trickle charge it and leave that plugged in when you are not driving your vehicle. You can buy one for less than $30 at any auto part store or online.

you are wrong Geoff: the disclaimer is for charging the battery under 15 V, which is a tad higher then the 14.2-14.4 that is considered acceptable; so hydrogen will be generated which is explosive; fast charging, yeah. I have a similar unit which is not mentioning the voltage (otherwise I would not have made the purchase) but snake oil like "intelligent charging", " microcontroller charger".... measure the voltage for charging one uncharged battery then measure the voltage of end of charging process (once the battery is charged): if the voltage does not change it is not intelligent it is no microcontrolled charging. If the battery is in the car unhook the ground first in American automobiles. Reason being if you are using a wrench to unhook the positive first you could hit a piece of metal and cause a short between the car frame and positive cable in which could lead to serious damage and personal injury. If you unhook the ground first when removing the battery than there will be no short and you can remove safely. Then you can remove the positive cable. And you install in reverse. Positive first then ground. Batteries can explode and do produce a hydrogen gas when charging, so it is best practice to charge outside in a safe secluded open area. As for this charger some say hook the black up first and some say hook the red up first. I always say this is how I do things and i made this video for informational purposes and you should always follow whatever the manufacturer instructions say. Do I need to drive the car right away -- after it says the battery is at 100 percent charge? Or just start it up and see that it fully turns over? Should I idle it a while? Or once it's at full charge, do I just expect it will drive if I wait until the next day? (I am charging my battery as I type this). It was a drain because I left the lights on. I am using the slow charge, so it will be a deeper charge. It actually turned over this morning, so I know the battery is okay (not needing replaced), because the person helping me said once I turn off what drained it, it might start up. Anyway, I'm just wondering, do I also need to drive it right away once it says it's fully charged?

I basically had the same problem with my battery. Last month when I was on my way to the store, my car died so I got my multimeter out and I checked the voltage on the battery and it was 9.7378 Volts so I thought “what the heck is going on with this battery”, the next thing I knew I seen some smoke coming from the tips of the battery terminals. I was suspicious on what was going on and I couldn't believe it because this battery was only barely 16 years old which I consider fairly new in today's society, so basically what I want to do is try to clean up the battery with some soap and salt solution and then I might put it on the charger for two or three minutes at a high current rate just to see if it will hold a charge. I'm not sure if that's going to help the battery or not but one thing's for certain before I go out and buy a new battery, I'm definitely going to try these two methods that I suggested. Now on the other hand I could swap the battery out with one from my 1962 Chevy Tahoe but I'm not sure that my old lady would let me do that, so basically what I need to do is first, I'm going to check all the air in the tires before I monkey around with the battery. Then I'm probably going to run a few errands around town down and the next thing I want to do is get some paint and paint the battery terminals because I don't think they look very good without the neon yellow color look on them. If all goes well, I am planning to do a few other things to the terminals. Next after that chore, is get some of that distilled water and pour on the outside of the battery to try to clean up a lot of the dirt and dust its accumulated over all these years. If I have time what I'll do after that it's try to clean both sides of the mirrors on my 1965 Ford Bronco because I've noticed while I was driving that it's hard to see what kind of traffic is coming up behind me. I was having a problem with the battery when I put the headlights on low beam and then when I tried to switch the high-beam I noticed that the voltage excursions were jumping around so I went out and I bought another set of test leads to use on my digital multimeter and there was no difference at all, so I think I may borrow my friend Tony Jones's multimeter just to check those voltage excursions to see if that is normal. Nobody really explained to me how to test a DC voltage excursions when the battery is not in its prime. I am all on my own doing this. A lot of people have contacting me and they said that they've had that problem once or twice and maybe even three times in their lifetime with their batteries but they did something totally different. What they did was loosen the terminals first then they carefully remove the battery and hoisted it out to get rid of all the debris and dirt that's accumulated after all these years then they put it on a slow charge which I believe they told me was 32 milliamps for 6 days, 3 hours and 54 seconds. Next they took the battery caps off and added some distilled water, which they claimed that they bought it at their local Walmart store. I think, if I can remember correctly, they said it was .99 cents plus the sales tax. Can you believe that just 99cents? That's a real good price for one full gallon of distilled water. Speaking of water, yesterday I helped my neighbor that lives to the right side of my house, fill their swimming pool for the new season. It literally took 7 hours to fill. I am not sure how many gallons it is. I have met people in my lifetime that had no idea that there were 4 quarts of water in a gallon jug. They just assumed it was a gallon only. I am not really good at math but I do have a calculator on my cell phone. Speaking of math, it takes me back to grade 11 in high school when my teacher, Mr. Lowry gave us a sneak quiz on algebra. I failed it because I didn't understand what that was all about. I spent most of my high school time stoned and kind of out of it. Some of my classmates were very good at math, and it even showed when they got their report cards. I may have gotten of the path of whatever we were initially talking about. I think it had something to do with blue cheese. No, I remember now, it was car batteries. I never could figure out why they put car batteries in the front of the vehicle and not inside the vehicle. It would be so much easier to work on them, especially in the rain, if they were inside the vehicle. Doesn't that make more sense to you too? Well anyhow, batteries are pretty heavy for their size and some people can't lift them very good. I had a fried, Tony Smith who had asthma and once he tried to lift out his car battery, and sneezed, and the battery fell out of his hands and landed on his right baby toe. It broke the small bones in that toe of his. I called his mothers step daughter Ann but she was not home. So I then called his brothers uncle Fred and told him about what just happened to Tony's toe. He seamed like he was drunk and started laughing at me and said “I don't care about that Bast#rds toe”. I got mad and hung up on him immediately. From that day on, I never spoke to Tony's brother's uncle Fred. I never really liked him in the first place because when Tony and I were 13 years old, we were at a softball game and Fred walked over to us and farted right in our faces. That was not very nice of that old pervert. I heard some stories about him when he was about 20 years old that would make you cringe if you heard them, but I can't get into that right now because I have to finish up my posting here on you tube. I hope I have given you folks some good advice on having some of your problems solved in a timely manner. I like to help out when I can if it is at all possible. I am out for 3 more hours so I want to go now and get a hot dog and a bottle of grape soda. I need to look around for a ride so I can get back to my padded room at the Sinclair Insane Asylum. I hope Dr. Dilbert will not be mad at me for sneaking out....

Most people will throw out old batteries unknowing they can be recovered to their initial splendor? Batteries are not low-cost! Prior to tossing out any kind of battery you need to test them to see if they could be brought back. Not just will it conserve you money but it is additionally eco-friendly. Batteries contain chemicals that leak right into our dirt and also end up in our waterways. By replacing batteries we will certainly get rid of 50% of the batteries we throw out.

3 to 6 hours chargiing of a fully dead car battery at 2A aint going to do anything for a dead battery. I leave them on, overnight, when charging at 2A but i use only automatic chargers and they cut down the charge rate to about 25% of their normal charge rate after a battery is fully charged. You are right about one thing - if a battery dumps you on the side of the road two times - dump it at your nearest parts house. I only use Schumacher chargers, primarily the 1.5 to 2A versions, even though I have larger chargers.
@stgeorge69477 жыл бұрын
John Clarke it's more likely the cars alternator isn't charging the battery while you drive. It's possible the battery's faulty but I doubt it if you've been using it..

Why 2amp? Why not 30/150 amp? Sorry this is all new to me
@1Corinthians2.24 жыл бұрын
2amp gives it a deeper charge and is also safer Going higher (which is also faster) can result in a fritzed battery. Since I was off work, I chose slow charge, but you can use 12amp if you need to drive it sooner. The person helping me put the charger on about 9:30 this morning, and it still is not at full charge at 9:00 this evening. I am using an older charger where you wait until the needle goes down to 0. I assume I might have enough charge now for it to run okay, but I was told to take it off the charge once it reached 0, so I am just waiting..... Hopefully, it will not be too late before it's done. It is taking it's own sweet time.
@rkgsd5 жыл бұрын
If you're trying to completely charge a battery at a 2 amp rate, it will take 3 times longer than the 3 to 6 hours mentioned. If you just want to charge it enough to crank, then yes.
@handymanPF5 жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct to an extent. It all depends how low the battery is. If you have a clicking of the starter and the lights go dim , then most likely you have 3 - 6 hours. But if it’s significantly lower then that it would take longer. I use 3 - 6 hours as a reference point. But this video is an older video and now you can get automatic chargers and you just have to wait to the light turns green . amzn.to/2GT9drK Thanks for watching and commenting

How old is too old to charge a dead battery? We had a battery in our last car that was only a year old, so my husband kept it when we got rid of the car. Now my battery is dying, we've had to charge it 3 times in the last 4 days. He tried to put the "new/old" battery in my car but its completely dead. Could we charge that battery?
@handymanPF8 жыл бұрын
+Monica H interesting question. In my experience, usually when a battery goes completely dead, it becomes worthless. But I had 1 or 2 brought back to charge. If everything thing looks good visually, you can put it on an automatic trickle charge and then check the condition of the battery with a battery load tester. Good luck and be safe. This may seem logical to dudes & most chicks but batteries & electricity scare me; When i take the battery out of the car which terminal do I take off the car first? Then after its charged which terminal do I take off first or can I take off any when I turn the mains off? then which terminal do I put on first going back in the car?
@handymanPF8 жыл бұрын
+AdCurves what I do when I REMOVE the battery is I disconnect the negative first and when I connect the battery, I put the negative on last. Reason being is because if I'm using a wrench and I pull the pos. Off worst and hit the frame or something else, I'll have a nice arcing effect going which could possibly lead to a battery explosion. Now when I remove the negative first, I can take a wrench on the neg. post and sit it on the frame all day long and have no problems. When I remove the negative first, then the circuit is not completed. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching and commenting. Please like, share, and subscribe.
@444rand8 жыл бұрын
Either terminal first, it doesn't matter. Just don't connect the terminals when working. Completing the circuit is what will give you a shock so handle them separately.

this will not work with the newer chargers with the accidental backward hookup. with a completely dead batter it will never give out any charge. you must tether it with a battery with voltage first then charge the ALMOST dead battery
@handymanPF8 жыл бұрын
+Michael Martinez you must be referring to a float charger which maintains battery voltage and does not charge. No, I m say to use a battery charger at low amperage and charge it slower for a stronger and longer charge. Then you can use the charger your talking about. Thanks for watching and commenting. So my question is if it's only good for two charges you going to wind up having to buy battery anyway so why buy a battery charger when you could have used that money to put down on a brand new battery life expectancy of a battery is 4 to 5 years
@handymanPF3 жыл бұрын
Don’t let your battery go completely dead or near completely dead and you will be fine. It also helps if you had a vehicle sitting for a long time and battery lost some juice and needs a little help. It’s also good for people that own more then one vehicle. Plus battery chargers are not as expensive as they were.

@@handymanPF can you just disconnect the battery and will it continue to hold a charge if it at 12 volts before you disconnect it?
