I have tried your method of tray rotation and harvesting recently...it works ! I don't have the patience to wait for 2 months , and still got a good harvest of 2- 32 oz containers of finely sifted castings after only a month between rotations. Also, I fluffed the top tray for about 2 hrs and the worms all went down to the tray below...really didn't expect that all would. Thanks for all your tips!

I find these really interesting and helpful. I have just set up a 4 tray system and felt a lot more confident. I have opted to have a single tray to begin with and will add bedding in the 2 below to inoculate. The sifter is an amazing idea too! Thank you for helping newbies like myself. I haven't got to mine either 😕 I fed them last around July.......I've been so busy 😩 that I forgot to check on them they can travel to a recycling bin under them that is probably done as well...... I've kept the bottom part off so they can move through out the recycling bin at their leisure.......they are on the top lucky enough that the vermi hut fits perfectly on top but still.......

My Tiny Worm bin has been ignored the longest because we are procrastinating about counting the worms out when we harvest (a silly tradition I started when I got it). Great channel. What is the advantage of doing this rotation vs the more traditional method where you havest the bottom tray?

Thank you!! Great question! In the traditional method I found that I had liquid and worms down in the basin almost every time I checked on it. I also had to prep and dampen the bedding every time I put a new tray on and the harvested castings were like mud with how much liquid was in them. With this method, I can be much lazier by just filling a new tray with dry bedding. I rarely if ever have liquid or worms down in the basin (mostly when I go past 90 days between rotations) The bedding is totally inoculated with microbes and moist when I rotate it up to be a new top feeding tray and the worms infiltrate it much quicker all making for a quicker turn around with harvesting! Thinking ahead, if I wanted to use the 5th tray, would you just add a pre-pre harvest tray? So from top to bottom it would go 1. Feeding, 2. Pre pre harvest 3 pre harvest 4. Old inoculating 5. New inoculating? I don't need a sifter so I'm thinking to use all 5 trays, would love to hear your thoughts on how to add to rotation

@@MonzGary That is an excellent route to go if you want even more broken down castings and a bigger worm population, but the castings maybe wetter than usual...If you go an extra inoculating tray instead then you will have a slightly smaller worm population and a little drier finished castings. I think with your idea you may be able to get the rotation down to a 45 days cycle as well...which, when you eventually get all 5 trays on turns into a conveyor belt of castings!! Great idea!!

When starting a brand new worm tower, do you start an inoculating tray right away?

Great question!! Yes you can, in fact that is how we started my son's VermiHut. We actually didn't do the first rotation until 90 days, but we started adding one inoculating tray each rotation. We didn't harvest until the 2nd rotation. I hope this helps!! I'm curious, what type of cardboard do you use? I started to shred cardboard boxes then was concerned about the glue that is used in their manufacturing; thinking that it would damage or kill the worms. Thanks.

Great question! Mostly I use amazon boxes or boxes from the grocery store. I steer away from glossy cereal box type cardboard...they will eventually eat it, but it takes forever. I have been feeding them to my worms for years with no issues, in fact it is the bedding that gets broken down the fastest of everything I've tried & it helps me divert some trash from my landfill. Worms do tend to be a "sink" for toxins, they have been used to clean polluted soils, so as long as we don't eat them (like birds do) they and we should be good! I hope this helps!! I know this was sort of an atypical timeframe for your tower, but remind me of how often you are able to typically harvest a tray? I'm looking towards an expansion in my near future, and taking notes for when that time comes. I'm leaning towards the UWB, but feel like I shouldn't rule anything out just yet! I typically harvest every 60 days...once you get 4 trays on the system, it becomes almost like a conveyor belt of castings as ! harvest every 60 days! I think anywhere between 45-60 days is the sweet spot. What is my favorite......That is a great question and the toughest for me to answer!! It sounds like you are already an experienced worm farmer so an Urban Worm Bag might be the most fun as you seriously up the amount of food and bedding you can feed and I find that it is really easy to just chuck stuff in throughout the week! I love my VermiHut because it comes with everything you need to get started (except for the worms) to include a block of coco coir and each tray can also be used as a sifter...Mine came with 5 trays and I run it with 4. It is an excellent bin for beginners as it starts up real easy and drains if there is too much moisture (which is common in beginner bins). My Tiny Worm bin is a bit more challenging but I love the convenience of size, where it can be put anywhere! And my Outdoor Worm Bin made of two 20 gallon fabric pots is a work horse for me, producing enough castings to harvest every week...so which one is my favorite??!!? I love each of my children equally, but right now I'm having the most fun with the Urban Worm Bag!! But, my VermiHut and the others are a close second!!! Way to dry , the bedding should of been wetted down same as any other tray , and the food tray wetted down a bit as well , worms love moisture but not to much that they have to swim in it is all .

You're right, a tray full of dry bedding is not a good idea at all for worms! It is amazing how wet my dry bedding eventually becomes as it waits down below catching all the moisture! The castings at the end come out perfect and the worms go into the dry trays on their own when they find it wet enough. The tray that became the new top feeding tray started as a totally dry tray and was never fed or watered...and it was absolutely moist!! This method is just a different way to efficiently run the VermiHut with the least amount of work while preventing anaerobic leachate in the bottom. Lots of other great ways to run it as well...I've tried them all...to include running water through it to use what comes out the bottom to every way in between. This one is my favorite!! @@Vermicompost ….cheers mate , if it’s working for you then your doing it right for how you work your worm bins / trays , just on the appearance of the video yeah it looked over dry from the viewing, I only water mine on inspection and if they need it otherwise I leave them alone , I feed scraps to but make sure I cover them so not to attract unwanted pests , the amount of worm castings I have got is incredible only because I harvest 6 monthly to a year and the fact I have a few worm farms , the eggs get put into other trays and make me more worm farms , it’s addictive. 👍I don’t call them cocoons because they don’t morph like butterfly’s do from cocoons , the worms are born from the eggs , that’s just how I relate to what everyone else calls cocoons .

I've just restarted my worm bin using your suggestions. Putting dry bedding in the bottom tray is genius! Previously my worms all seemed to end up, drowned in the liquid tray. I'm astounded at how quickly the population has grown - so many little babies! And I think I've come across the idea to freeze food before, but this summer I'm not thawing it prior to adding it. I figure adding frozen food is a good way to cool down the bin. it's in the garage and it's so hot in the summer🥵. Thanks so much for sharing this technique.

If I want to use all five trays at the same time, where would you suggest I put the fifth tray? All the way on the bottom and just have a third inoculating tray?

I think that is a great idea, you could also have a harvest tray resting on top as the fifth tray without the lid to let it dry. I think you could do a 45 day interval per tray if you fed every 6-7 days and run it as a 5 tray system. Please let me know what you come up with and are able to make work as time goes on...I'm real interested to see how folks like running it with 5 trays. I like to use my fifth tray as a sifter for my other worm bins so I may be stuck with a 4 tray system...if I don't order another VermiHut! Thanks so much for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

We did well, we're quite a bit inland and didn't suffer the storm surge into the rivers and coast that a lot of the Tampa area and especially more northern Florida did. I think the holes are square to fit more of them in while still keeping the bottom strong. They are perfect for sifting...which I didn't realize until about 6 months after I started running it and almost bought a sifter😀 I'll check out your next worm Cafe' video to see if the hole design is similar! I did toss in some watermelon and lettuce when I got back form the wedding to hold them over but they devoured that down to castings in no time. Thanks again, after seeing your video of them cleaning up the egg shells I put quite a lot in mine over the food, there's none left after about a week when I go back to feed them again, my worm tower is outside, I gather whatever is in the sump after it rains and use it on my house plants, its rocket fuel.

Thanks for detailed explanation of your tray management, very helpful. I inherited a Worm Factory system recently, so far only have 1 tray going. I will add a bottom tray with bedding as Inoculating tray. Since a few months back I make and use "Pre-composted bedding" (based on RockinWorms recipe), so need to keep an eye on the Inoculation tray, don't want it to get too wet from drip above. Maybe I will add 1/2 " of dry cardboard on top of pre-composted bedding to absorb drip as a precaution. Your method of "stir and let the worms walk out the bottom" from a ready-to harvest tray is brilliant. I will adopt this method when harvesting my regular tub-bins for sure! A real time-saver to let the worms transfer themselves, instead of picking them out by hand .... Thanks! Malin

So I was gifted between 1500-2500 red wigglers from a fellow beekeeper. Yeah that sounds weird :) We have begun raised garden beds utilizing Hugulkultur methodology. So it only makes sense that we raise our own composting worms. :) I went with the Vermihut and I find your videos to be awesome. Clearly presented and very easy to understand. Happy Labor Day weekend! Did I catch your comment correctly, that you are starting a new worm bin soon? Looking forward to it and the mystery. I have so many castings now to deal with, its crazy. For the Fall, I will be restarting a Vermihut in the greenhouse with about 5000 worms and see how they do in there when the cooler temps arrive. Mainly to keep them going just in case I lose them in the big outdoor bins. But I think they will be fine outside.

@@Vermicompost i exaggerate a little bit as still need a lot more castings, as much as I can get! But the separating of the worms in the amounts I am getting now keeps me busy! So, I changed how I do it. I harvest these big outdoor composters with half inch sifter, putting the most composted stuff and worms into some big totes. Then bating those worms out to put them back to work! I would love to find an easier way on this scale but have not found it. I figure by next year there will be even more worms so will not be treating them so preciously 🙂🪱🪱🪱🪱

That is a great way to do it with the big systems you have...make the worms do the work!! I love the surprises I get when I use bait cups and find loads of worms in them!! But like you said, there is no easy way to get the worms out in mass at that scale and have even a hope of getting 90% of them out! Sounds like you have a vermicompost factory over there!!

Thank you Tory!! I haven't purposely tried avocado tech yet...I had to look it up, but I will say I get tons of worms congregating in the tight dark confines of the avocado shells I put in...so much so that I call them Avocados!! If I let one go bad again I will blend up the contents with some of my amendments, put it on top and see what I get!! Thank you Ann!! You are probably right! I think they may have been attracted to that, but then got trapped down there as well...it was bone dry!! I was surprised to see the springtails since I haven't seen them in this bin in years, but the population may be so low that I just don't see them on my regular feedings.
