Today I show how to use 3D Design Pro for creating shapes on NON Segmented turnings.
Can be used for more than segments. Even a standard bowl blank.
I will be doing more advanced use of the software in the weeks coming..
UPDATE on my ankle
It has been 9 days since the surgery and I am feeling much better.
Still not allowed to put weight on the foot. But that will be weeks no matter how I feel.

Thanks Gary. This couldn't have come at a better time. I just purchased the SegmentedPro package a few days ago and have been playing with the software. It's not too hard for an ol' geezer such as me, but... I do wish there was a way to enlarge the left and right tool pads. My eye sight isn't the best and it's hard for me to see well. Outside of that, I'm enjoying playing with it. Thanks again for the timely video. Keep them coming. BTW, I feel your pain on the ankle. I fell in the shop and broke my ankle, tore the MCL tenon, and fractured my knee all at the same time in a fall. I slipped on a thin piece of scrap wood. Not fun. Had to wait for the wife to get home to take me to the orthopedic surgeon. Thankfully he's a friend and fellow woodworker. Take care of that ankle and in the meanwhile, keep the software videos coming.

Thank you Steve. I understand what you mean about the menu icons. Because I am sitting sideway to the screen it pushes me back farther. Well it sounds like we did about the same thing. They did not have to do anything with the fracture on the bone to the knee. Sounds like you healed all up and thanks for your concerns on my injury. Gary

Hang in there Gary. I cannot say I've been there but my son-in-law recently had foot surgery and got pretty much the same instruction from his surgeon. Be patient and use your wheels. As to woodturner pro, I have been a user for about 20 years (more?) and don't know how I could get along without it. I have the whole suite and love it all. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2024 and stay safe.🙂🙂

Interesting to see the software you are using. One of the things I've done for blanks I don't want to mess up is to model the bowl in 3D design software and when I think I have a shape I like, output it as an STL file and 3D print a scaled version. I will do several design iterations and then select the one I like the most out of the candidates. Looking forward to more videos like this. It's always interesting to see the tools others use. Continued prayers for rapid recovery. Glad you are feeling better.

Thank you Mark and I have used my CAD program to make solid models as well for shapes. But even though I can I have not 3D printed any. A number of the ones I have made solid models for have been multi axis turnings. Slow but surly feeling better. Although that will not help the time frame for standing on the bad foot. See you Friday for a follow up on this video. Then off to make some cool lathe parts using TinkerCad for the following week. Thanks for the prayers, Gary

Hi Gary those software' packages look interesting. It would be good to see more. I started making a bowl from a board jig today. I have made a custom parting tool using a parting blade from a metal lathe. It is a little less than 1/2" high, so it may not work too well as you said that your blade is around 1/4". I could modify it if I have issues with it. The next step is to make your tool post jig. I will let you know when it is finished and I will make references to your videos (as the original idea for the tool) of course. Hope you get well soon and back to turning.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 9 ай бұрын
Thank you very much. Depending on the width of the parting tool it may work ok. Also the smaller the radius you cut the more it wants to bind. You could always taper it down from the tip back around 1", I will be looking for your video when you get it posted. Matter of fact I just commented on your Walker Turner drill press and subscribed. Just wanted to tell you that I really appreciate your earlier tutorials on Woodturner Pro,,, and found them by far the best on KZbin. This software is much easier to use for wood turning than my old software, which I will not name here. It uses the spline feature but I had to make my own segments or blanks. I managed to design a couple of bowls, both from a blank and also segments. It required much more time and thinking. My head id beginning to hurt just remembering how I did it. One time I had to turn a fan to clear all the smoke that was coming from my ears. ;-D I'll look into this software to see if it makes sense for my situation. Please show us more of what can be done with this software. Very interesting. Take care and get well soon.

Thank you Gil, Many years ago when I did my first segmented turning(for wood patterns) I used dividers or trams to layout the shape. Then drew lines which could be for 1-2 inch thick segments. Used the profile to figure out segment length. Most were 6 segments per ring(the radius was the segment length. Any software should have been easier than doing that. I did try another program prior to this but it was not nearly as good. Thanks for you concerns on my foot. It is a real pain in the ....foot! Gary

Thanks so much Bren. What a wonderful idea. This will be pretty easy and I will start working on it. I may have a TinkerCad video first but I sure will show what you want after that. Gary

Great start to the series Gary. Personally I would like you to continue with the shape today for the next one as a natural progression. Keeping these. Take care my friend and look after your foot. Hwyl, Huw

Oh Shucks Gary! Sorry to hear about your ankle, prayers for quick healing. I enjoyed the video on the software for turning. I am curious as to what software you are using with your 3D printer. My kids and wife got me a 3D printer and I'm learning quite a bit from my oldest son as he has two that he runs. As always thanks for the video and the cat will be your best friend during your being laid up.

Thank you Mark I appreciate your prayers. So for complex designs for the 3D printer I use my CAD program. It is called BobCad but it is not free. I bought it for making solid models that I milled on my CNC. It also can create STL files which a 3D printer uses. A free program which will do a lot is TinkerCad. I have a video ready to show where I design and make parts for the lathe. The cat(Dinky) seems to share my chair. He waits for me to get up then steals it. Of course I call him a good boy for doing that so he thinks it is ok LOL. Thanks again my friend, Gary

Gary, glad that you’re doing better. Like this introduction to WTPro. You started to 3D print and my local guild has a printer. What sw do you use for design. I want to make some wedgies for my sled and looking at TinkerCad tutorials. Is this a good start?

Thanks so much Skip. I will have a TinkerCad video coming soon. It is a great progam and I will show some complex(looking) projects that are very easy. I have a CAD program I bought quite some time ago for my CNC mill use. I draw most things on it but they can be done on TinkerCad. I will look into making wedges on it. If so I can share the file on TinkerCad Gary

Very informative, Gary! I have looked at the Woodturner Pro suite of different software and found it interesting, but I thought some of the instructional videos they put out were clear as mud ; particularly the Laminations Pro part. Now that you have made a nice video, I think i will go back and revisit the software and try my hand at what you demonstrated for a single blank of wood. I was concentrating on making segmented bowls with the software and never did consider something like what you demonstrated. I think my experience to design feature rings via the Laminations Pro is what turned me off on continuing to learn about other features the suite has to offer. Now, you gave me the excuse to go back and revisit the software. Hope your ankle is better. Squeaks .... what squeaks?😂 I didn't hear anything in the back ground. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks John. I would say Lamination Pro is the most complex part of the software suite. Segment Pro the easiest and Woodturner Pro my favorite. When she told me she was going to put 2 pins in my angle I asked if one could have a zerk fitting. NOT! Gary

@ThePapa1947 Ya know, I asked the same thing about zerk fittings on my knee, elbow and pelvis when the surgeon used plates, screws, washers, lag bolts to put me back together. He didn't have much of a sense of humor back then, but he did do a good job considering the amount of trauma I went through. I claimed he went to Ace Hardware to get all those parts. Glad you have a good sense of humor about the zerk fitting. That tells me you're gonna do just fine down the road. I have a pneumatic grease gun I'll send ya if you want.

Thanks so much Jim, happy to hear you like these videos as well. So the cat(Dinky) loves to steal my chair. I have to wait till he gets up so I can sit. Well I do not HAVE to wait but we have ways to bribe him out LOL I may have to tell you the joke about the Lab report and the Cat scan...lol Thanks again, Gary

Thanks Gary, for us novices, perhaps you could tell us how to get the software and what platforms it works on. I use an iPad most of the time. Is it better in Windows or Apple?

Sure thing Noel. Go to WoodturnerPro.com and you can find it all there. It only works on a MAC with a Windows emulator is what I understand. Myself I have bought a few older laptops for a good price. I run laser software on them and I have the Woodturner Pro on one as well. That software does not need a real high end computer. I fist ran it on Windows 7 Best of luck, Gary

Would you please post a link to where I can buy the software? I have tried to find it, but the website I found keeps coming back "connection reset". Update: For some reason, on my computer, only my Tor Browser can get through. But on my phone, I have no problem. So, I'm sure the issue is on my end. Perhaps a firewall or other nanny software running on my network. I'll figure it out eventually. Meanwhile I do have the work-arounds. ;-)
