Good way on demonstrating what goes on with those straps under load. I’ve used plenty to strap equipment/wrecked vehicles and noticed you’ll have to think on how the product you have strapped down will handle. A few factors come to mind, driving down at hwy speeds could have an affect(wind can add more on the working load), driving over potholes/speed-bumps/coming to a complete stop abruptly and from a dead stop hitting the gas hard. Another thing to keep in mind, when your straps have a slit in the material that compromises the working load limit and you clearly shown what happens under the load. Learning a lot from your channel and made me laugh on a few. Great work and thanks for all these videos.

Thanks for posting this. Very helpful! The funny thing is that after hauling my very heavy cruiser motorcycle thousands of miles, I got the bright idea to have a strong flexible link in the strap. At first, I couldn't find any existing product like that and I thought I had a good enough idea to actually patent it. I did one more search and came up with Shockstraps. One of the things I really like about this is that even if the flexible link brakes, you still have the strap to back it up. That's something I hadn't thought of. I definitely have to order some of these. Thanks again!

I was watching your video and remembered that when I strap things down, after a mile or two, I pull over and cinch the straps. I always assumed it was my load shifting. I really liked watching this comparison video.

The one that broke was already badly frayed - dangerous and not suprised it broke. Tip - check out your local hire place for old 'layflat' hose - two inch stuff makes really good protection for straps that run over edges. Cut it into foot long lengths and then cut down the middle of a side, so it has a flat "c" section. The cut makes it easy to slip around the straps when they are in place, and over the corners/edges, then just need to tighten the straps down.

I also have issues with straps, I go back and forth to Florida a few times a year usually loaded down with fishing gear and the such, never seems to fail when at a gas stop or pee break I check my load only to find one or more straps loose. I believe I may have lost an expensive trolling motor because of it, I didn't see it come out but it sure was gone at the next stop.
@Titus-as-the-Roman7 жыл бұрын
I was kinda eventually doing what that strap does, if you want something tarped, strapped down or otherwise secured just do and use what professional Truckers do, which I was using multiple solid rubber bungees that I would get at truck stops in series with my straps, no more loose straps, but I would have to replace the bungees on a regular basis as they developed splits.
@traviskuntzmann76117 жыл бұрын
Those look good. I wounder how well they will hold up. I was told by a old trucker to put a slight twist in your strap and it'll prevent it from flapping in the air.

thanks Dirt for the new strap. i had lost my boat off my trailer, the main strap that went across the back of the boat broke the back of the boat came off the trailer
@tyrrellroach58727 жыл бұрын
So I have one question do the straps with the shock absorber allow equipment to walk on the trailer? Generally I only use straps on equipment I want to be able to unload quickly. Big pieces of equipment like skid steers I use chain because I don’t want it to move and straps tend to get cut on metal edges

I like the idea. Not a lot of shopping options out there. I looked on eBay but most sellers don't have a pic of actual product with a vague description.
@jenky10446 жыл бұрын
I'm going to have to try out those new straps. The red strap broke on that "self coiling" one, because you put the hook back on the strap itself ...that's not how you use straps unless they have a loop or a hook design for it. ** If D.O.T. catches you're doing that with equipment over the road, they'll show you the difference on paper.

I use and swear by the orange ANCRA extreme 2" straps for securing the ~300 boats I haul every year. They are stiffer and more durable than the usual yellow straps. The ratchet ends also store with the hooks around the handles making them much easier to pack up without looking like hell. I store the straps separately with the hooks out so that I can throw the coiled strap over the boat without risk of the hook doing damage. Three other good tips- 1.) Leave a half twist in any strap that is exposed to air flow. That simple half twist keeps the strap from oscillating in the wind and chafing itself (and your load) to death. 2.) Tuck the end of the strap into the ratchet to keep the end from chafing and to cut the amount of excess strap you have to stow in half. (those Ancra straps can also be folded up and tucked into the handle to keep them stowed. 3.) Most ratchet handles also have a safety latch that engages when the handle is fully closed. It locks the ratchet pawl into posistion so that is cannot back out and unreel the strap. ALWAYS make sure that safety latch is engaged.
@aaronsbarker7 жыл бұрын
And at $20-30 apiece, they are much more affordable. www.cargoequipmentcorp.com/2-x-27-ANCRA-X-Treame-Ratchet-Strap-with-Flat-Ho-p/a572784x-12.htm

@douglasthompson27407 жыл бұрын
Polyester deteriorates in sunlight--nylon does not (or at least nowhere near as fast). Nylon is also about three to four times as strong. Chafing gear on sharp edges is common sense. You could use steel cable or chain if you want to drop the stretch. Of course some elasticity is desirable withstand shock loads. I would like to see some coating to slow down corrosion as well. Grade eight deteriorates if it is rusted like other steels. Good topic. Take care. Doug

If you would like to know the proper way and proper equipment to use when strapping down your load JJ Higgins has wonderful information on their website or you can also take the JJ Higgins load securement test which I am required to take it work because I work on tractor trailers first of all those two straps I should say most of those two straps that you were using are nowhere near spec to hold the equipment that you have you haven't said what equipment you use to hold with them but I can only assume that you are over rating you're strapped for the equipment that you are tying down and as far as the air in the tires yes that is what causes your straps to loosen as the equipment bounces up and down on the trailer the tires lose air pressure loosening the load you really need to take the test or at least check out their website

That grade 8 bolt would be great. My problems with other straps were the bolts would shear and snap before the strap. Actually almost lost a golf cart going down the road when the bolts on the front sheared off. I always have to chain down buckets now because I'm afraid to use the straps. It warps the top of my bucket but at least with a chain I know it's not going anywhere.

Another huge problem with straps coming lose is people actually pull too much slack out of the ratcheting mechanism. So then you can't get a full wrap and a half or two wraps of webbing on the winch part of the ratchet and the webbing ends up slipping out. And keep them clean... when dirt and grit gets into the webbing it actually starts cutting the straps apart from the inside and they break much easier.
