Hey mate, wouldnt mind your opinion on something, i bought a pair of bestard brethorn pros, a number of years ago for a tahr hunting trip, i have been roped into doing the milford track with family and wondering whether these would be suitable or a bit overkill ( to rigid?) Or should i shell out for some more generic hiking boots? Cheers mate.

Sorry for late reply. As they are light and reasonably flexible they will be fine.

Hi, I live in South West England, on the edge of Dartmoor. I’m looking for a pair a hiking boots to handle the harsh, wet, boggy land of Dartmoor in the winter months especially. Are these Bestard good for wet English weather and tough terrain? How waterproof are they and are they good for mid wide feet?
@bootsandgear
@bootsandgear Жыл бұрын
Bestard fit in this one is medium wide almost extra wide. They are built to last but for bogs you want a higher boot like the Coto or similar without the composite sole, its a medium wide fit. All are waterproof.

These boots are nice, but i see no reason to compromise for 30$ with breithorn pro model, those feel so much more premium, even though the difference is small. I also didnt feel like bestflex 3 is rigid(like crampon rigid) at all, it felt like a normal trekking boot, but i guess that's because im well above 100kg, nevertheless the rigidity difference between these and nepal\cross is huge. Also i was surprised that my breithorns didnt need any break in period. I went grocery one day, hiked 3 hours the next day, took them to work, and departed to vacation turkey after, no blisters or any discomfort.

The leather in the Kathmandu is more durable. I'm resoling a 10 year old pair right now.

@@bootsandgear durability of the boot depends on user, not the boot. I know many guides and instructors who switched to cheaper and lighter composite models, that last two years, instead of expensive eu leather brands that last 3 for them. For me 10 years may be true though, as i use such boots 3-4 weeks over the year, at least it was true for my Lowa Tibets. Best of luck with your business.

So is the Breithorn Pro a good boot? I'm currently researching new boots after my berghaus hillmaster II gtx failed after 3 years! How waterproof are the Breithorn? I live near Dartmoor in England and its wet, boggy, rough terrain and can be harsh in winter. Any advice re the Breithorn would be welcomed.

@@NazSBG breithorn is not a winter boot, no insulation. If it's like scary wet any boots but wellies will be wet, and would go with something made for that conditions, for example lundhags

The Kathmandu model features a "normal" sole and not a semi-rigid sole (which is required for crampons).
@bootsandgear
@bootsandgear Жыл бұрын
Strap-on crampons and ice grips are ok. NZ a normal is an ordinary walking type.

Totally. Its pretty much all return buyers for it. Its been here in NZ for over 8 years. Bestard went to a blue colour more suited to the EU market then went back to the grey so we re-ordered them. Cheers

@@bootsandgearI've just ordered a pair. I usually use scarpa. Are they a similar fit as in width? Do these take a semi rigid crampon?
@bootsandgear

Wider than Italian feet and will take a strap-on type.@@johnn7614

@@bootsandgearGot them. They seem decent. Remind me a bit of the old scarpa manta boots. Seem decent but haven't abused them on the Scottish mountains yet.

Sorry mate, but the Kathmandu is not fitted with a semi-rigid but a normal sole; for semi-rigid you want to look at the Crossover model.
@bootsandgear
@bootsandgear 5 жыл бұрын
Kathmandu does indeed have a full length semi rigid shank in it and it is not just a "normal" whatever that is. Rigidity difference of approx 10 to 15%. bestard class it as half the rigidity calling semi rigid a 6 and the normal as 3 which in no way is very indicative to how it feels to wear. Hope it clarifies. We do things our way bestard have theirs. You can follow whatever information you choose. If I was buying something that they say is half as rigid as the Crossover and received the Kathmandu I'd be bewildered. Boot makers make boots. Our experience is their real world thinking is often disconnected to the person who buys their product. We clarify it for the normal people.
@andreasb.769
@andreasb.769 5 жыл бұрын
You clarify it for the "normal people" (?) ... whatever that means;-and I own both boot models and can attest to what Bestard state, since for example only the Bestflex 6 will be able to handle crampons. Then again, it is always amusing when sales talk knows better than the manufacturer himself with his extended experience in building boots since the 40's in addition to the fact that some in the family owned business are also mountaineers. Best of luck!

Well I've also worn both from bestard. For hunting in steep country. 30 kilo pack . I also repair boots from all manufacturers. There are many good manufacturers and I see all their faults and hear customers direct feedback morso than just one manufacturers does.. regarding their own quality control and inventory. They don't repair also Meindl Lowa Asolo Haix etc etc Literally every brand on NZ market. They are each selling their own design thing for sales marketing. Just have to read their brochures for that. Stitching all over the place and the latest cool thing in soles. We are more traditional as they prefected boot manufacture over 40 years ago. So we sell mainly EVA midsole for example. Boring looking. We definitely aren't offering the snazzy sales talked up features of the month with that. More interested our own customer having a durable boot feature . Actually that EVA midsole and the Sareks insole are are the best thing bestard have. bestard the manufacturer quote normal flex don't they.. Which to quote you normal is" whatever that means" leaves the customer perplexed. What is normal. Its far closer and descriptive to categorize them as semi rigid than suggesting its half as rigid as a crossover like bestard do which is not correct in terms of rigidity if you flex them in your hands. I don't feel half as less rigid. The shank is not twice as thick. We have been categorizing all our semi rigid boots in this group for 13 years. read our look at our other descriptions to verify. Sold thousand of semi rigid boots. Carrying on. If it was an issue we certainly would address it. Thanks

You won't be so sad in ten years time and they are still going. We resole and they do flex more after use. However running shoe type boots they ain't but they do have a good roll forward off the toe which is good. I used a pair for stalking.
