As a South African youth from Alexandra, I'm proud of Zanele and Andrew for reaching for their dreams plus representing Kasi (Township) food culture well 💚 When you're born in a township, the struggles around you seem normal. It's only when you go outside of your township you realise there's actually a problem. It then hits you that there's more to life and you have the potential to do better. A number of people are in fact defeated in townships especially where I come from, Alexandra. Not because people don't want better but because of the environment itself. It takes a lot of mental, emotional, physical and financial fight to push through these barriers left by the Apartheid regime plus created by ourselves unconsciously. There's so much potential and untapped talent in Townships. Side note: I'm actually going to try the Mogodu recipe as instructed 🍲

As a South African who has watched this show for some years, I’m glad the team conducted thorough research. We are a very diverse nation with a history of division. As a South African, I love this. I was blessed to grow up in the city but the love I have for Townships is beyond measure. I have friends and family in the Townships, and I love visiting because of the rich diversity there especially street food. I love that clay, so I laughed when I saw him trying to eat it
@mattvanr2361 Жыл бұрын
You should stay in the Township with the rest of the garbage, fuck that place fuck you and the food sucks. Ya let's go to Soweto were rape murder and robbery is a normal thing and if that doesn't kill you the HIV will. Afrikaans food is amazing

Andrew was really great. I live in SA as well an very much relate to his mindset, the harder you work the luckier you become. I feel like you could do another 10 episodes in South Africa and you still wouldn't see all the variety of cultures and food in the country. Great episode. It also has to be said, really impressed with the areas he chose to go to. I am sure they had armed security but still, these are not the safest areas but it is authentic street food. You will get better quality food in up market areas with more expensive cuts of meat but that isn't what most of the country is eating.

I worked 3 weeks in Johannesburgs township Alexandra building a school, yes its weird to be there, but the people are so happy like I have never seen anywhere else.

For me, Sonny's show has really filled the void left behind by Anthony Bourdain. It really scratches the itch for a great food/travel show. Keep up the good work.

As a Cameroonian i was surprised to see calabash chalk been eaten in SA too, growing up people ate this a lot especially women don't know why but it was a good pastime especially digging it after school and eating on your way home 🙂🙂. ours was very white not yellowish like the one I'm seeing here
@samoneed1 Жыл бұрын
This tradition is continued in the state of Georgia in the US. African Americans eat the clay or chalk. Mainly pregnant women crave it. An alternative is also corn starch.
@ShaqleeToine10.02 Жыл бұрын
It's mostly pregnant women...but also most Africans tend to have issues with a lack of Iron...so yeah this is our "supplement"

I'm South African and was not aware of calabash chalk until I saw this video. I think it is more common in the Joburg townships, because there are lots of immigrants from other parts of Africa. I know a Ghanaian, another Ghanaian family, a Nigerian, two Ugandans and many Zimbabweans. Before I moved to Joburg, I didn't know any foreigners, as I lived in a small city that wasn't that attractive to foreigners.

How Sonny is able to break barriers and to pronounce names is underrated. The man is a genius at what he does as he goes beyond just reviewing food but understanding the tradition and culture of the people he's talking to. On this episode he went where I'm sure 99% of South African "celebrities" or even politicians have never set their foot on and he's probably the only white person who has been there.

what would be your definition of "understanding the tradition and culture"? I think you need a lot more time and relationships with the people to "understand" it, if that is even possible.

Thank you so much for considering SA as a destination of choice for your exploration of food cuisine.

You've honestly picked the best people for the South African leg of this series. Lebo was fantastic and now Andrew and Zanele. I don't know Zanele but I know Andrew and Lebo. Lebo has tons of personality and TV experience so she's entertaining. Andrew is a fantastic chef (you gotta try his food chicken place) and so so passionate about Johannesburg and knows a lot about the City. Very proud of what Zanele has also achieved and all the hard work she's put behind her business. Great content guys ❤. You have a new fan Side bar... 11:14 ithumbu is intestines, not sheep's head

Andrew has a growth mindset and are willing to grow even in the most difficult environment. He’s right it’s hard to motivate others with a limited mindset to see beyond what’s happening around them.
