That back flip was badass… and savagely dangerous. Rollouts in particular HAD to be banned- just ask Elena Mukhina. Quad series weren’t banned, they just don’t receive connection bonus so no one does them. A four DIFFERENT skill acro series (Deng Linlin in 2012) do still receive bonus. Belly beats aren’t banned, the bars are just farther apart making them impossible to do. The Sillivas mount wasn’t banned either, it’s just no one does it anymore because it’s not valuable. The Comaneci dismount isn’t banned, it’s just that it isn’t possible with the bars farther apart. Front tumbling is still allowed, it’s just no one is doing it currently.

The Comaneci dismount is entirely possible with the bars farther apart. You just go the other way, as Nadia herself did. It's a low-difficulty dismount, so few elite gymnasts do it these days, but it's popular at the sub-Olympic level.
@joansmall84103 ай бұрын
Korbut and Comaneci were the greatest so PLEASE do not devalue the difficulty of their flips on the uneven balance beam/uneven bars nor floor routines. What a disgrace. SERIOUSLY? I would love to see some of these back in the routines to see if today's gymnasts could handle it which I'm sure some could. Give them credit where credit's due. Gymnasts are just that. Not runners. Today's routines look so mechanical.
@archiculturenaturetravels91118 күн бұрын
LOL. Most gymnasts today can easily handle Korbut's and Comaneci's skills, as they are quite easy. Today's gymnasts perform infinitely harder skills. Their routines may not look as pretty and artistic as the routines we saw in the 1970s, because the emphasis is on difficulty rather than artistry now, but as far as difficulty is concerned, today's routines far eclipse anything ever done by Korbut or Comaneci. Korbut did not perform a single skill that is rated higher than C in today's Code of Points (although I suspect her flip on bars would be rated D today if it were still allowed). Most of her skills are rated A and B these days. Comaneci mostly performed C-rated skills, with a few Ds on beam that can be seen in pretty much any elite beam routine these days. Her one skill that is still considered difficult today is her eponymous Comaneci salto (cast to immediate straddled front somersault) on bars, which is rated E. By contrast, today's top gymnasts have routines full of D- and E-rated skills, and many also have E-, F- and G-rated skills. Simone Biles has several H-rated skills. She could probably learn most of Korbut's skills in a matter of days, but there is absolutely no reason for her to do so, as she is awarded many more points for doing her own skills.

The reason the Korbut flip was verboten - the bar could break or detach due to the heavy weight by the gymnast - and if the bar breaks at the time the gymnast does the backflip to finish off the Korbut - the gymnast could end up like Mukhina - landing hard on one's neck as the gymnast slams hard on the mat ground on impact, shattering it (the C1-C3 spine especially), and end up quadraplegic.
@charlessmith2633 ай бұрын
This alludes to what happened to Maggie Fitzgerald in the movie "Million Dollar Baby" who broke her cervical spine after falling down and hitting a wooden chair - although she was a boxer (not a gymnast), and ended up bedridden for life. Being paralyzed for doing risky gymnastics in competition may not be worth the physical spectacle here.

Few skills have been banned, and those only for a question of security (of those shown here, only the rollouts and the Korbut flip). Belly beats are simply no more physically possible, due to the bars being too distant. The others are no more executed because they are not rewarded enough and, since the number of elements you can put into an exercise is limited, athletes prefer to concentrate on more rewarding ones.

Gone are the days of Olga and Nadia (Olga was always my absolute favourite). I didn't even watch one gymnastics event as the last few Olympics it just looks nothing like it once did. You not only had to be graceful and powerful but many had their own specific move which made them all individual. Now it's just strength moves and there's absolutely nothing artistic involved. It's not pretty. It's not graceful. There's no wow factor anymore. It's just doing the required moves and sticking landings. That's it. Plus the mats are like ten times bouncier now so it wasn't like Olga and Nadia had that in their day. Heaven knows how incredible those performances would have been. The same has been creeping into men's ice skating as well. Everyone has to do a quadruple. No one is wowing anyone anymore like Evgeni Plushenko (who was always my absolute favourite). They took the style out and put jumps in and if you can't do a certain one you aren't going to get the gold...but they sacrificed beauty and elements of "wow" for technical dominance. The last I saw was Yuzuru Hanyu who combined the two but was heavily into style. Sadly, that is a rarity nowadays.
@jacobmiller266325 күн бұрын
Actually that has been disproven, the extra springs doesn’t enhance jumping ability. It helps absorb heavy landings. Ian Gunther, a gymnast on social media, disproved that the extra springs in the floor act like a trampoline, but instead is for landings.

You may not like their routines as much because they lack the artistry and elegance of the old days, and I 100% agree with that, but to say that today's routines lack difficulty or complexity is an absolute joke. 1970s gymnasts would die if they did even a fraction of what Simone Biles does.
