I am undiagnosed but I’m pretty sure I have AMPS. I got no progress for years, until I decided to overload my body with pain without any breaks, or as little of a “break” as I could. I realized those breaks were actually points of failure. I just started working myself to failure every day, in every way. It’s getter better and easier and faster to get through pain.

There’s no feeling like finishing a book, and I’m proud of this one. I’ve spent the last few years reflecting on my presidency, and in A Promised Land I’ve tried to provide an honest accounting of my presidential campaign and my time in office: the key events and people who shaped it, my take on what I got right and the mistakes I made, and the political, economic, and cultural forces that my team and I had to confront then--and that as a nation we are grappling with still. In the book, I’ve also tried to give readers a sense of the personal journey that Michelle and I went through during those years, with all the incredible highs and lows. ─BARACK OBAMA

Finally, at a time when America is going through such enormous upheaval, the book offers some of my broader thoughts on how we can heal the divisions in our country going forward and make our democracy work for everybody--a task that won’t depend on any single president, but on all of us as engaged citizens.─ -

Children's mercy Kansas City has a very good amps clinic, if you are near there. That's where I was diagnosed

A rheumatologist is the one who diagnoses a lot of AMPS. Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia has an amazing program for AMPS for kids under 17. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital also has a good program for peds patients with any pain syndrome or chronic pain that heavily impacts their life.

Along with being a fun and informative read, I hope more than anything that the book inspires young people across the country--and around the globe--to take up the baton, lift up their voices, and play their part in remaking the world for the better.─ *Barack Obama*

So I guess pain medicine doesn’t help you at all huh? This program, whether you improved or not, was structured very dangerously-no actual medical professional should ever push the body in that way. Pacing is extremely important, and so is pain medicine. Listening to someone talk about how special they are for drinking the “not trying hard enough theory of disability” koolaid is not inspiring.

As someone who went through the same program, it was very structured and we were checked by doctors daily.

The basis of AMPS is that our nerves are hyper sensitive and they send amplified pain responses to our brain. The goal of these programs is to re-train your nervous system into behaving more normally and getting your daily function back. Doctors that work with AMPS will tell you “the goal is the reduce pain by 80% and improve function by 80%.” Pain meds aren’t recommended for AMPS patients because most of the time they are pediatric patients and studies have shown that they don’t do much for amplified pain responses.
