If you're playing a Japanese copy on a us SNES, the cart might be thinking its a pirate copy, which is why it's erasing itself. Earthbound does something similar.

They do, there's a small technique Nintendo made in the SNES as a region lock. Notice how the inside of the SNES slot has thin rectangular humps near the sides while the cartridges have holes to allow them to slide in. The Super Famicom cartridges are a bit more round but don't have the slots for the humps making them unusable for an SNES unless you were to work on removing said humps to make them usable.

I think I know why the developers put a star on Raphael the Raven. Raphael the Raven's death animation is him turning into a constellation star in the sky. You see the star in the middle of the constellation. They probably put the star on him to make it visible when he died, but made sure it was invisible when he was alive by making it the same color as his body.

That is actually a good theory. But the star that appears on Raphael’s constellation is angled differently so it’s either the sprite for the constellation is a completely different sprite to Raphael or the star on Raphael is on a different layer and when the constellation appears it gets rotated

it seems to me with the tree and mushroom they tried to implement stealth, and it didnt work so they got canned this might be a bit of a stretch but imagine this a section where you have to sneak past enemies to get past (maybe like the sign guys in yoshi's story so you can't just jump over them?) if they spot you, they smack you back to the beginning of the stage, but if you have the transformation and stand still, they don't notice you, so you can move past when they turn around i dunno maybe i'm overthinking it, i can't imagine anything else they could be used for since mushrooms and trees don't particuarly have any interesting abilities (and the mushroom has a sprite where it's just a mushroom, which gave me the idea)

The Super FX chip could be defected. I had my game delete my save files. Tested the battery voltage it was just fine. It would boot but for some reason when you get to the spinning cylinder or the falling doors it would freeze the game.

@@dustyk01 They most certainly can be. Cartridge bootlegging wasn't all that uncommon back in the day, and there were plenty of games that had anti-bootlegging measures. It wasn't uncommon at all for anti-bootlegging measures to behave exactly as described in the video, however some were more creative (like the Earthbound anti-bootlegging, which was just plain evil)

This is hands down my favorite Mario game ever. I got it at a flea market somewhere around 1999 and have stuck to that statement ever since. The control is amazingly fluent and spot on which enhance the game play to max. So there is no blaming the controller on this game. People use to complain about the baby and yeah.. it might be annoying. But when you master the game you rarely loose the baby long enough for him to cry. Anyway, great video. I really enjoyed some development on the backstory of one of my all time favorite games ever.

I know that it's been a while since you've asked why the cartridge does this, but I remember encountering the exact same sort of problem when I was tilting my F-Zero cartridge once. This cartridge would always, always boot up and still does, but after a specific cartridge tilt that removed all options from the title screen, turned the screen black and white, froze the game and stopped the music entirely, it took me 3 to 4 different times to get the cartridge to boot. I feel that there is an internal connection error occuring with your Super Famicom version of Yoshi's Island...I wouldn't be able to figure out which pin it is for you as I'm no sort of expert on computer architectures or wiring for electronic devices, but if you were to have a friend that's good with said situations open the cartridge and do a full checkup of all pin integrity on both chips and connector, it would most likely explain it. Sure, a permanently flashed chip can have data loss of it's own over time, but extremely few cartridges for any cartridge-accepting console have approached such a fate just yet.

Remember playing this at a friend's house, along with the DKC trilogy, when I was young. His mother sadly passed away before my 11th birthday and the memories I had there and at another friend's house during my preteen years, were timeless! I grew up with the SNES at the first friend's house and then the N64 at the second friend's house. It was between 1993-2003 where I had my childhood at both friends' houses. The second one was during the Pokemon craze of 1998-2001 and I'll never forget the time I saw the first Pokemon movie in theaters! I remember almost getting lost and crying because I couldn't find the family I saw the movie with. Thankfully I found them. I'm so glad I grew up in the 90s!

Hey i have the same problem with my kirbys dreamland 2 for my gameboy. Probably the game doesnt work because the saving chip is faulty. I removed the battery ( so the saving chip doesnt get any power) and now it works without issues but i will probably never be able to save the game again.

I was also getting a similar problem with my old Japanese copy of Donkey Kong Land (Super Donkey Kong GB), it kept loading random world maps and I can't play the game, I've even made a video about it on my channel.

***** No it is a left over DKC CGI rendered piece of artwork, notice the style? Oh wait your color blind. :( Well fuck. Well I will say that THE yoshi coin is DESIGNED as an unused because in development, this game was supposed to look like DKC series, but later on turned into this art style.
