The GPS receiver antenna is actually the thin foil sticker on top of the ceramic block. Before wrapping it in tape, it's a good idea to cover it in heat shrink first to protect that foil layer. Otherwise, when pealing off the tape, there's a good chance the antenna comes with. The best lessons in life are learned through pain . . .

I've gone on from using zero protection (not even common sense sometimes). Now I'm adding an active buzzer/beeper to every quad (whether built by me or BNF). No longer am I buying any VTX that does not use some type of smart audio. My antennas got upgraded from omni to lollipops and I finally got a decent pair of goggles. My most recent build was built with the intention of creating a waterproof 5" racer. It turned out great! Probably the fastest and definitely the lightest weight I've got. Now I am considering building one more. I plan to add GPS to my next build, bringing the evolution of my build quality to a new level! Always need to check this channel to sort out or confirm/debunk something like quad build or quad pilot related questions and scenarios! It's like the online holy bible of quad!

About the accelerometer drift, here is an old post I made describing how I fixed it on one quad if anyone is interested: My angle mode was broken, and I fought it for a whole year before I finally solved the problem just using betaflight settings. Here is the problem, I start flying the quad in angle mode, and at first it hovers very level. Then after 30 seconds it is drifting slightly. Then after 1 minute it is drifting a lot. Then after about 2 minutes, full stick deflection is not enough to keep it level. I would name this behavior "Worsening Drift". Here are the three settings that fixed it for me. This is the default: set acc_lpf_hz = 20 set accxy_deadband = 40 set accz_deadband = 40 This is what I changed it to: set acc_lpf_hz = 1 set accxy_deadband = 80 set accz_deadband = 80 Now it can hover very level for the whole flight. Its perfect. I don't fully understand why this worked. I suspect the increased accxy_deadband is the most important setting. I really needed angle mode to work on this quad because it is a small FlexRc Owl that I give to novices if they want to try flying a quad.

I also wanted to say how impressed I am with Betaflight rescue mode. I recently finished a 7 inch build, my first Betaflight build and have been working on getting rescue working. I am on Betaflight 4.1.2 and after some adjustment with the hardware (accelerometer was upside down). Rescue mode works like a charm. I love the fact that everything is displayed in the OSD. I always know when failsafe and or rescue is enabled. The behavior I am seeing is a return just past home and the begin some kind of circling before starting to ease down. Thanks again!

I like to set my min_sats to 0. This is because sometimes with heavy cloud cover or other sky obscuration you can't get enough satellites for a 3d fix and you are grounded. With min_sats sets to zero you can choose to fly without a 3d fix if necessary. When activated without a 3d fix, gps rescue will default to angle mode and can still help for momentary failsafes.
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
Good advice.
@AlexandrIDK6 жыл бұрын
0 sats, is bad idea. Clouds have almost no effect on the signal quality and the number of satellites, only the power feed. Any bad gps have cold start 2,5 minute (max), if you have more than 2,5 you have bad build quad. Use ferrite ring on gps wire. Chanel and video about gps. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqSuq2NnjLWjps0

Alexandr Bazanov and you won’t get a fix if you need to return to home, you need at least 4 sats before you arm to get a fix so it know where to return to. If you set it to zero no point in having the gps in the first place
@SchonRichtig6 жыл бұрын
@@gizzmomambo I also set it to 0, if I may need GPS rescue I wait until I have at least 8 sats. Honestly, I feel like this gps-failsafe mode is more dangerous for beginners than the drop from the sky failsafe mode. Because when the quad drops from the sky, the behavior is completely predictable. It drops from the sky like a bullet and hits whatever is beneath it. The only unpredictable thing is how damaged your quad will be. But with gps-failsafe your home-point may be a "kinda close but normally safe enough" distance (like 100m) away from a road. Now you fly across the road and 100m further gps-rescue gets activated. The quad flies home, starts descending and descends right into a car because you fail to take over because you don't know that you really need to land manually because you are just a beginner who hasn't completely understood gps-failsafe-mode. Or if you are trying to copy Steele but you don't have his skill and are flying in a city between houses, gps-rescue gets activated - the quad ascends but not high enough and slams into a building. I am NOT hating gps-rescue mode. I think it is really good for some people. However it is one of the features that should never be on by default and that you should really learn about before turning them on. This video was great for exactly that!

@victorstr93966 жыл бұрын
From an experienced GPS flyer. A failsafe GPS is good when you fly in open area where you have space to a ascend to predetermined altitude. It will be horrible if you fly below tree canopy and lost signal. The quad will try to shoot itself into treetops and get stuck and continue to push until all motors are burnt or battery is completely drained if you can't find it. Another scenario is one of the motors/esc fails in-flight and the quad plunges into the ground, losing signal in the process. If you didn't disarm in time, GPS failsafe wii kicks in and push all motors to full until radio signal is recovered. Not to say GPS is bad, you just need to be caution.

With my old Cheerson CX-20 GPS quad (what essentially started me out in this hobby), upgrading the GPS unit drastically increased the number of satellites it locked onto and reduced the lock time, further to that, shielding it from the flight controller with some foil helped it further. Joshua Bardwell - On failsafe kicking in the concern isn't with anti-taz (it should already be deactivated due to flight), but rather with crash recovery. GPS Rescue uses crash recovery to trigger a disarm on crashes. So if failsafe is entered and stage 1 causes the quad to tumble (usually only if people have motor_stop enabled and no airmode), the self leveling when stage 2 starts could sometimes trigger a crash detection. This has been addressed in 4.0 with a crash recovery guard time whenever a self-level mode is entered. The correct fix is to make sure that stage 1 sets things properly to not enter into free fall with motors stopped though.

I have a GPS on the quad since the beginning. Nice to see something resembling altitude and speed in the OSD, and transmitting the GPS coordinates through telemetry to the Taranis already proved very useful when I crashed in tall grass where you can only see the quad if you step on it. I mounted the GPS unit slightly further up the arm towards the motor, this eliminates propstrike risk. Those patch antennas are not durable; the silver on the ceramic is very thin. I have also been using the GPS rescue mode for a couple of months now and used it successfully once when I lost video after diving behind a damp hill. But I do have some issues with it. Sometimes the quad flips 180 degrees (that is, upside down) shortly after activation of the rescue mode. It is not 'thrust stops, quad tumbles down', but a 180 flip with the horizon level and the ground in the upper part of the goggles. Needless to say that this is usually unrecoverable :) I know that my accelerometer works fine (and it is calibrated); for precision landings I still prefer to do the last few meters in angle mode and that never let me down. Any idea what might cause this?

Hi, thanks for your video! I have a fc board with baro. When calculating altitude betaflight mixes gps and baro data which messes up the altitude information. How can I make betaflight use the baro data only? Thanks!

Hello Thanks for the tutorial, very good !! I have a Taranis x9d and a Beitian BN-220 GPS. The lat and long coordinates of the GPS in the OSD of the glasses are correct, but the coordinates that it shows me on the radio screen are incorrect. Is there a way to correct the error in the Taranis? Thanks and regards!!

Lost my $600 setup on the first flight with a brown out... Didn't have GPS or a buzzer. Learned an expensive lesson that day.

I have those on both my smooth operators and the place to display the coordinates is the TX screen I also log Max speed min RSSI ect. I have found flying with home pointer lets me fly in really dense woods, It's good fun flying over the canopy diving in completely lost and follow the pointer and if it goes wrong I can put the coordinates into google maps I my phone.

Hey Joshua I have your F4 in 2 guards with a buzzer TBS CrossFit and of coarse VTX and Camera. Question is there enough Uarts to add a GPS.

I've been going further with my cinepro 4k lately. I converted it to 3" and added R9mm. VTx 25mw is already going over half a mile. Thinking if I go any further I should add a GPS. My buzzer isn't even loud. But not sure where to mount. Guess I can put on a arm . I run big batteries too film longer so not much room up top. Thought battery strap but after you said could break idk
