If you've got a power-over-usb FC (JBF4, CLR F4S, and Kakute F7 are some that I have used and confirmed the following for) and an Rx that uses a plug-in style wire harness that is connected to the power-over-usb 5v pad, then simply leave the Rx unplugged from the harness while you set up pass-through and start the FrSky STK, then plug it in once you are ready to write to the Rx. Works perfectly for me without having to change my wiring away from the power-over-usb 5v pads. Unfortunately for R9 Mini quads (including my own) being a direct solder Rx this trick doesn't apply. Just updated my R9 Slim+ this way and will be doing this for all of my R-XSR quads as well. Thanks Josh, informative content as always. Hope this tip helps someone out there.

Just a note for those who have FCs that power up the RX [ R9 SLIM in my case ]: Disconnect the R9 SLIM cable > connect FC > Do exactly what JB does until he plugs the battery. Use female to female servo connector, don't forget to rearrange the pins in the connector on the radio side if you're using X9D because the GND VCC data pins aren't aligned correctly which will be resulting in smoke! Also, make sure the battery in your X9D isn't over 10V because the VCC is a direct battery voltage.

Anyways first thank you. Second unfortunately I had to do it this way cause I was having trouble flashing a new R9MM from both the XJT External port as well as the S.Port on the QX7. It kept telling me something about bottom pin not responding. Yes I swapped the power and ground when switching from XJT to S.Port flashing. So now that it's flashed and bound and shows to be working in the receiver tab in BF I deleted all existing sensors from my radio config and the discovered new sensors and get nothing. If switch back to my XSR it discovers sensors fine. So is this receiver hosed? It's been nothing bout trouble since I received it. I have successfully flashed and installed a working R9MM in another quad so it's not my first rodeo with it but, I am at wits end with what else I can do to make this thing work. I'm obviously not gonna allow myself to fly on a receiver that wont output telemetry data. Your my last hope before I have a back up antenna circular file this receiver. Thanks.

You can also use serial pass through on the Matek VIDEO TRANSMITTER 5.8G VTX-HV to update the firmware by connecting up rx and tx ,but I don't know if you can do this while video and audio are also connected and it's installed in your quad? www.mateksys.com/?portfolio=vtx-hv#tab-id-6 ,I will have to try it.

Joshua, do you have an idea of how the EU vs international firmware compare? I read on Oscar Liang's page that the international one has a higher sensitivity. But I'm not satisfied with the RSSI from the international FW compared to my older LBT one... Do you have any insight on that? Anyway, thanks for the information in this video as always. ;)
@sm1thers6 жыл бұрын
Looks like you are in Germany, using the None EU firmware is a no go, because it uses the wrong frequency so you will receive interference from Mobile phone towers etc. Shame as the EU firmware is rubbish. I understand that we cant legally have >25mW telem in the EU and cant have >500mW on the module. but the EU firmware misses all the useful powers, its 25mw or 500 with nothing in between, and for 16 channels its 500mW or nothing. Hopefully they will release some sensible firmware soon as having everyone blasting 500mW is ridiculous.
@kral59326 жыл бұрын
You can now also use 100mw withought telemetry up to 16 channels on eu firmware :)
@hateeternalmaver6 жыл бұрын
Epicness 357 okay, I do like telemetry though. Still, do you have any more info on that, a link or something? I am going back to EU anyways because I'm not satisfied with international, probably due to what the other guy said...

look up the "Frsky R9 Users" group on Facebook, lots of good help on there and a decent FAQ's on the modules in well underway.

I think it can be done but I don't know the serial port number for softserial. You should ask over on the betaflight support group and see if a dev knows the answer.

Hey, I recently built my first quad... but while setting it up in betaflight after I had bound the receiver (R-xsr) to my q x7 i was not getting any response in the Receiver tab. I watched a ton of your videos on all versions of betaflight and realised that when I typed "status" into the CLI the arming flags were RX-loss, CLI and MSP. This was while I had my receiver bound to my tx and the quad was powered on. I have my configuration set to serial based receiver and SBUS, and i have tried every UART port possible. Please help me! thanks
@Rob198219826 жыл бұрын
U probably used the connector wich came with the rxsr .u must move the yellow wire inside the connector. This is a cable to update the receiver.yellow is the smartport not the sbus. Grtz
@linusg82396 жыл бұрын
Rob Fpv I see what you mean. Can I update the receiver using the yellow wire to fport and use it that way?
@Rob198219826 жыл бұрын
No u need to move the yellow wire down to sbus out on the rxsr. It is actually the telemetry wire .also very useful.
@bitswede6 жыл бұрын
Is the led blue or green on the r-xsr? If it's green you're in PPM mode, which happens if you hold the bind button for too long. To get back to sbus mode you power up the receiver while holding down the bind button until the blue led comes on.

Hey on the Bardwell f4 v2 there should not be continuity between 3.3/5v and ground right or should there be? what would happen if I plug the battery in like this? thanks.
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
DON'T PLUG THE BATTERY IN. The most likely explanation is that you bridged 3.3v to 5v when you did the solder bridge to select receiver power. The bridge on the underside of the board.
@Hwyw6 жыл бұрын
I think what happened is I scraped the top layer of the board off next to the 3.3/5v pad so when I soldered that pad it bridged the pad and the exposed metal. Anyways i took some of the solder off that pad and now it seems to not be connected to ground. is that possible? is the material under the top layer of black stuff connected to ground ? needles to say my problem seems to be resolved. thanks

@@JoshuaBardwell ahhh I just found this information.. This is my issue. Nice Video! I'm not having trouble updating r9, but connecting to MW OSD, I've got some crappy old backup backup backup Quad, which has the Flycolor Raptor 390 stack which has MW OSD R1.5, you're supposed to be able to connect using serialpassthrough, but in the MW Osd GUI it gets stuck reading or doesn't start to read at all, so I can't configure it, do you have any tips?
@JoshuaBardwell6 жыл бұрын
Make sure baud rate is set correctly. Power the MWOSD at the right moment to catch the bootloader window. This is the hardest part. If you use an FTDI adapter it has the ability to reboot the device to trigger the bootloader window. But that doesn't work over passthrough.

Joshua Bardwell Thanks for the response, I don't want to flash it though, I want to connect it, I'm sorry if that was confusing.

I have to say it.... cause I know there are others that won't. Watching this video was super informative. But as much as I really wanted to purchase Frsky's long range system I will not now. This updating thing has gotten out of hand on more then just this system. But I think this is totally ridiculous. Why can't it not come ready to fly updated and all. I use a Mac and along with everything you did there will be even more hoops to jump through or odd steps to this lengthy process. I love you but no thanks FrSky!!

would something bad happend to the FC if i flashed the receiver with the s.port on the taranis while it still is conected to the FC? cause i did it :/ i have used servo pins to get it mounted solid. (just like one the magnum f4 stack) so it was very easy to just add the flashing cable to the top of the pins. i left 1mm poking out of the receiver so i can use a servo plug to flash it. but i noticed the s.port cable from the taranis powered up the fc also :/
@JoshuaBardwell5 жыл бұрын
If you are going to flash via S.Port yes I do agree you need to disconnect it from the FC.
@Victor90NOR5 жыл бұрын
I already did it. Hehe. The fc made some extra beeps and it drained the taranis battery super fast but it seemed to work. I dont think its possible to write via the tx pad to the FC.

Hey brother! I know questions in the comments are super long and inefficient... I have the XM+, your JB FC, and the XJT module :( And no friends who fly FrSky :( . Is it "Serial passthrough 0 57600" since the sbus is going into UART 1 as I understand it? Or am I misunderstanding things completely?

Temporarily moved the receiver SBUS wire from the SBUS pad to the SmartPort Telemetry pad and it recognized & updated (still a little foggy on terms and differences; serial port vs. UART, SmartPort, SBUS, why serialpassthrough only forwards to a smartport and not an SBUS, etc :) THANK YOU! Frsky tool didn`t find COM port which I was using for betaflight (COM3). I workaround it by that I start FrskyTool and it found some other COM1 port, then I remap COM ports in windows device manager, at first other device remap to COM2, and then betaflight (holybro) COM3 I remaped to COM1. After this, I start with flashing procedure, do passthrough in bf, close bf and then connect battery to quad, after it FrskyTool (which was running from beginning) found my receiver firmware version... so I was able to flash new one. Hope it can help to someone else with same problem with frusb-3-fuc-3 (frsky_update_sport_rev14.zip) tool COM port problem.
