Betfair trading strategies - Scalping on Betfair explained - Full tutorial

Most people are looking to easy to pick up, profitable, Betfair trading strategies.
A popular Betfair trading strategy on the Betfair betting exchange is scalping. Based on the comments I've received on other Betfair videos, I thought I would do one on scalping, a full tutorial.
This video is a bit longer than some of the video I've produced but that is so we can talk about all aspects of Scalping in great depth.
We can also talk in-depth about the EPIQ or estimated position in queue feature on Bet Angel and how you might use this when scalping a market. In this case the Cheltenham festival.

Excellent video, many thanks. I am reluctant to place a back/lay trade like this in case the lay is taken, price continues to drop resulting in a large liability, prefering to place a bet then a subsequent lay when the bet has been taken. However, this is a fascinating insight into many other features of which I was unaware.

Blimey - great video Peter and very helpful in simplifying the scalping objective and process for achieving it. I'm just in the process of upping my game from matched betting to trading and this cuts right through the other less simple explanations out there that have focussed on weight of money, trading order flow etc....and gets straight to the point...which for a complete novice like me is a welcome and refreshing change. Hi Peter. Thanks for the nice video. At 10:45 you say that, if the back and lay bets get matched, the profit will be 6.0 * £128.00 - 5.9 * £128.00 = £12.80. Why didn't you account for the 5% commissions that Betfair take from the winning bets?

Finally took the plunge today and started the free trail. Stuck £100 into betfair doing £5 and £10 swing trading and scalps. £2 up. Happy with that apart from 1 of the loses where I failed to get out in time for a £2 loss (i saw it coming and should have acted). A month of put it into practice, then the bank roll goes up 10x

Hooray, you have added a position in queue feature at last. I trialed Bet Angel and others last year and found , for my style of trading, was almost essential but Bet Angel didn't have this feature whereas GT and others did. So I went for GT even though BA is superior in many respects. Would like to free trial Bet Angel again now it has this feature. Not sure that is possible though.

Hi Peter, great video. I just wondered, maybe you picked this point in the market randomly, but do you think it makes any difference that we're near a cross over point? Basically the one tick against us here will cost us twice as much as what we're profiting from the one tick for us... do you think this makes it a bad point to try to scalp? Or does it make it more likely to get matched as a result? Or probably neither, and it was just a random example. Thanks.

Hi there, what you're saying makes a lot of sense. I'm assuming you have some background in financial markets and the knowledge transfers to betting markets? I'd have to check, but you are you are probably looking at the P&L from Betfair and it's probably imbalanced to the lay side. I pretty much ignore this figure and only focus on the net trade value.

Having my best day scalping so far, never been able to crack this aspect until today. Still using Bet Angel but found another tool that shows me the trend in figures/ticks instead of a graph. For some reason my mind couldn’t react to the graph 😂 (bit like Trump) Just need to understand the data flow fully to kick start my automation

I've seen many 1.01 unmatched lay bets on every horses before the race. One will be match eventually and a back bet will be placed. Will it be matched ? As it might be the winner.

If you are seeing it before the start of race, that's actually lay money. It's value to lay heavily odds on horses in every race, so a little turf war takes place to get those orders in the exchange first and keep those bets over to the inplay period.

can someone explain how Bet Angel gets around the second delay? for example if I place a bet in Betfair and hope it gets matched, the price could move to rapidly in one direction before it gets matched. Also if manually placing a back bet in Betfair at a lower price than the lay price (as you would to hedge your bet in Bet Angel as a stop loss) what stops that bet from getting matched immediately? a lower back bet that is selected in Betfair that is below the current market price would get taken immediately by another trader

There is no delay on pre-off markets, only on in-play markets. On Bet Angel you can reverse the book to offer a bet to the market where it waits to be matched.

Considering how large your stakes are, the return is very small. £128 stake after greening up you get two pounds.

That's more or less how it works. Trading can only ever get a small percentage out of the market. It's a low margin game at this scale.

The position in queue? You can reach that through the ladder settings / columns, where you can add or remove a number of different columns.

The fill rate is a function of the size of your bet and the amount getting matched in the market. So you can't specifically see it. But if you look at the amount getting matched per second that should give you a good rough rule of thumb.

I tend to base my entry on liquidity, so there needs to be enough money being matched for me to feel comfortable. I.e. I can dump my position if I need to. But that period will normally be somewhere between 10-5 minutes out. Then I'm out by 2 mins. Big meetings I'll be active up to 30 minutes out.

You only pay commission on the net outcome of a profitable trade, not on each part.

It works with Betfair and Betdaq only at the moment. Matchbook's commission structure makes it difficult to use in the same way as other exchanges.

what they dont tell you that scalping is profitable only in demo account...when you apply bet angel in real matches..you see that the market balance and you cant scalp effectively..too slow and less volatile...

Aside from the bank you are using, you should ignore any betting liability on either side and just focus on the trade and risk on the trade. I never mention it, because I never look at it.

Backing £128 at 6.0 and laying £128 at 5.9 means yes a £12.80 win if the back bet wins, but if your lay bet wins you lose £2.56, not sure why it's saying that on his calcs and if you factor in the % betfair take then it could be lower... I don't get how this is a profitable strategy???

That's wrong, when you back and lay the profit calcuation would be 128*(6.0-5.9) and that is where your £12.80 profit comes from. Commission in only applied to winning trades.

@@betangeltv If I use a simple back and lay calculator £128 in both fields with your odds 6/5.9 then it shows me £12.80 win if back bet wins and £2.56 loss if lay stake is £128 at those odds due to liability and also the comms will be applied either result.

That's wrong and not how trading works. If you back and lay the same selection you net the profit between the back win and the lay liability, in this case £12.80. Then only the net result is liable for commission. I've, literally, done this trade millions of times.

It's sort of amusing to see a comment like that, just a day after people were congratulating me on a record result at Cheltenham. A lot of my stuff gets recycled and charged for, so I'm happy to release good quality stuff for free. It must annoy people who don't trade for a living and have rely on flogging advice I guess? Most of the stuff on the Academy is free as well and we have free software. It's amusing to think there are still people who can't come to terms with the fact I sit at my desk each week doing this. That in itself should tell others a lot about where you can find an edge in the market. I understand with so many frauds out there people can get confused, but I'll start on year twenty soon on Betfair. That should speak volumes. In contrast, I note there was a deafening silence from other "pro traders" during Cheltenham.

Hi Rufio. I've been on one of Peter's courses (I sadly went too early in my trading 'career' and need to go again - now I've experienced more!) and I have to say that had I followed all the advice that Peter gives - for free - on KZbin, then I'm sure I would be a lot better off than I am at present. BUT - and its a very BIG but, the info you get from one of his trading courses is so much better because you can ask him ANYTHING you like and he will reply to you personally. But to be successful, you MUST listen and you MUST HEAR!!! Sadly, I listened...... My biggest problem, is that I keep going 'inplay'. That's a big no-no. I'm taking a break to address my problem and I will be back and I will attend another of Peter's courses once I re-start my trading career. As for Peter being desperate to sell his software, he mentioned it a couple of times I agree but if you wish to, you can use other software like Geek's Toy etc. Peter's teaching can be adapted to any trading software you care to name!
