While studying scripture, I was shocked to realize the current state of Israel in the Middle East did not fulfill Isaiah 66.8 (“a nation born in a day”) as we’re always told - the context (verses 15-16) is speaking about the day of the Lord which coincides with the physical resurrection of the dead (‘born’ out of the land) which is further elaborated in 26.19. This did not happen in 1948. So if the state in the middle east isn’t biblical Israel, what is it? Isa 1.10, Jer 23.14, Rev 2.9, 11.8, 17.5 comes to mind.

The story as well as the history of Palestine’s name is vague but can be restored from ancient texts. When going back in time, the name Palestine was certainly derived from one of the so-called Sea-Peoples that settled in Pileshet on the eastern Mediterranean coast at the end of the 13th century BC. Pileshet consisted of five Philistine city-states (with kings of) Gat, Ashdod, Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron. The stories of each of these city-states are told in the Bible accompanied with famous individuals such as Samson, David and Goliath. The Philistines were a strong entity and different from their contemporaneous Israelites (later Judah) to the east and bordering to the north with Phoenicia. Numerous excavations of the past 65 years (A. Mazar in 1985) can testify to these geographical regions. However, at the end of the 8th century BC the Philistines were defeated (in 702 BC) by Sennacherib (S. Gitin 1989) and have never regained their ancestral importance since then. Also the Assyrians mention the early name on the Nimrud Slab from around 800 BC. where they called the region "Palashtu/Palastu" or "Pilistu", many centuries after the Aby Hawam Temple (1150 BC) in Egypt had given it the name Pilestim or Pirestim, an issue that is still debated. Even Aristotle mentioned the Lake of Palestine that he describes as what we refer to as the Dead Sea. In fact, Aristotle was right; the Dead Sea is a perennial lake by having no outlet to a sea. The origin of the name Palestine has often be an object of controversies, because it was generally accepted that the name was given by the Romans of the second century AD. Some even named an emperor, Hadrian, who gave Jerusalem the name of Aeolia Capitolina simultaneously being the one who gave the name Palestina referring to the archenemy of 1300 years earlier, the Philistines to the biblical land of Judeah out of disrespect to the Jews who he conquered after Bar Kochba’s revolt in 132 B.C. Nevertheless, besides the fact that Hadrian did not like the revolt in his Provincial Arabia after 106 AD, the name Palestine goes back almost six centuries when Herodotus used it first, something which indicates that Hadrian knew the Greek author of ‘The histories”, i.e. Herodotus. By placing Herodotus in a biblical milieu, Herodotus wrote in 464 BC which is just 120 years after the fall of the First Temple of Jerusalem in 586 BC. That is probably why Herodotus did not mention Jerusalem or its destroyed temple nor did he mention any city in Palestine, with the exception of Ashkelon. Living in the 5th c. BC., Herodotus from Halicarnassus (490/80 -- 430/20 BC) was a Greek historian who wrote his book entitled 'Histories" which originally meant 'Facts' or ‘Stories’ and which was the root for our notion of a consecutive series of natural and human events that took 2 place within a certain time period, now called history. He used the word Palestine Παλαιστίνη five times and Palestinians two times in different chapters of his book; for a total of seven times. Herodotus provided a geopolitical description of the main powers in the fifth century BC when he narrated the wars between the Greeks with its protagonist Athens against Persia or vice versa. Among the many names and topics which Herodotus treated with authority and respect, are the names of countries and peoples and their territories. One of the geographical names that occur five times in Herodotus' work is the name Palestine.
