B52's are just such a great band. They managed to bring a funny touch in the whole underground/alternative genre that sometimes takes itself a little to serious, without being cheep or cheesy. Instead, they are very original and creative with their songwriting.

It is "so silly." But I remember hearing it for the first time, when at a club back then, when it came to the part where everyone got down on the floor...I found myself doing the same. It's truly just a fun and silly song. When at a party, and everyone is too stiff, put this on and turn it up. Then watch and see if they unwind themselves.

So glad you see it for what it is a funny silly song that make you laugh. A few years back I was watching a local metal band and in between songs the guitarist Stated playing that riff and the crowd went nuts . The singer had to announce they did not know the song and the guitarist played it just to fill in between songs. The boos that followed and the look the singer gave the guitarist said it all LOL

B-52s are awesome and fun. Ricky actually was self taught on guitar and he setup was bonkers but really works for holding those gooves. Kate provides the base on the keyboards. They didn't use a base guitar until years later. Singing wise I would say Give Me Back My Man is the most interesting. Cindy is incredible on it.
@silverlobo213510 ай бұрын
Hello Beth While on the surface (pun intended) it is "so silly and fun". it has musical depth (pun intended again). As you described the various vocal requirements and the intrinsic 'catchiness' (pun again) of the riff, drums, and instrumentals gives the song its lasting value. Unless I have been mistaking the lyrics for years, "Rock Lobster" is basically about a group of people at a beach party (as most people in the 50's and 60's did). Someone run into a 'rock' that turns out to be a lobster, both in the water and under the dock. The third verse is either someone in scuba gear or the lobster itself.4th and 5th verse are a depiction of the underwater world. Verse 6th (longest verse) is about back on land, the young adults are having a cookout and party on the beach, considering what the other 'under the sea creatures' that people might see there and the 'noises' they might make there. "Rock Lobster" is a fun summer beach fun song. Song with a "catchy" beat / riff to keep the party fun and interesting. Most people just like to eat, the good beat to listen, and dance to it. They don't really care about the lyrics. The majority, after many years of listening to it, probably could tell you fully what it is about.))

BTW, when they get to the "Down, down, down" part, everyone on the dance floor had to sink until they were lying on the floor and then get back up when the music restarted, sort of like with "Time Warp" from "The Rocky Horror Picture Show". Damn, I just made myself sad with all these memories that will never come again. LOL You had way too much fun with this one and I enjoyed watching you do it. Brought back good memories. 🙂

You mention Ricky Wilson as the bass guitarist, but he was actually both bass and lead guitar--on the same guitar. He would string his guitar with regular strings up top and bass strings at the bottom so he could pluck both simultaneously. At 5:58 you can see this clearly--two strings on top, two on bottom, with a gap between them.

It was late in my college years when the B-52s hit the national scene. We had really serious punk and punk-like and new wave bands like Elvis Costello and the Sex Pistols. We were starting to see the end of the tunnel of disco. Metal bands with big hair were hitting it big and people took them very seriously. And then the B-52s jumped in amidst all of this and made going to hear music and dancing SO FUN. We danced in apartments and dormitories and bars with huge smiles on our faces until we were exhausted. And then we danced some more and then we went home and fell asleep. So deliciously fun.

Actually, when they were students, the drummer used to borrow the lead guitarist's guitar and would break strings but was too broke to replace them. Cindy's brother replaced them with bass guitar guitar strings, so initially they did not have a bass guitarist, they didn't need one 😊 and he could play these unique sounding riffs on his guitar Also "going down, down, down" meant going down to the bottom of the sea, where they encounter all of these fish. This,was inspired by an early 1960s dance trend of "going low" to sone R&B songs. The name of the song was inspired by sunbathers at the beach, laying on the tocks and turning red as lobsters! Another note, After John Lennon heard this song on the radio, and learned that the band said that it was an homage to Yoko Ono, it inspired him to start recording again.
