What I love about Sinead, and what she demonstrates so perfectly here, is how she dedicates her whole being to the song. Not just her voice, but her hands, her eyes, the curl of her lips, her whole body is a medium for emotion, not just her vocal cords.

Prince may not have realized it when he wrote this song but he wrote it for her. No other rendition ever has come close to the emotion she pours into this song. I'm a 56 year old tough guy and I have never not once listened to her version without at least one tear coming to my eye.

She was asked in an interview a few years ago if she still liked performing this song, and what does she think while singing it to summon emotion. She said she never gets tired of it. And it reminds her of her mom who died tragically in a car accident when Sinead was only 18. Amazing. If one watches her expression when she sings the line "all those flowers you planted in the backyard, momma; All died when you went away...." I think you can see a flood of emotion inside her as she pictures her mom.

She’s the first voice that ever just made me go through a range of emotion and the hair stand up on my neck. It killed me the shit she got over ripping up the picture of the pope. Even when they knew about the abuse she received and her true statement. Now she’s gone and people never heard her struggle and statement. Now they use words like legend and talk about how she stood up for women’s rights. The same people that dropped her from her label and booed her off stage love her now. She was always a beautiful soul and voice and she don’t want tears from hypocrites. She was too strong to “let the bastards get her down” and don’t want their sympathy now. I was a life long fan and listened to what she said and the reasons behind the bold statements she made. She was a warrior fighting against abuse. As she sang to a crowd of boos. “Untill the basic human rights Are equally guaranteed to all Without regard to race Then we say "war" !She didn’t shy away. She doubled down and yes she is a legend.

If the music wasnt on the top lists it was some work to find out what you liked. But somehow I found The Lion and The Cobra and was complete hooked. Sinead was the same age as me. I saw her live, but sadly she didn't sing any of her older songs. She was still incredible even though the material she was singing wasn't as iconic. One thing you notice here is how she uses her whole body to sing, like jumping forces air through her voice in a unique way. She moves her head away from the mic deliberately to drop suddenly. It's intentionally broken and sloppy. You are so right that she is fully in control every second.

I think I watch this video once a month, when I need to feel. Literally. 1 other video only somehow brings me to the same level of music-video emotional feel: Joe Cocker - with a little help from my friends at Woodstock (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpevqn5oebuJi7c) Here ! Saved you the trip ! :-) . Different genre of course, but it just makes the same vibration into my soul. Joe's shout at 5'59 resonates the same in me as Sinead's here at 4'09 and 4'38. Don't get me wrong, I love another 100+ music videos ( LP - one more light / Eagles - Lying eyes / Ben Harper - The drugs don't work...) but these 2 are just so special to me and can never get old. Seen all of the aforementioned artists live, aside from Sinead:-(

When this song came out - what a wonderful, beautiful, amazing risk to take with that film clip - to lock off a face and just let the humanity of it ... The face, the voice - create the wonder , the emotion, the pain. If you can't feel it when you see that film clip, then you're not alive. In an era where the fast-cut film clip was coming into vogue, as Beth says here, Sinead was fearless. That's art - not just throwing in a profanity for shock effect. Being truly risky and different. That's artistry.

I always love her music & she has the voice of an angel.. Im 37 & has listened to this song for 30 years..but i still has goosebumps all over me everytime i hear this song. My ONLY regret is that i never had any opportunity to see her live in concert. note: i know this comment is 2 years late, but if u read this Beth, did u get any opportunity to see the Taylor Swift Eras Tour? Coz i would really love to hear ur thought about the tour of this century..😊😊 ❤❤❤

I bought the album when it came out and Troy hit my like a brick off a skyscraper. A friend told me I would like it and him owning a CD store in a college town, he knew what he was talking about. I listened to Troy so many freaking times. I would play it in my car before I went into work. Play it again as soon as I got back out. That album is one of the best first albums ever made imo. She won a ton of awards for The Lion and the Cobra, but as a female singer I felt she never got the respect she deserved for it and the several chart toppers that were released after.

What I like from her aside of her talent and her brave is her stage style. She likes to jumping and bare footed. Even now when she already wear hijab, her stage style still not change. Jumping with feeling when singing and barefooted :D She still being her self! Plus her voice is still as great as before although she is already more than 50s yo. Love her.

Emotion comes thru the voice most of all when it is pushed to the edge of the singer's ability to control it.

That gig was in my city, Santiago de Chile, to celebrate the end of Pinochet’s regime. Amnesty held a great 2 nights show called “un canto a la esperanza”. She was so good at stage and activism activities those days they all were here. I Will remember her here forever

I would love to hear you reacting to Sinead- Jackie. I'm always disappointed by people going on about 'nothing compares to you'. This song definitely pales into mediocrity compared to Sinead singing lyrics that she's written herself from her own heart such as 'three babies' 'thank you for hearing me' and 'jackie'

Ouff... Just seconds into her singing gave me a lump in my throat and teary eyes 😢 This song opens the floodgates and happy childhood memories comes to mind. I don't know why it does that to me, but I don't complain ❤️

I really wished that she had shown up for Roger Waters The Wall in Germany many years ago, but they did play her taped segment. Her voice was perfect for the song. She put perfect emotion into it.

I could listen to any version performed by Sinead; the later ones are so full of emotion and pain.
