Mariah used to do demos for producers before she was a teenager walking up and down NY. She knew what she wanted to do. When she got her record deal her one clause was that she didn’t have to sing other people’s songs anymore. That’s why she’s so successful and owns her own masters. We don’t deserve such a talent. People really don’t get it.

OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!! Mariah Carey is my FAVORITE artist ever!!!! and ive been watching you since your beyonce journey I wouldve NEVER expected this OMGGGG!! If Butterfly and Daydream werent your style but you enjoyed this then try out her 2000s work. I think the best thing to listen to after this would be the album that came after E=MC2. It's the follow up to this album and the title literally stands for Emancipation = Mariah Carey squared and it's a really fun album! EDIT: Finished the reaction so glad you enjoyed it here are my album recommendations from Mariah in SWIFTIE language! -E=MC2(2008) if you just want to have a fun time with a lot of bops listen to this one the Taylor equivalent would be like Lover in that its just generally happy and fun -Memoirs of an imperfect angel(2009) FOR HER SONGWRITING this album really has it all! The storytelling is amazing and swiftie to swiftie this album is like her reputation its all about the DRAMA but also kind of like folklore in that most of the songs are fiction or stories from her friends. -Charmbracelet(2002) another album with amazing songwriting. She was going through a lot while making this album and this was her healing album. If you want to get sad but occasionally bop and get uplifted this one is for you. Think of like depressing red lyrics but 2000s R&B or Gracie Abraham whispery vocals but with Mariah runs. -Caution(2018) her most recent album (shes apparently recording a new album right now though) this one was what got me into her. It's a lot more recent so you might connect with the sounds here a lot more! It's also really short and has a ton of fun songs but also a cool late-night vibe. It's like if midnights was an R&B album.

So I used to be meh about Mariah but my husband who’s a bit older (same age as MC) really gave me a lot of the insights into the parts of her life as they coincided with her albums and they make you appreciate them even more. This album coming after her movie flop and mental breakdown and Charmbracelet where she didn’t really siiiiiiiing like she used to, it was huge for her long time fans. She was not only emancipating herself on the dance floor, but it’s really about her saying she’s tired of the haters and everything and she’s just gonna do whatever she wants because she can. And she was finally SINGING again. Fabulous. Also: the bass player on this album is Randy Jackson. Yes, THAT Randy Jackson. He has been playing for Mariah since the beginning of her career. Similarly Butterfly came right after her very public divorce from her ex who essentially treated her like property. She wasn’t allowed to tap into her black side in her music because the label wouldn’t let her. So Butterfly was her finally being allowed to do the music she wanted to, embrace her black side, and again, be free to venture into the sound she really wanted to do from the beginning. I highly recommend trying that one again with that context - it honestly makes me cry thinking about her in that time and how liberating that album was for her. Loved watching this and seeing Mariah get the love she truly deserves 🙌🙌🙌

This album started off in the club, and ended up in church. Mariah fans are VERY familiar with her ability to have you MIGRATE your way emotionally from one to the other. Welcome to the Mariah Rabbit Hole. I was a fan of hers since I first heard Vision of Love in the summer of 1990 and thought "oh wow, Whitney's new song is fire!!" Had no idea until I saw the video that it wasn't Whitney Houston singing that song, but some new girl named Mariah Carey. And it was a done deal from there. She ruled the 90s. Her music was the soundtrack of my childhood. I'd say her powerhouse vocals were in that first decade of her career. She was already a great lyricist, since she wrote and co-produced every song on her debut album. But she truly came into her own in the 2000s, when she started experimenting more with her sound, and her voice changing over the years as a result of all that work she put in. If this was more your cup of tea than her earlier stuff, I recommend her three albums from that time period that I believe you'd enjoy: E=MC2, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, and Caution. That being said...the 90s kid in me would be remiss in not telling you that you're doing yourself a great disservice by not going through a journey of her catalog from the beginning. :) Enjoy, and looking forward to your next one!
