I'm in my early 20's. My grandfather is almost 90, he still lives in his house with his wife. He still does handcrafts, goes to the forest to pick berries, drives a car, skiis in the winter, and chops firewood. Is he as good as he once was? No, but he still lives in every sense of the world. From what I've heard from my parents, in his 70's he would still annihilate almost anyone in terms of cardiovascular fitness and general usefulness as well. People: live a healthy and physically active life, and by the time you are 60, you still have a full third or more of your life ahead. Fuck everyone with a "gotta live while I'm still young" -mentality. I will live, truly live into my 90's. My life won't end at marriage. By the time the last kid I'll have leaves the nest I'll barely have passed the halfwaypoint, and I will make myself an important part of the childhoods of my GREAT grandchildren.

My boomer story happened last week . I was pressing 90 lb dbs on a flat bench ( which I can for about 10-12 ) and I noticed this dude starring at me.from the corner of my eye. So I go for the 100s to try out I think surely I can bang a few reps out but nope. I couldn't get past the lock out . So I put them down. This guy then thought he had a green light to give all kind of advice on angles and shit for lefting heavy. He then proceeded to back to his work out where he was pressing 15 lb db. He was also fat and looked completely out of shape.

There’s a pudgy fat guy I once came across in my gym in Bangladesh. He’s 29 so around a year or so older than me. You can tell he only returned to the gym fairly recently and is one of those guys who trains to look good for weddings, holidays and etc. He felt that his statement that it goes downhill after marriage applied to me and told me I’d struggle to hold onto my training thereafter lol. The low standards and the weakness of mind in the thinking that goes behind that is laughable and pathetic. With all the relationships and experiences I’ve had in my life, out of 13yrs of lifting I only had 2yrs when I was out and almost half that due to the pandemic. Never listen to the weak- determine your OWN future.

I'm reminded of these things every day. Being a 21 year old working in a skilled trade (Electrician), I'm surrounded by men 10 to 30 years my senior. Several of them were athletic in their 20s, and played sports at the collegiate level. This is interesting to me, but they are some of the most bitter people I have ever met. All of the tropes about marriage and physical abilities you espouse are on display in spades with these dudes. I listen to them talk about their glory days when they were fucking women and didn't have kids and it just is a mystery to me how someone could be so bitter about their own existence.

It’s ironic because you sound bitter yourself. Certain groups just have a culture of complaining about specific topics as a pastime. Some take it more seriously than others. People under 25 or so identify with their age demographic in a self important/ blaming way. Like dude, you’re in your prime and still complaining. Imagine how you’ll be in a few short years.

Your point about being a dad and marriage really resonated with me. When my kids came along I had to train even harder because time was severely limited, so I had to squeeze every bit of juice out of what little time I had. Factor in the sense of purpose that comes with the realisation that you are obliged to sustain your presence to be there for your wife and children. The net result was the most profound gains I have ever experienced in my life. Love this video NH. It hit me quite hard man

This was a very interesting video. It is pretty cool the way you blend philosophy and bodybuilding together. You never cease to surprise me in your psychological dismantling of why people do/say certain things. This video reminded me of a man named Jack LaLanne. A true boomer, but not a bad boomer. I believe he was one of the first people to promote weight-lifting for health, causing contention among the medical community for "risk of heart attacks and loss of sex drive", he reported. He lived till the age of 96, and from what I've read, it did not seem he ever needed someone to wipe his own buttocks. There is hope. The antithesis of the boomers you describe here. Like you've said before, many of the sorrows in people can be tied to a lack of physical development. Jack thought similar. He believed having a physical culture could rejuvenate society. Interesting to conceptualize. You said that if everyone lifted, maybe there would be less wars. The previous idea reminds me of that. It's sad that the fitness culture now is heavily monetized, and the industry loves to make people feel weak and insecure so they buy products/services thinking they'll help. So much confusion. Not what Jack envisioned, I imagine. Too many points, so I'll leave it at that. Appreciate you, NH, your channel has been massively helpful and very motivational. Really. Probably my most frequent and fav channel and has been keeping me going. Hopefully, I'm not a fanboy when I say this, but: I think you are doing Jack's work, so to speak. I hope you live long, and live strong

@Daniel-td9op
@Daniel-td9op 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry brother, but that last bit is nonsense. One could turn your argument and say that that's just a coward's way out of the misfortunes of this life and a terrible example for future generations. No man that lived his life properly will ever be a dead weight to his loved ones simply because his inherent value far outweighs whatever invalidity he may be affected with. At least be a man and say that you are doing it for yourself only. I remember my grandfather, in my view a man's man, worked all his life, past retirement, until he couldn't anymore. Close to death he needed help to do the most basic things, and I remember my father and his brothers almost fighting between them if someone took the turn of the other. This was how much he was loved. In the hospital, a day before death, he comforted them with these words: "A vida só é boa quando é vivida." "Life is only good when it's worth living." Yes, he felt like you, me, and any other male, but what was the alternative? Say to his children that once life gets hard you quit? If you get a stroke at 45 and permanent sequelae, you just go and die? What about mental health? If you have a crippling mental disease at 25, no job, woman or kids? If the father of such a young man choose this way when life got difficult, what are the chances of this man following a different path? Or disability is only worth of giving up if it's physical and you are old? The sad thing is that I think your answers are "yes", "yes", "few" and "no". This is akin to the death cult promoted by steroid users. In a video about the legacy to future generations, is this the final message you want to give?
@NaturalHypertrophy
@NaturalHypertrophy 2 жыл бұрын
Key words: "No man that lived his life properly will ever be a dead weight to his loved ones." That doesn't concern the Boomers I describe in this video. Beyond that point, it's a matter of personal preference: regardless of how much people around me would want me to hang around, if I decide I am past my expiration date then I will leave. Those who feels otherwise are not worse, only different. As for your last paragraph, you're off topic, which I believe is the result of you getting emotional after remembering your grandpa (something I can relate to). You compare something temporary or surmountable (illness, depression, handicaps) to the permanence of old age debilitation. These are not the same thing, but I'm sure you know that.

Anyways we get to the squat rack and he's a big believer in his old man strength, whatever that is, but I squat more than him. AS SOON as I got done with my set of squats he looks around frantically then turns to me and tells "I used to squat that plus two plates more" and I'm not even trained at this point for legs, was just doing bodyweight squats previously, and I also don't like to be negative prefer to be the better man, so I just tell him "oh nice, good" Lmao. I can relate to this, you don't feel like you've changed but the world does and before you know it you feel out of place. Rebelling against that, rather than embracing it and trying to be useful and understand your place in the world is where I feel some of this bitterness comes into it. There's a guy in my gym who's very much a boomer even though he's in his early 30s. Talks about how he used to lift more in the past but 'messed up his knees', basically only does pressing movements whenever I see him, and talks about how you 'never want to be near him' on his leg day because of how dangerous he is... To this day I've never seen him train his legs.
@LDarlong
@LDarlong 3 жыл бұрын
He has amassed immense knowledge about leg training that his efficiency is beyond comprehension. He can effectively train every muscle fiber in his legs whilst simultaneously creating new ones and recovering before he even starts the work out. He’s at a point where other people’s leg gains are transferred to his legs automatically and that is why you don’t want to get near him. I know all this because… I am he who you speak of.

"Respect your elders" is an old old old saying from way back when it actually took effort to survive long enough to be an elder. If someone lived a long ass time a thousand years ago, it was a real accomplishment, because everything in the natural world was trying to kill you, and everything in the human world was trying to kill you too. Now you have these idiot boomers who never worked a real job because their parents left them enough real estate they could rent it out and survive their whole life without lifting a finger, and they demand respect. They never struggled, they never fought, they have no idea what its like to live without their massive privilege. They are not entitled to respect.

This reminds me of a guy I meet at the gym back in 2018. He was maybe 5'7 (I'm 5'11) and three to four years older than me. The first thing he told me was "I used to be huge" or "I was so huge back in the days". A couple of minutes later he needed me to spot him when doing 44 lb dumbbells on a flat bench. He also spoke a lot about creatine monohydrate, and tried to force me to try it because it would "make me as huge as him". And the funny thing is, as you mention in the video, is that he was creeping on women. He was married and had one child, but everytime he entered the locker room he would remove his wedding ring and then go out to the gym and creep on women instead of lifting. Luckily, in Sweden we have something called "womens gym", meaning that women have their own seperate section to train in that only they can access via their gym-cards. So most of the women he creeped on would flee to their separate section. When he wasn't creeping on them he was instead asking me details about my sex-life. Calling me "kid" or "boy" despite me being 23 years old and only somewhat younger than him. Now I have a word for his kind thanks to you NH. What a boomer!

They like to occupy machines all the time, but when it comes to bench they usually handle between a plate and plate&a half. They don't waste time talking shit, they just go in and train, though their legs look terrible and they never seem to improve, but hey at least they're putting in the work. So when it comes to "walking the walk", they can actually pull it off in their own way. When they work in, they keep to themselves, help you load the bar and they're good spotters too.
