You would have to not have a heart to not feel Bette's hurt that night, I cried the first time I saw this, then watched the Peter Allen tribute she did, then that broke me, cried again, she got to me.

The truth is, performance can carry you along on top of your emotions. You can be inches from collapse and the force of performance can hold off the edge. You don't want to disappoint the folks in the audience. You want them to feel your emotions not be drowned by them. So swallow that knot in your throat and keep belting it out.

The best I ever saw Bette midler was 1972 at the capital theater in Passaic, nj. That's when she was still born in Paterson, nj, just over the mountain from Passaic. And Melissa Manchester was the lead harlette, trashing it up with the divine miss m. A shamed they both abandoned these personalities and becam vanilla and mainstream.

@YoyoMammogram no she does not. she started out singing cabaret at the continental bathhouse in NY, got the nickname "Bathhouse Betty" and was a big hit on the gay scene, and obviously being in showbiz had a lot of gay friends. she did a lot of aids benefits and charity work. she has said that the people she started out with are nearly ALL dead from aids now and its a cause close to her heart.

Troy, you got that right, if Bette's tears don't stir your emotions, & make you cry, their is definitely something wrong, it really takes someone without a conscience or empathy that can't cry when they see her cry.

To Britney Spears, Madonna, Ashlee Simpson and Avril Lavigne: Take note, Miss M has more talent in her pinky toe than any of you have in your own body. This woman is THE consumate entertainer. You MUST see her live in concert. She will take you from laughing hysterically to sobbing your eyes out within a second. Bette truly is the last of the true entertainers. May she live forever.
