I remember this song so well. Bette, and Barry Manilow, were early favorites in the gay community, and this was a happy song when it was released. But, the naivete' of the 70's was replaced by the nightmare of the 80's, and early 90's. It was at that time, that a lot of us had no family to turn to , only friends. That is why this song has so much meaning to those of us who made it through those dark times.

That's sad that some people didn't have family and only friends. I had my family, but, no friends, all my friends were at the town I went to college , four hours away, so, I was lucky in that I had my family to turn to.

Nope, Buzzy Linhart and Moogy Klingman;' "Friends" of Bette's before she made it big, they both recorded and released it in 1971. Bette sat in one night and sang it with Buzzy; she took it on and took off after that.

No, I like Bette's version. I don't remember the beginning of the song. My 2 year old grandson watches Shrek all the time, and I thought Eddie Murphy voicing Donkey was just making that part up and it really drives me nuts when I hear it. He's watching it right now, so I decided in crazy mode to see if the lyrics were really part of the song, and lo and behold!! They are!!!!!! So, wanted to hear Bette sing it, since I knew she sang it and remember her doing so, but, I guess I never paid attention to the very beginning of the song. Sorry to be so long winded. :(
