I'm using shredded cardboard in my container garden and go create a raised bed on top of clay. Surely it would work in a worm bed as well. I get ALL the cardboard I need my garden from my local Babcock furniture stores. I cut out panels which fit my shredder, about 8" wide. Then I stick these strips out in the yard at the edge of my patio when it rains. Get them good and wet, then pull the layers apart. Next I hang these long strips on a regular drying rack for clothes. It only takes about 2 hours for them to dry. Next I shredd them in my electric shredder. Bag this in huge trash bags to take to my garden. This is an easier way to get the worm bin bedding cardboard. I had a hugely successful garden last year, thanks to shredded cardboard. I also used cardboard A. in large flat sheets under my pallets in the garden B. In strips for all the spaces between rows in the garden to kill weeds C. Large flat sheets laid directly on top of clay ground to break up the heavy soil. inviting worms to come work for me D. As a thick mulch for my entire garden, the shredded cardboard mixed with pinestraw and sticks and leaves. E. At the bottom of contractor bags which I used as grow bags in the garden. To retain moisture for my crops, also serve as a way to get worms to stay.

This video was what made all the difference between the failure of my first attempt at vermiculture and the success of my second attempt. It was specifically your mention of pine shavings that did it. A nearby business makes pine poles for decorative fencing. They sell their lathe shavings to supplement their income from the poles. I bought a big bale of shavings that will surely last me 10 years. All the bedding I make now is 60% shavings and 40% shredded brown cardboard. The shaving make the bed airy and springy, avoiding the dense compacted mat that killed my first batch of worms. Many thanks for all the work you do, and for sharing that work with us!

Have to subscribe to someone who recognizes that cardboard is a resource. You are really adept with that cutting knife.

Excellent video. I've been using cardboard in my compost pile for years. i also recycle all of our vegetable scraps as well as egg cartons and shells. The worms love it. I also shred all of our paper bags, newspaper, flyers and junk mail and add it to the pile as well. I also did a test with coated cardboard. as long as it's not the kind that is used for refrigerated/ freezer items it will break down.

I use a bagger mower to run over soaked cardboard. Sometimes I add small sticks to help keep the mash flowing. It helps to make bedding for goats chickens and worms. Food waste and flies houses are the next step

Wow this is a great gardening hack plus reducing trash. Awesome lesson in repurposing used cardboard. Thank you ❤

I, too, find it therapeutic and addictive to turn corrugated cardboard boxes into worm bedding. My process is a little different from yours. I cut it up with scissors and keep it in a big sack until needed. If the worm bin is a bit more moist than it should be or if I'm adding some especially moist food, I mix in some new dry bedding. Otherwise, especially when I've just harvested the castings and am putting a whole batch of new bedding into the bin, I spritz it with spray bottle of water and let the moisture soak into it.

I heard of someone who used a garden shredder to cut up the cardboard into small pieces, once strips were done! Of course, you need a shredder, but I don’t have little children to rip u the pieces, and have arthritis in my thumbs so the ripping bit would be impossible. I’ll let you know if it works! Our wormery is newish, but listening to your video has been really useful to hopefully make it more productive. Thank you

Any thoughts on the inks on the cardboard? I’m aware that most of it may be soybean based, but with the gmo and glyphosate aspect, I’m not so positive about it. I haven’t been able to find any data/answers. Also with most products coming from overseas, what about the pesticide treatment before entering country? Also not too keen on putting something from China into my garden. I have been using cardboard in garden, but have been reducing that based on the what if’s.

Where I work there’s papers that I have to shred. Then I throw the shredded paper in the school’s recycle bins. I was wondering if the paper with printer ink on it can I use the in my raised beds?

Make sure you don’t mistakenly use cedar shavings/leaves. They’re apparently have anti microbial properties. Worms feast on Fungi and bacterias.

Ask a doctor about the damage being done to the kids wrists . I understand there must be some cutting with scissors or a utility knife and even this is bad . But get a few shedders and the little kids will love that and not damage there wrists . I did so much ripping I had to have two surgeries .

I saw a video where a lady used crumbled & torn up pieces of paper to fill the bottom portion ofher container for planting seeds. Said the ink is soy based non-toxic. Shredded paper uses alot of electricity. I think balling up used paper makes more sense

Occasional tearing? It’s not like these kids have a full-time job of tearing.

You would have to purchase a individual shredder, because shredders only last about 15 minutes before burning out.

The idea of a "time out" is different from a punishment for willfully bad behavior. It is for when a child is overstimulated and needs to be calmed down. Punishment is generally counterproductive in that case.
