I think Jimmy was irritated with Howard falling apart after “one little setback” as Jimmy put it. Jimmy’s whole life has been nothing but setbacks
@toamatau87853 жыл бұрын
He's mad at Howard because of his "real" reaction to Chuck's death. Chuck was Howard's very dear friend and his death, as well as the fallout of Jimmy's insurance meddling, tore him apart. In contrast Jimmy's last interaction with Chuck was Chuck saying he never cared about Jimmy which hurt Jimmy more than the actual death. So he sees all these people who Chuck actually respected and cared for upset by his death and Jimmy doesn't "get to do" that because of his relationship with Chuck when he really has more "right" than anyone. He's once again been left as the outsider and he hates that. Howard is an easy target for him. This carries into S5 where Howard has confronted his grief and grown as a person while Jimmy has hardly acknowledged he's in pain at all. Jimmy resents this.

The real magic is what Howard didn’t say. Following “Fuck you, Jimmy” is the implicit “I’m an amazing lawyer.” It’s like the feeling of “no one shit talks my country but me.” Howard was surrounded by yes men. He needed someone to reignite him. He was probably thinking to himself over and over again that he was a shitty lawyer. When Jimmy says it, it reminded him that he was just in a bad situation. The confident Howard we see in 607 saying he’ll overcome anything and land on his feet is the direct result of this scene.

It's funny because early in the series Howard is kind of tailored to be perceived as a villain and an antagonistic character. There is a line in the 1st or 2nd series where Howard says something to Jimmy like "It's not always about the money, it's about what's in your heart" and the impression one gets at the time given how Howard carries himself and how he is portrayed is that he is being smarmy and mocking Jimmy. As we learn more about Howard and his character is fleshed out as a decent, if pompous individual, I think back to that line and believe that he probably meant every word. At this point in the show, it's not really clear what Jimmy thinks of Chuck but you can tell what he says to Howard is parroting his brother. Does Jimmy say this to genuinely help Howard? Does he feel guilty Chuck isn't around and tries to replicate what he would say to make up for it? Or is it just another opportunity for Jimmy to be a performer and impersonate someone he's not? This whole season had so much uncertainty. Really love what the show has become.
@IgiWhiteman4 жыл бұрын
I strongly disagree. Chuck would never say something like this to Howard and definitely not in that manner. He never cared about how people feel, all he cared about were impressions. He never said the things people needed to hear at the moment. If Chuck was around and healthy (both mentally and physically) at this point, he´d take full cotrol over the firm and sideline Howard. Jimmy is different. Deep down, he´s a good guy who feels guilt and has conscience. That´s why when he sees Howard so low, he remember the good Howard did for him and tries to get him back on his feet.

As his choice of words shows, he definitely doesn’t see Howard as a friend but he has at least enough respect for him to bring him to salvage what’s left of the firm. As the guy above said, he took a quick moment to remember what good Howard did for him. Howard was a straight up dick to Jimmy during Season 1, and in Season 2 he treated Kim badly due to Jimmy messing up at Davis and Maine. I realize Howard was actually being a dick to Jimmy on behalf of Chuck in Season 1, but he was still complicit, and honestly Howard had more control of HHM at that point (although due to Howard’s reverence for Chuck he sided with him). None of that justifies how Jimmy treated Howard in seasons 5 and especially 6, but I’m not surprised that Jimmy doesn’t think all that fondly of him. Season 6 spoilers below: I really feel like this is the moment that helped turn Howard around. He is the lowest he has ever been and it's quite ironic that Jimmy was the push for Howard to turn his life around. Which makes events of season 6 all the more painful, because Howard got put down by the same guy that lifted him up.

There's something outside all the components. More than the sum of its parts kinda thing. More than the writing, acting, pacing, camera work, lighting, production design. More than all of it. I just keep watching scenes from this show even though in so many ways a scene like this would be mundane, possibly even boring in any other context.

The short pause is what ties it together. It like Howard can't believe what Jimmy just said and needs a moment to process before saying fuck you

Jimmy indeed is fundamentally sleazy and he owns it, but Jimmy does react here exactly the way I would react to the same situation. The solution to ANY business that is in the process of implosion by external factors and by a system that does not want that business, is to insist on itself and its worthy nature, and Fight Back. The system will always not-want those that help the small. The system would rather the small kill themelves. No. We have to stand up and say no.

Such a great scene between such talented men. And it always raised an interesting question for me. Who is tougher? Jimmy who seemingly has no remorse even though he played a key part in his brother's demise OR Howard who takes all the blame and pulls through. Insane series.
@coolguy05190 Жыл бұрын
Howard without a doubt, Jimmy has remorse, it's there all the time, he just projects it into everything else, like the time the bar almost didn't accept him where he projected onto Kim, or the whole lightning bolts speech. Howard got hit hard, but he didn't bottle up all those emotions and he didnt have any more baggage after some seasons

@@zekeiwa5837 Howard is still a professional, as a socially capable person and as a lawyer surrounded by witnesses he knows an argument wouldn't help anything - this is that yes or no answer he's been waiting around for. He's come out the other end of his crisis with this "namaste" thing going which tries to avoid confrontation, and he's smart enough (and a professional arguer) to know Jimmy isn't arguing *for* anything he's just ranting.

scenes like that are the reason why it made zero sense in show how Jimmy later went on this warpath to utterly destroy Howards life. He actually liked him, admired him especially after he found out it was Chuck all along. That never made any sense.

I love this scene for Jimmy this is the greatest moment of his life. sure he’s not a lawyer which is what he really wants, but he’s making plenty of money for the time being and he is on top of the world. Whereas Hmm and by extension Howard are doing awful they aren’t making money they are “right sizing” which is just a polite way of saying downsizing and Howard is in the shits. So jimmy just rubs his boot heal in just a little bit and the funny thing is Howard always called jimmy “Charlie hustle” said he was a great worker, but never let him be a lawyer. So I’m a way jimmy is saying to Howard exactly how he thinks Howard sees him. It’s brilliant
