@@dog-eared6991 It's a little bit of both, but Mike could never hate Gus as much as Gus hates Eladio. Mike is by Gus' side until the very end, and even rushes back to get rid of Walt as soon as he hears about Gus' demise. You think Gus is gonna jump up and help Eladio? Nah, the exact opposite happened. So there's levels to hatred, but there's also a mutual respect between Gus and Mike. Almost like an everyday Employee/Employer relationship where they get on each other's nerves, but at the end of the day work perfectly together and benefit from each other. The implication that Howard committed suicide in an open, serene, and scenic place when in reality he’s buried in an unmarked dark shallow hole under the lab with his murderer is just fucking depressing.

As we see from the pictures at the memorial service (taken from Patrick Fabians own Instagram) Howard was outdoorsy sometimes so that spot for suicide would not be out of place. Perfect frame up once again. And the police have zero suspicions, aren't going to anything. The whole possibility brushed aside by one line from Mike.

I love how when Kim breaks up with Jimmy. It's not "this was all your fault" or "you were a bad influence on me." Kim recognized that she was just as responsible for everything as Jimmy was. And then saying "you were his wife, you would have known" - knowing they were estranged and not sleeping together or getting along. Twisting the corkscrew and making Cheryl feel the weight of guilt. Kind of like how Jimmy let Howard sit with the blame for chucks suicide. But Kim is even more brutal and more gut wrenching. Jimmy talks of his jealousy for Howard, using actual truth and people's emotional connection to the truth, to manipulate people. Kim uses lies to manipulate and the truth to try to set herself free, or punish herself.

Jimmy says in the beginning of the episode that one day they'll wake up and realize they haven't thought about all the bad stuff that happened. That lines up with the cut from Kim and Jimmy breaking up to him living as Saul Goodman full time. He woke up and didn't think about Kim at all, being Saul Goodman is his way of coping with losing everyone he cared about. Brilliant writing. Mr Varga also reminds us not to confuse justice with revenge. So if justice is to be done though the heavens fall -- what is justice here?? Or is justice ever done? When Chuck says it he believes it. When Jimmy says it it's him using it as a shiny tag line in his tacky facade as a lawyer. If chucks belief and use of that line was true blue (or true golden) then Jimmy's use of that line is as gold plating, looks like the real thing on the outside but the facade is shallow and covers up the junk

How abruptly it cuts from Jimmy’s argument with Kim to Saul in his lavish mansion, waking aside a hooker, is so well done. No time to process. No time to know what happened. The viewer is firmly in Saul’s shoes. No closure (at least yet). Unanswered questions. So many. And it’s perfect. I wouldn’t have it any other way. It is so befitting of Saul and this show’s tone to go “yup, this traumatizing life event happened. Saul and Kim ruined a man’s career, got him tragically and pointlessly murdered, and broke up. So anyways; Better Call Saul! Haha!!”

@@PikesvilleAl also I have to completely disagree. What would they put in between those two? Kim would leave, and that’s about it. We don’t need a bunch of montages of Jimmy dealing with it. That’s not the kind of person he is anymore. Someone else in the comments said “we can draw a straight line from Kim leaving Jimmy, to Jimmy fully becoming Saul as a method of coping with everything he’s lost.” I think many people forget how sad Jimmy is deep down. Saul isn’t sad. Jimmy is. Saul was born out of Jimmy’s desire to shove down his emotions and his heart. Jimmy wouldn’t have to take the beating of life. Saul could take it for him. Giving the viewer nothing to see, nothing to grasp, just jumping immediately, puts us in Jimmy’s shoes. He didn’t take time to compartmentalize. He didn’t take time to grieve. In his own words, he woke up one day and realized he didn’t think about it at all. Any of it. He shoved it all down and fully became Saul Goodman. A sleazy, filthy facade over the face of a good hearted, troubled man.

Gus's wine scene was great. Complete flip on what we've seen from him more generally. The fact he sits there clearly contemplating his past, and Max's death, and then abruptly leaves, shows that he can never really get close to anyone again. I love the collective knowledge and passion from the fans of BCS. This is how well they have narrowed down the timeline jump. This is copied from the wikia: "After the time jump, as Saul is driving into his office, it is stated in the radio that the S&P 500 rose by 5 points the prior day. If you narrow down this period to November 1, 2004 - November 30, 2005 (based on the license plate expiring in November, 2005), the only day the S&P 500 rose by exactly 5 points is February 10, 2005. Therefore, the next day when he’s driving into work would be February 11, 2005." So that would be 33 weeks (8 months) after Kim left and still almost 4½ years until Saul meets Walt and just over 5 years before Saul becomes Gene.

I've been thinking for ages now about exactly when and how Jimmy was fully going to embrace Saul and we'd transition towards the Breaking Bad timeline, and even though it's not what I initially expected, this is the perfect and saddest moment for it to finally happen. Just seeing him lose the love of his life, followed by the time jump is just heart-breaking. People have said that this implies that the persona of Saul Goodman we see in BB is now recontextualized as a coping mechanism for losing Kim and for the guilt he feels for everything that has come of being Jimmy McGill, and I really truly believe that. The last scene with Jimmy and Kim is one of those great moments when waiting week to week, instead of binging, is actually a good thing. Having that time to reflect that that whole era is just...over. Their relationship and everything that caused it's downfall. If I binged it all (assuming it was released) I don't think would have had that lasting impression, that time to think about it. It wasn't that impactful when watching it but, but thinking about it afterwards, I can't get it out of my head, it's so heartbreaking and leaves me feeling so empty. There was no neat bow connecting absolutely everything to smoothly transition into BB-era, just a sudden cut. We had all been eagerly awaiting the moment for Jimmy to turn into Saul, now we finally have it, and we just want to go back. Unbelievable writing.

There are a lot of theories about what happens to Gene, mostly all bad. One thing a lot of people are forgetting is that he has a bag full of diamonds. That has to be of real importance for what fate has in store for him, and possibly Kim. Could they re-unite and run away together for a "happy ending"? Kind of like Walters bittersweet ending.

This episode gave us an entire new perspective for how we view Jimmy, Mike, and Gus. Gus cannot live a normal life due to his stark need for revenge. Gus still feels pain from Max's death and will stop at nothing to pursue his vengeance. The revenge factor bleeds into Mike who gets a dose of reality from Papa Varga. Mike seems like a decent guy to us, but to the average person he's just another criminal. Mike still feels the agony from Matty's death but also Werner's death. He tries to be the good samaritan but instead he receives more and more pain. Then we have Jimmy who loses the person that was keeping him afloat in terms of staying as Jimmy, at least what was left of him. Kim leaving is the final piece of the transformation puzzle. Jimmy toed the line with the law, but Saul steps over the line. All three characters go into Breaking Bad with significant losses. Losses that shaped them into the people they probably should have never become. Ridiculously great writing of course, but wow is it tragic. Better Call Saul showed the backstories, Breaking Bad shows the transformations. Chef's Kiss 🤌

Nope. This scene was in 2005 and Badger won't meet Saul until 2008. But I do think that the writers wanted to call back to that and show how dirty Saul's clientele is.

@@Fnelrbnef Yeah I really hope they naturally fit into the narrative, and it's hard to imagine it not feeling a little forced but they've shocked me many times before. And yeah, I also thought it was weird that they revealed the cameos, apparently Bryan Cranston was surprised by that too. I'm guessing it was AMC's decision to draw in viewers, and not anyone directly working on the show. Can't blame them too much, BCS's viewership has been depressingly low compared to BB.

@@schmuck.on.wheels Yeah, it has. AMC ofc want their dollars, but feels inauthentic to me in a way, to drop that info before. Would've been a delightful surprise if we didn't knew. - Sometimes, it's right to let things grow organically. I bet in ten years, Better Call Saul has cult status and is viewed by a lot more people. Creds to AMC for sticking with it though.

Pretty cool parallel I noticed, at 3:04 Jimmy tells Kim one day they'll wake up and realize they didn't think about it. In an early season Mikes daughter-in-law tells Mike she went to work and realized at some point in the day she hadn't thought about her husband once. EDIT: actually it was S04E04 'Group Therapy' when Mike and Stacy went to the group therapy session

I think the gate between Mike and Nachos Father is spot on what you said, it made me think Mike THINKS he's clean and doing good by telling nachos dad, but he's tainted by being in the business now. Even if we think its a good deed, as the dad said, cartels are always the same. Makes it even more sad to know his fate in Breaking Bad, he wanted out but there's no way out once you cross to the other side of that gate.

Sort of a thesis statement for the whole series. The different ways the characters seek what they see as justice for what they've suffered, putting everything else they hold dear on hold (Gus going so far as to deny himself any distraction that might allow him to move on with his life). Nacho's dad undercuts all of this by calling out Mike on it, and in the end Kim's response to all of this is that she can no longer make "justice" - in her sense the legal profession - her life.
@schmuck.on.wheels
@schmuck.on.wheels 2 жыл бұрын
This is a really great point. I would just say that the issue Kim has is maybe less that she's made justice her life, but that she's made herself the arbiter of justice. For a while now she's differentiated (somewhat rightfully so) that there's a difference between legal justice and moral justice (see: Mesa Verde vs. Edward Acker), and she's tried to help those who are "deserving" (and had no problem hurting those who aren't, like Howard). And I think she's reached a point where she's like "who am I to pass judgement on people?".
