Kim is a realist, its hard not to be when you are holding a law degree. And she knows everyone has good and bad in them. She is as bad for Jimmy as he is for her. Whether he is doing bad and she is letting it happen or vice versa. Everyone is a sinner and she knows that. I love her character and whoever invented it is brilliant. Their antics might be a tad hollywood but the characters are very real to life.

0:33 It’s not just Odenkirk too, there’s a lot of dry comedy, at least to me. Characters like Gus, Mike and Nacho interacting with more comedic characters like Pryce or even Lalo. Also Hector never fails to crack me up. One of my favorite comedic scenes is the one where Hector starts being a public nuisance at Los Pollos Hermanos, like him smoking inside, patting Lyle on the back or pouring himself Doctor Pepper without paying. Another funny scene is where he reacts to hearing that Tuco stabbed someone in prison. “Agh *kicks over table* all he had to do was six months *signs* he’s going to be in there forever!”. Not sure what it is, but Mark Margolis’s delivery always cracks me up.

15:37 The trick about this "profoundly unethical behavior of Jimmy's" is that most if not all of that cash was the result of his father giving out hand-outs while Jimmy just happened to be present. The only thing Jimmy stole from his own perspective were the collector's coins that he ended up hiding in the gas station's ceiling tiles. By his own admission, that's all he ever stole from his father. Chuck's perception of Jimmy is fundamentally skewed and exaggerated by his own envy of his brother's social grace.

I don't think it's as simple as that. I don't think Jimmy would admit to stealing thousands from his dad's business - however, I don't believe Chuck is entirely right either. Both Chuck and Jinny are present absolutes. Chuck says it's was Jimmy who stole the money, and Jimmy says it was his dad who gave it away. The truth is likely somewhere in-between. The more important point is what each characters view tells us about them. Chuck blaming solely Jimmy is reflective of his bias against Jimmy, whilst Jimmy blaming solely his father is reflective of his inability to take accountability for his actions.

A big reason Kim tells Jimmy she doesn't want him to tell her about his illegal behavior like fabricating evidence is because as an attorney / Officer of the Court she is technically obligated to report his behavior. One of my favorite little things about Jimmy is how he’d react to situations where a victim of one of his schemes would finally confront him after they fell for his trap and would try to call out his bullshit. Jimmy always tries to slither his way out of it by coming up with all sorts of excuses but he can also slowly admit to all those schemes after the victim manages to peel away all the layers to Jimmy’s scheme and motivations behind it one after the other. It has happened a lot from the Chuck era all the way to Howard’s final moments and I’ve loved every single one of it

About “the lack of change”, I think it’s not only applied to Jimmy but also applied to Chuck as well, especially if compared with Walter White. Two of them are very prideful individuals who are the best in their business but they met their demise thanks to their own pride. But the difference between Walt and Chuck is that Walt is capable of change while Chuck failed to do so. In the end of their life, Chuck never once considered that his actions to Jimmy were wrong. He always thought that he’s right and he told Jimmy that Jimmy didn’t matter that much to him as a final revenge. Meanwhile, Walter might did the same thing as Chuck to Jesse (saying “I watched Jane die”) and manipulating and torturing Jesse all the time but in his last moment, he had a self-realization that what he did to Jesse were wrong and Jesse deserves to have a chance to kill him. Walt is willing to change, that’s why even though he’s way worse than Chuck about legality and murder, he’s better than Chuck at conscience. To think about it, both of these prideful characters committed suicide thanks to Jimmy. Jimmy messing with the insurance sent Chuck into a downward spiral. Jimmy’s lack of action about finding the mercenaries causing Walt to changed his plan in to a suicide mission. This makes me really scare for Kim because not only she is very egotistical like these two, she’s also the closest to Jimmy and there are many hints in Breaking Bad that she committed suicide.

I don't know if I agree that Chuck never had that moment of self-reflection. I could be misremembering, but I feel like his suicide was partially a result of him recognizing the lies he'd been telling himself: that Jimmy was fully at fault, that his mental illness was a physical one, that he is an ethical person. Even his final line to Jimmy, (paraphrasing) "I never really think much about you," is such an obvious lie. Like to say something that blatantly contradictory to everything you've ever done, you have to realize there's something fucked up about your actions. Now his RESPONSE to this is far worse off than Walt's. I wouldn't say that Walt killed himself, because I don't believe that was intention (and there's significant evidence that Walt survived his wounds). But either way, he went out of his way to fix at least the most immediate consequence of his recklessness. Now in Chuck's situation, I'm not really sure what that would entail. Apologizing maybe? He never apologizes, or tells Jimmy about their mother's last words calling out for Jimmy. But certainly, killing himself to avoid facing this reality he'd built is a terrible thing to do. He chose to run from his actions rather than face them. Chuck DID recognize his unethical behavior, but refused to accept it or change. So.... actually, I guess that means I agree with you. Never mind.
@kevin_costner4120
@kevin_costner4120 2 жыл бұрын
Theres no evidence Walt survived it, even in el Camino it proves that Walt is dead. And I do believe Walt dying was intentional, since he couldn’t survive going there, and he for sure didn’t want to go to the police. I do agree with everything else tho

Could the “Belize” part in the bingo be a foreshadowing of Jimmy/Saul/Gene’s fate? In BB, we all know he uses Belize as a code for dying/getting whacked. In this, he says “I’ve always wanted to go there (Belize). But let’s face it, it’s never gonna happen”. Is that them telling us that at some point, Jimmy wishes he would die, but is not able to? (Too afraid of suicide, whatever it may be). Or a clue to him actually dying?

25:45 Kim and Jimmy are both attorneys in the same state's bar, with a professional responsibility and a responsibility to report misconduct of other attorneys to the disciplinary board. Kim learns that Jimmy has fabricated evidence. Presenting fabricated evidence to investigators or a court violates the attorney's duty of candor to the tribunal. Kim's command to Jimmy that she not hear anything like this ever again is good lawyering for herself and for Jimmy, because her professional responsibility is implicated in her failure to report Jimmy's misconduct to the disciplinary board. But, she can't be obligated to report what she doesn't know, if Jimmy doesn't tell her what he does.

For a therapist, I'm going to _highly_ recommend watching the show 'Barry'. It only ran for four seasons, short seasons, so it's not too much of a commitment. It's a show that absolutely also tackles the 'can people change' question throughout the entire show, and you will have _plenty_ to analyze about the main character Barry (as well as some of the other characters, not to mention that Bill Hader's performance in the show is absolutely extraordinary and he won two Emmys for it. Henry Winkler won one as well).

I love your analysis (& I've also watched the second video in this series), but I think you've glossed over 2 really crucial points: 1: We know that Jimmy is capable of profound change because he secretly put himself through law school while working in the HHM mailroom. The University of American Samoa Law School may not be much of a pedigree, but Jimmy did, in fact, pass the bar examination to become an accredited lawyer in the State of Illinois. Try to imagine what Jimmy's life trajectory would have been if Chuck had accepted Jimmy's self-transformation and recommended him for an entry-level job at HHM. True, it would have made for a much more boring TV show. But just imagine how Jimmy's live might have gone. 2. I've always been bothered by the notion that Jimmy stole from his parents' corner bodega to the tune of more than $10,000 while he was just a teenager. This is a truly damning indictment. But the only evidence we have that this ever happened is Chuck's inappropriate disquisition to Kim. On the other hand, we have Jimmy's assertion that his father was not capable of running a corner grocery store because he was an easy mark for con artists and anyone who was down on their luck. I assume that Chuck is telling the truth when he says that when he went over the accounts for the store he learned that $14k (or thereabouts) was missing. But where did it go? Chuck is convinced that Jimmy stole it. I am not convinced. I think that it's equally likely that his father pissed away that money by trusting people whom he never should have trusted. I really hope that Season 6 clears this up. But of course I suspect they won't. They'll leave this question open, up in the air, to torture use forever.

"like in belize ... beautyful place, so i've heard - i wanna get there but let's b honest. It's never going to happen..." From breaking bad we know how he used "a trip 2 belize" as sugar coded alternate way to say killing someone. Is this scene here actually him confessing that he plays with the idea of suicide n unlikely will do it cuz he hasn't the balls to do so? - as thin as it is cuz the call back would actually call forward, n we don't ever know if he uses this term as code spontaniously or if it's usual - still it could really have that meaning. Would it only b about the first part, i'd think it a stretch, but combined with the bingo balls as visual reminder for the 2nd part, the admition to himself why he won't do the idea admitted to the elders... If that had really this subtext as hidden meaning that u only can understand as breaking bad fan - that would b fanservice on another level.

My father has always been surprisingly childish. He was supposed to be an authority figure, someone I respected, maybe even a roll model. He never was. So when you ask the question, my answer is yes. That is my experience. I started looking for authority figures to look up to, who could help me turn into a proper adult one day. But as a kid, I had no idea what to actually look for. I made some very strange choices, learned some very stupid things.... I was somewhere in my mid-to late 20s when I finally learned to communicate, but only because I noticed there was a man at work in his early 40s that did pretty well in life, and I started looking up to him. When your parents are lacking as roll models, life gets surprisingly hard. In my very early 30's a friend of mine started talking about his experience in seeing a psychiatrist, and thank god for that. It inspired me to ask for help....

Re: when Kim confronts Jimmy on his illegal behavior and only talks about the risk of getting caught, I don't think that implies she was ok with the behavior & just afraid of the consequences. Kim knew that Jimmy was a highly intelligent lawyer and to point out to him that his behavior was illegal would be stating the obvious. He knew very well he was breaking the law & violating ethical duties. She went straight to then asking why he wasn't concerned about the risk of getting caught. A "what are you thinking? kind of moment..

I'm so glad I found your channel, great video! just wanna add that I think Chuck's perspective about Jimmy stealing money from their dad is wrong Chuck said he noticed it because he saw Jimmy taking money out of the register and saw thousands missing; but we see their father taking money of the register to give to random people that lie to him and Jimmy says it happened often; Jimmy also shows his novelty coins and paper money to his friend, saying he would take them out of the register to try and sell for more money basically is possible that that's what Chuck saw, Jimmy taking those novelty money and assumed the thousands lost were his fault

Jimmy's dad would chances are track what he gives to others and wouldn't give away what he couldn't afford. He wouldn't be able to see if Jimmy was taking some.

Would Jimmy have fought so hard for the elderly residents of Sandpiper if he wasn't getting a big payday at the end? While recuperating from the car accident Kim told Jimmy that her favorite movie since childhood was "To Kill a Mockingbird" and that it wasn't that she had a crush on Atticus but rather she wanted to BE Atticus Finch. "Fight the good fight for the underdog?" Jimmy responds. Kim replies "Doesn't everyone? Didn't you?" Jimmy replies "Nah.....that was more Chuck's thing."

Examining these sorts of behavioral idiosyncracies in the context of therapy can be challenging because confirmation bias, emotion, ego, etc. can be so strong, but as someone who struggles with self-image and avoidant behaviors, I find these videos very therapeutic and even inspiring. I don't feel threatened by comparisons to the vulnerabilities and flaws of characters like Saul because they offer more extreme examples of negative behavioral constructs which are easier to recognize as ineffective, nonproductive and harmful, but still manage to do so in a way that almost forces you as the viewer to empathize with and relate to them without feeling attacked. It helps shift the narrative from "I am / the character is inherently flawed and cannot change, and are therefore not worthy of love and respect and thus the hard work of being pro-social and confronting my / their emotions is wasted effort" to "I am / these characters are good people who deserve the love and effort of fearless self-analysis and the behavioral changes that can manifest as a result, and so do my / their close friends and loved ones." Thank you for putting in this effort for sharing your informed perspective via this creative and relatable outlet, it's very thought provoking and refreshes my point of view on my own struggles with mental and behavioral health. Thank you also for the work you do in general as a therapist. ✌️

Since you hadn't watched Breaking Bad at the time of this video, I'll mention as someone who did that Jimmy saying he'd "love to go to Belize" got not just the 'hey I understood the reference' neurons firing, but specifically was very telling in the context of his post-betrayal despair here. An expression at what must have been a subconscious level of a need for change, a need for this thing that's happening to stop, a need to die, in that 'not actually but please make this stop' way. Just for a moment, then on we roll.

The last episode’s flashback kind of dispels the notion that Saul turned out to be Saul because of his brother. Yes I’m sure instead of maybe being a 7/10 scumbag he became a 10/10 scumbag because of the last words Chuck told him. But he was already not doing good things before him and Chuck fought

The reason he turns completely into Saul tho is beacsud3 his brothers not around to stop him or guilt him for doing immoral things. The minute he gets involved with the cartel you can see he's thinking oh shit this is what my brother was always warning me about

I see it as jimmy saying he wants to kill himself, literally. mental illness as such is something that runs in family. there's chuck obviously but also his father, who is only stated to have died because his shop closes down, which I feel like could be implying he killed himself (maybe amc told them they couldn't state it directly)

Wouldn't Kim be more inclined to be drawn to Jimmy since he was basically the male version of her mother? She was a thief & a con. Jimmy wasn't an alcoholic but he was addicted to grifting like a drug. Plus, they both felt like outsiders looking in at born into privilege Howard and wealthy & highly accomplished and rigid Chuck. That sense of being the underdog and/or not worthy of hanging with the "upper class" would have created a sense of bonding I would think. Us vs them that made it easier for Kim to "slip in" lol to Jimmy's grifting world.
