Courtney this is sensational. Gene has the diamonds, and his drink of choice is a Rusty Nail. Also, the urn that he carried to possibly use as a weapon contained the ashes of a dog named Rusty. And the opening lyrics to Diamonds and Rust almost perfectly parallel the Gene/Kim phone call. All the clues were there, but it took your perceptiveness to put them together this brilliantly. I’m not sure what I’ll miss more after next Monday: New episodes of BCS or your insightful reviews of them.

I recently got into Joan Baez, this quickly became one of my favorite songs ever. I never thought about how perfectly this song fits Jimmy and Kim's relationship, especially after the last episode. As always, great and incredibly thoughtful work! Interesting to think about Jimmy to Kim as what Bob Dylan was to Joan Baez when she wrote this song. His fame skyrocketing from his charisma and unique ability to manipulate words, leaving behind the woman who helped shape him. I always think it's interesting to look at Jimmy's story as an allegory for a creative career.

Thanks for this, Courtney, really. For some reason I didn't cry during the episode. I was actually thinking, what's wrong with me! Well, it just took some time. Watching this, I finally cried. It helped me remind myself what they had was the most beautiful thing. It was true love. And when a connection like that is lost while the love remains, that's earth-shattering. And when what happens next is that these lovers actually turn against each other and hurt each other (especially Jimmy does his best to hurt Kim because of how much pain he's in), it's pretty much the most horrible thing imaginable that can happen. It's really sensational how it's laid out piece by piece in this series. During season 1, maybe still during season 2, I was kind of criticizing this series for being so fond of spending lots of time showing montages of different processes of something being done from beginning to end, in kind of ridiculous detail. Usually it was something so basic that any other series wouldn't bother showing any of it. Breaking Bad already had some of this going on but BCS took it to a whole other level. Soon, however, I began to actually enjoy these visualizations and montages, no matter if what was being depicted sometimes seemed mundane. Well, now, as the end draws near, I finally understand that actually, I think the whole series can be considered like a macro level version of that same thing: Better Call Saul as a whole is a depiction of a slow, sometimes mundane process of a love story, shown in ridiculous detail. And it's utterly magnificent.

I couldn’t help but think of Days of Wine and Roses. I think this is by far the best written couple in T.V. history. They’re so perfect for each other that it’s devastatingly tragic. Just like the movie… Their love is so intense it drives them to complete and utter ruin… They lose all control. Kim is Jack Lemmon. But I hope they don’t go all the way through with this motif because that would mean that Jimmy never quits… he’d live his life waiting for Kim to return and never able to change because of his addiction. Anyways, great video. Had to be done and I’m glad you did it. Made me cry (waterworks).

Yesterday I woke up to this (on the west coast). What an amazing way to start the day. For my whole career I worked in on-air creative for two Canadian television networks, producing, writing, directing, editing on-air creative. There was no internet for a long time. I taught on-air creative to college students - story-telling, writing and editing for the screen. Courtney, if this is your first creative edit, you must continue telling stories. It is brilliant. The story in the lyrics. The selection of shots - I can imagine how many hours you spent screening material and selecting scenes. It’s the creative visual editing to that song that reveals a true natural talent. You’ve made a music video. A powerful one. We’ve all been asking, “what’s Courtney up to after BCS?”. You’ve shown you can do anything you want to. BTW - diamonds are created by heat and pressure on carbon (considered dirty); rust is a result of iron (FE) molecules in steel coming in contact with moisture (for example water, considered clean).

Your statement that this is a tragic love story gives a lot of food for thought. I can't remember any Hollywood love story, tragic or not, where the couple was so regular looking. In other movies, we have "regular folk" portrayed by people like Mark Wahlberg paired with Kate Hudson. Rhea is a good looking woman but Bob could never be called handsome, specially they way they have him look as Saul and Gene. I actually, think that that is refreshing.
@courtneysreviews4382 жыл бұрын
Agreed. It is one of my favorite things about this universe (BrBa and BCS) -- they cast normal looking people. I'm so bored of shows where everyone looks like a model. That's not relatable! It is *very* refreshing to see normal looking people as main characters (as opposed to sidekicks or supporting).
