Howard stopping to thank Cliff in that moment was one of my favorite lines of dialogue in the series. Howard was likely so furious at Jimmy and wanted to scream but the emotional intelligence to recognize that this was very difficult for Cliff (especially because of Cliff’s son) and show his genuine appreciation for Cliff’s concern. I don’t know I just really liked that moment. Most shows would cut when Cliff says Kim Wexler, but BCS (and BB) really put the time into truly finishing a scene

"Suspension of disbelief" I know... but if I was in Howard's position, I would do the following: Bend down and say to Cliff, "Pinch a clump of my hair and pull... I really do appreciate you looking out for my well being, but I'm telling you... you've been had. You're a good guy and I have no ill will towards you, but I promise you... there's fuckery afoot. Don't take me at my word. Test my hair for narcotics. When you get the results, I don't require an apology. I actually am glad you confronted me. But when you have the results, swing by the office and I'll tell you what's REALLY going on." I actually don’t think it was that good as it stands now. Gus pitched “Spice Curls” in the meeting with Madrigal/Schuler last season. When he said it again to the customer, it triggered him into thinking Lalo might dig into Madrigal/Germany/Werner. Which is why Gus went to the lab, to plan his defense (It looks like he is planning on pulling the plug on the lights so he can get to his gun which is why he counts his strides from the plug to the excavator). He knows Lalo will go there now so he's going to use Lalo's new found knowledge against him to lure him into a trap which I'm guessing works and means Lalo's corpse was under the floor/inside the south wall all throughout Breaking Bad.

I really liked this episode. Even with season 5, the majority of the action was reserved for episodes 8-10. We got plenty of action in episodes 2-3 and now they are setting up the end game. I appreciate that BCS is sticking to it’s roots and not just forcing action into every episode bc it’s the final season and that’s what some fans expect of final seasons. I expect the stakes to be very high next week and then everything will come to a head in episode 7, with all of the fall out/Gene stuff to come in the 2nd half.
@bgbills102 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t have to be action-packed but this episode was filler. Jimmy is still so different from Saul and we don’t have a lot of episodes left. We don’t even have a Gene episode yet, and at this point it will be rushed. The boxing scene was cringe, and they had us watch Gus scrub bath tile! Riveting stuff! Like the video says this is a prequel so we know Gus will survive, so the suspense is not working on us. And they spent too much screen time on Gus’ paranoia. It looked like Jimmy fully intended to walk away at first and then you see his face change. After Kim’s “it’s because you know what’s next line”, it made me think that Jimmy was having pity for Howard and was like yeah I should probably give him a chance to do this since he might be feeling guilty about whatever they plan to do to Howard next. I don’t know if this was intentional but it seemed to me that Jimmy was not giving a full effort during the boxing match - I wonder if that was Jimmy’s way of throwing Howard a bone. On the other hand, I think Howard would have still won either way lol.

I disagree with the two responses above. I think you're just being worked by Lalo if you think he really did sympathise with Werner's wife and would have felt bad about killing her - he just didn't want to bring any unnecessary heat upon himself. He kills people for a reason, but he doesn't care about them. This was made very clear when Saul explained who the family of his victim were in Fred's murder case, he was utterly apathetic towards his crying, grieving parents. He's a manipulative, charming, murderous psychopath. If he seems like he's sympathetic towards the person he's manipulating, that's because he's emotionally manipulative and convincing in his act. You both got it right in your second parts, but framed it as "plus" and "not to mention" when those were the actual reasons rather than supplementary.

@@Steelrat1994 Pretty obvious that Jimmy held his punches since he could have held his own much like Howard said. He feels guilty about what they're about to do to him so he figured he could at least spare him the beatup. There was also helluva lot more than "Kim and Jimmy planning on Howard knowing". Gus realizing Lalo's plan and overcoming his paranoia, Francesca's first step into becoming the greedy cold woman we see during Breaking Bad and setting up Howard's PI crossing paths with Mike's men are all pretty huge deals. You can't have action packed episodes like "Bagman" without paving the way for it in episodes like "JMM".

One thing I realized this episode was that Howard has always known Jimmy to be an overconfident small time con artist, so he’s expecting to outsmart that guy. But he’s walking into a trap set by Kim, who they’re setting up as a Gus-level manipulator. I’m starting to think they’re leaning into it so hard it’s a fakeout, but I just can’t decide. The most interesting thing to me this episode was when Jimmy says “fight for you, huh?” and Kim responded like “yeah, whatever”. I know that’s not quotes of what they said, but right after Kim was really into the fighting for you thing, it was like a complete afterthought to her
@broadcasttttable2 жыл бұрын
I zeroed in on that too. For me its the strongest moment of the episode. Its like she was dismissing him, that she had already decided Jimmy doesn't fight for others, more for himself, and this just shows a widening chasm between them. I still go back to Jimmy backstabbing her in the settlement meeting, and, in her mind, the point-of-no-return for the emotional split between them. Before, they were partners, now he's just a tool in her plan.

I think it is part of her manipulation of Jimmy. It empowers him and fuels him to go forward, leaving her to be in the background.

Idk why people all expect this final season to be as intense as Breaking Bad. I personally love the slower episodes that are setting up to something explosive. If the mid season finale is this slow I’d be dissapointed but I love the feeling of suspense these slower moments create. Seeing Gus terrified and Mike working overtime to find Lalo is amazing.

We don’t expect it to be as intense as breaking bad. We do however expect the plot to move forward at a natural progression and be interesting. They are constantly setting things up with absolutely no payoff. We didn’t get to see the aftermath of the Wendy scam in last weeks episode, this week we see that Howard wants a pi to follow Jimmy, but we don’t see the pi following Jimmy in the same episode! Instead we get extended pointless scenes of Gus being scared. (Yeah we get it. He’s scared. They established thst in the previous episode. Let’s move on .) we get viola and Kim, and the boxing scene, all which could have been cut. The majority of the episode should have been pi following Jimmy/more of lalo in Germany trying to get info from Ziegler’s wife

I felt the same way as you did regarding not knowing what their plan was. Again with the Hitchcock, who described the difference between ‘Action’ and ‘Suspense’ by saying, ‘Imagine that you’re watching men playing a card game, then a man with a gun bursts through the door-that’s action. Now imagine that you’re watching this same group of men playing cards, and the camera cuts to a guy taking out a gun, then back to the game, then it cuts to him quietly moving up the stairs-that’s suspense.’ Wouldn’t it have been better to have seen Jimmy saying, ‘Now-think like a Judge”…and had a cut to Howard saying simply, “Judge So-and-so…” and WE could’ve seen that this Judge with a handlebar mustache had a broken arm. Hence, we the audience would’ve known more than the characters, men playing cards, but here Jimmy and Kim, and we would’ve been watching them toasting what they were about to do, and hearing Kim saying, ‘but you know what’s coming’, whilst proverbially biting our lips. In this case, it would’ve been so much more entertaining, amirite …??

I also love that even with him barely using a single word, you can understand that Gus thinks he now knows exactly what Lalo's plan is (hinted at by him leaving his gun and setting up the underground lab so he can ambush him later), and his theory is confirmed just a few minutes later when we finally understand what "proof" Lalo was going after (poking at the "Werner Ziegler" lead he got from last season, more than likely trying to understand what they were working on). Say what you want but I'm still finding it too slow and boring. Especially considering that it's the final season. The series is basically finished and Saul's involvement in cartel stuff, action and other things that everyone wants to see is considerably small and meaningless. The cartel side of the plot has always been too detached from Saul's plot and I find ridiculous that after five seasons they've only been able to connect Saul with Lalo thanks to the first episode with tuco. We all loved that but it was really unrealistic. I mean, a Mexican granny that drives around with a car like that? And then, after that, zero involvement until the fifth season and now zero again. It's not enough. At the end of the day you can count the episodes of saul involved in breaking bad stuff on one hand. And to make things worse, there will be another two fucking months of nothing until July when they'll resume with the last six episodes. Which sounds like a sick joke since they kept everybody waiting like idiots for two years. I'm a big fan of the series but this is really shit.

Also, Werner is dead in the prequel, but is in the picture in BB and then dies in Breaking Bad. Are these looks into the future? It seems like these scenes are part of the present plot in Better Call Saul.

Isn’t it sad that Breaking Bad wasn’t made in this era where the film quality/cinematography is so incredible now. BCS looks so beautiful.

It does look beautiful! This is one episode that I didn't find any beauty in. But normally, there is a lot of it.
