One of the greatest tv villains gets kind of a bad ending. If you have shot a gun or know a little bit about guns then you know that unless you’re pinpoint with your aim the bullet will miss the target. To me it makes no sense that lalo was shot in the neck in the dark by Gus because Gus was essentially guessing where his aim was and that it so happens that the bullet hits lalo throat but no other area of the body. The throat has a small cross section on the body and the chance of hitting in the dark is borderline impossible. Bad ending because it seems like a plot convenience rather than Gus actually outplaying lalo.

At first, I thought, wow, typical slimeball Jimmy is such a coward he's going to throw Kim under the bus. But within a few seconds, as Jimmy grows even more calm and focused, you realize he's rising to the occasion, and when he gives Kim that look, it's clear they both understand. The writing is incredible, and Rhea Seahorn and Bob Odenkirk nail it.

This episode answer all the questions about the whole Mike’s dynamic with Saul in Breaking Bad. - Mike “disliking” Jimmy: for doing scams on Howard, destroying his reputation and dragging Howard into the game (intentionally or not) and got him killed. Jimmy’s scam was what killed an innocent man outside the game. - Mike, however, never came close to “hate” Jimmy: because as dishonorable and pathetic as Jimmy is, Mike knows that Jimmy still have some shred of honor left by sending Kim out to get her away from the danger of Lalo. This also explains why Mike hates Walter so much because unlike Jimmy who sent his own wife to shoot someone else to ensure her safety, Walter sent Jesse to shoot Gale to ensure the safety of Walter himself. A very selfish and dishonorable act for Mike.

I can't make sense of how Mike would believe that Lalo's grand plan is to send Kim to shoot a body double and then stay in an apartment hoping it all works out. @mjj31322 жыл бұрын
I agree, but not because she knew Lalo was alive. It goes back to Season 4, in which the Kim/Jimmy storyline is defined by Jimmy being unable to have any emotional reaction to Chuck's death. It makes Kim question their relationship. Jimmy clearly (given the full transformation into Saul Goodman) goes the same route with Howard. Kim, now directly inolved, might not be able to handle that. And even though they have a tidy ending to the Howard story right there for the taking, I can see Kim partially rejecting it, and, while having to avoid detailing any knowledge of his death, owning up to the scam in a way that leaves Jimmy out of it, but gets her disbarred.

Sorry, but I read this so often and it still doesn't make any sense at all. Lalo being alive has nothing to do with the whole Howard scheme. Lalo only had a completely random impact on Howard, why would him being alive in any way alter a completely different aspect of their life? It's not like their scheme was super high profile and would have attracted him or that it happened in a field that would affect Lalo. To me, it seems like people are grasping at straws in order to shift blame towards Kim so they can whitewash Jimmy. At least I have no other idea why anyone would connect Lalo and Howard otherwise.

After emptying his revolver is the only time we’ve ever seen Gus truly terrified and powerless, for if he missed, which he can’t tell in the darkness, there was nothing whatsoever for him to do. We even see Mike lecturing Gus about just how stupid all his decisions were in that episode. That’s not even to mention just how many connections between the two shows finally clicked because of this episode-not just Saul’s line in the desert but even Mike’s complete loss of respect for Saul and lack of affection for Gus, details we could’ve easily missed that the show is so much better off for addressing. I think it’s interesting the writers had Lalo wear his blue suede shoes in this episode, shoes that are easily ruined. Usually when he’s in a serious scene he is wearing dark leather shoes that are easier to clean. Maybe it’s to show he’s lost control of himself.

I scrolled through a ton of responses to find this. Mike mentions that the chances are someone might have seen the Jaguar. But as you mentioned, 8 guys walking up the stairs, a refrigerator going out and one coming in all with a missing person involved doesn’t raise questions, just a car that might have been seen in the parking lot is the reason to possibly worry if the cops show up to act normal like nothing happened.

The foresight of Gus is striking. He used a logical train of thought to foresee his battle with Lalo. He realized Lalo couldn’t kill him without enraging the cartel. Thus Lalo would have to prove Gustavo’s disloyalty to the cartel, and the only proof of that was the lab. Thus Gus knew Lalo would need proof of Gus and the lab together before he tried to kill Gus, and therefore calculating that Lalo would try to kill Gus in the lab once he inevitably finds it. So he plants the gun there and gets a layout of what he can use (light switch) in the lab to his advantage. That’s some Bruce Wayne level planning there. As smart as I l’d like to think I am, I’m certain I would not be able to think so far ahead and foresee such a situation.
@Mr___X2 жыл бұрын
It is Bruce Wayne planning in the sense that you can only get away with it in a work of fiction. It fits the character of Fring as something otherworldly, but as Lalo has that quality as well (and moreso), it was a fairly crude way to get rid of him. The shooutout descends in to superhero stuff, where Lalo loses all of his potency and Fring gains superpowers. You can suspend your disbelief in terms of hte foresight etc but the shootout itself was pretty poor.
@princeperegrinezamora66672 жыл бұрын
What's underwhelming is that, Lalo outsmarted 5 assasins during the ambush, while Gus never really showed any expertise in handling guns, and was able to hit Lalo in partial darkness. I was expecting that in order to really beat Lalo in a gun fight, Gus needs to pull something bigger rather than turning off the lights and running towards the gun. But I am also considering the fact that Lalo gave too much opportunity to Gus but it's still not enough for him to beat in a gun fight like that.

you mean in the lab where gus knows the full layout and where lalo was shooting with one hand because of the camera? yes gus was extremely lucky but he had situational awareness and was very very scared it was a clear fight or flight. it wasn’t meant to be a shootout scene, lalo felt he had the power in the situation the whole time and the moment he got complacent and gus kicked the wire, he had lost the fight

In an episode, they managed to transform a forgettable expositional joke from a comic relief character into a deeply tragic expression of repressed trauma and made one of the greatest and most terrifying villains on TV into a character we WANT to win. They made an inevitable showdown with an inevitable ending into a bone-rattling and stressful battle, where knowing the ending didn’t even remotely reduce the tension. It’s all incredible.

What’s interesting to me is how rough things could get for Jimmy/Kim psychologically. That will be interesting to see play out. I believe it’s been said that consequences for actions are important to Vince Gilligan. K/J pulled this long prank on Howard making him look like a cocaine junkie, then he is murdered in cold blood mostly because of them (wrong place/wrong time), and now he’ll be leaving a legacy… that these two set up… for which he’ll NEVER be able to erase. We know Vince Gilligan is pretty merciless, so it’s hard to see these two living some happy life together in the end.

I like to think when Mike had the two bodies in the grave, it was like seeing someone completely evil next to someone who in reality was a good man. Almost looking like the wings of a demon and angel as two halves staring down at mike, representing his own loss of morals to both good and the bad
@sundjatamb30612 жыл бұрын
yeah, I feel like that was one of the few moments of growing insight on Mike's part (along with killing Werner) that he's not a good person, and his moral code of being a "good" criminal doesn't mean shit in the world he's put himself into. I also like how, when he confronts Gus, Gus basically lets him know through implication which of the two of them is to be more feared. "It could have" is as close to Gus's "I am the danger!" as we will get
@ExplictZz_2 жыл бұрын

This episode fully explained (for me, at least) why Saul and Mike heavily dislike each other. And also why Fring stays far away from Saul despite them knowing of each other’s mutual interest. One subtly thar struck me when Gus realized that Jimmy couldn’t talk Lalo out of sending him is that Gus and Lalo are the real criminals here. With all of Jimmy’s shenanigans he just isn’t a player in that world. We see him as the hero of the story and thus imbue him with competency, but he truly is in over his head.

Of all the scenarios I considered, I never thought Lalo would send one of them to try and kill Gus as a diversion. I also expected that it would take one more episode to wrap up Lalo's story, with this one being the setup. My favorite parallels from this episode are the scenes where two characters that oppose each other are laying on the ground together. The fact that Howard and Lalo were under the lab the whole time! The continued ‘chess match’ between Lalo and Gus. The fact that Kim was literally going to go through with killing a stranger, insane. And seeing Gus scared and in a situation out of his control was shocking

I don't think Jimmy "talked Lalo" into sending Kim. I think that was Lalo's plan all the time! I believe that he knew both of them would fail, and Kim would be more believable/emphatic that Mike's crew needed to save Jimmy. Lalo leaving after Jimmy is tied up was always the play. He never had expectations of the kill happening, it was all to increase the distraction! Brilliant!!!
@deepspire2 жыл бұрын
Yes. Lalo said “OK, whoever” like he really didn’t care, which was puzzling because since he didn’t expect it to work, Jimmy would have been the best option to send since it was all supposed a distraction so Lalo could get his proof.
