I just realized something about the Gus bar scene. I think maybe in this scene, Gus is also sort of appreciating or understanding how defensive Nacho was about his dad, and just in general the compassion Mike was showing Nacho as well. In his moment of incredible stress with Lalo, he really was willing to threaten and kill this civilian in order to get his way, but now that things have wound down, and has a moment to appreciate another human being again, he's starting to understand that perspective a little bit more again, realizing that he'll likely be in the same position if he tries to form a relationship with the bartender. And I think that would lead Gus into just in general not being AS much of a hard-ass in Breaking Bad, at least in the beginning. The guy who understands Walt's motivations for getting his money, to tell Mike back at him that fear isn't a good motivator. Of course that only lasts until his buttons start being pushed again with how much Walt and Jesse set him back, and with the Cartel harassing him. I don't know, could be a stretch but to me it helps link BCS and BB in that Gus does have a bit of a change, even if it's not as drastic as some of the other characters
@georgeforeman76212 жыл бұрын
I just rewatched BB, and Gus saying fear isn’t a good motivator confused me a bit because of everything that went down with Nacho, but your comment honestly helped it make a little more sense! Thanks :)
@BertoPlease2 жыл бұрын
@@georgeforeman7621 I think the common consensus in the fanbase is that the fact that Nacho had Gus' fate in his hands the whole time they were doing his questioning, even Nacho giving Gus some threatening glances, made him realize that fear is indeed a very dangerous way to get someone to do your bidding, as he had no love or loyalty to Gus and perhaps thought he could throw him under the bus. But yeah this thought I had kinda compliments that thought process as well

In regards to Jimmy getting 86 years, I think there's an important line of dialouge when Jimmy says "With good behavior, who knows?" It seems like a joke but I think that it's implying that Jimmy knows he could find a way to maneuver the system to get out of jail eventually if he really wanted to. Even if it wasn't intended that way I think we all know Jimmy is more than capable of that regardless. Not saying he'll get out in seven years but I think there's still reason enough to believe that he "has a shot of seeing daylight in his old age." Really loved these Teir List videos and all your coverage on Better Call Saul BTW!

I actually have a slightly different perspective on what the cigarette being in colour means. A lot of people I've seen talk about it symbolizing that there's still a spark between them. And maybe that is what they were going for, idk. But I've always interpreted it differently. The way I see it, the use of colour in the Gene timeline in "Better Call Saul" has always symbolized one thing: Gene looking back at his glory days. In the first episode Gene's bleak and grey life is interrupted by him looking at his Saul commercial. The colour symbolizing that those were his glory days. Those were the days he wishes more than anything he could go back to. His wealth and power and fame as Saul. However, throughout BCS we've come to understand that Saul was a mask to hide pain more than anything. The wealth and the power and the fame were all empty. Coping mechanisms for trauma. And I think after he got caught and after his trial Jimmy realized this too and began to be honest with himself. And so what appears in colour now is the cigarette with Kim. Because his glory days weren't Saul, his glory days were all the days he spent with Kim. He wishes more than anything that he could go back to those days of them being together, smoking their cigarette in the HHM parking lot.

It's a Christmas miracle! My god s6 part 2 was such a fantastic way to end the BB/BCS universe. Everything that needed to be resolved was given screen time. Saul- I mean Jimmy finally answers for his crimes and of course the climactic encounter with Lalo and the aftermath, one of the most depressing episodes in the franchise. Some people take issue with the slow pacing of the Gene episodes, mainly episode 10 but I think that was intentional to show how boring his life is and why he wants to start conning again, which he does shortly after.

I think it's kinda of ironic that in order for Jimmy to be safe in jail he actually has to become Saul again maybe not in his actions but he at least has to answer to and acknowledge himself being Saul.
@sonokawaray2 жыл бұрын
And I guess when you think about it, he may not have gotten along nearly as well with the inmates at the cushy prison he was originally going to go to, as no matter where he went he would inevitably be seen as Saul instead of James/Jimmy. Over there he'd probably be around more white-collar and other upper-class criminals who would be more inclined to look down on him. The prison he's going to instead is full of the kind of people he catered to as Saul, and to them he's a hero of sorts. He may be serving functionally a life sentence, but the prosecutors may have unintentionally handed him the more comfortable prison life when comparing the two.

I love the Gus at the bar scene and how they did not back away from the idea of Gus' sexuality clashing with the themes that define his character. A lot of hardcore "sigma males" love to deny Gus' sexuality, but so much of that scene is Gus looking at the bartender and entertaining the idea of a life and of a love with him. Also, the way that the bartender describes that the wine has an ever slight taste of blood is reaffirmed when Gus finishes the glass before leaving - deciding that both the only thing a relationship would bring is blood and that revenge will always be more important than it. That scene was really incredibly and probably is one of my favorites in the series for all of the subtext and unspoken meaning that it has.Absolutely adore these retrospectives, would love to see these for Breaking Bad if it is something you would enjoy making.

I don't think Walt admitting Grey Matter was very selfish, it was simply Walt's bad choice road, and leaving it is what made Walt become a teacher, become stuck in life, crush his dreams, make him feel emasculated, that all led him to cooking meth, which lead to Jessie being captured and Hank being killed. I think this is actually a development moment for Walt as he is able to actually see clearly what led him there instead of making more excuses

54:40 in my opinion the symbolism behind this shot of their glass cups on the ledge is that Jimmy and Kim's relationship is so fragile and easily breakable at this point that any minor push (any minor event to happen) will cause it to completely shatter. Like the 2 glass cups being extremely fragile and being placed somewhere, where any minor event could cause the cups to fall and break, Jimmy and Kim relationship is so fragile and ready to be destroyed at this point and it's having to manipulate Cheryl that causes the "cups to break" aka Kim and Jimmy's relationship to officially end, that event being the final straw for Kim.

I like to think the season finale was a remake of a Christmas carol with the 3 cameos representing the 3 ghosts who visit scourge to get him to change his ways. Mike would be the ghost of Christmas past Walter the ghost of Christmas present and chuck would be the ghost of Christmas yet. These flashbacks show the audience the cyclical nature of Jimmy's character with him always never learning his lesson and the need for an intervention in order for him to even have a future outside of scamming
