Thank you Robin, I have just managed to work it out. I did however slightly adjust the Gamma in the levels adjustment to the left on the bottom layer, which made the main image stand out even more.

Great. That’s also a good idea with gamma slider. You might also want to try applying the overlay layer style to it as well.

I've been playing around with different things to do with the extra space in the square (lately a color dropped from the photo with a lower opacity copy of the photo), but haven't tried blurring yet. More importantly, even with the other approaches I've done, I sometimes want a better way to separate the layers, which you addressed here with the outline FX. So I'll try that too.

Thank you very much, Robin! I was really upset with Instagram desaturating my images all the time. This process that you described works like a charm, I`m grateful for your help. But it is so annoying doing that all the time that I'm considering quitting Instagram for good. Cheers!

I'm glad that you found the video helpful. I wouldn't give up on Instagram if you like it though. Just find a way to automate what you find frustrating.

Glad you liked it. A white border is easy. Dont create a background layer, just resize the canvas and then save it. If you still use the cenre anchor point but extend the canvas on the height and width you get a white border all round.

😮 oh... thank you now i know how to transition the colours correctly. why are you using jpg though and not png?

The JPEG files are smaller than PNG and seem to handle colour transitions better (although I can't prove that). I only use PNG if I have transparent areas that I need to keep transparent in the final image. With a JPEG the transparent areas turn to white.
