Absolutely excellent work! So handy! I'd basically given up on using STLs or scan data directly. I'd bring those in and then remodel the part using the STL/Scan as a reference, but that's pretty limited for complicated shapes. Thanks!

Am I wrong to be a little annoyed that Autodesk already has all of the code required to make the triangle mesh -> quad mesh -> t-spline -> brep conversion a one-click process but instead they spread it out over two apps and three dialogs? I guess I'm not paying them any money, but a lot of people are, and if I was one of those people I would be legit mad.
@NicholasPiegdon6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing. To be fair: each one of those steps can run into its own problems. I was trying the same process on a different model earlier today and ran into some trouble on the T-spline to BRep step (where a couple points were too sharp?) and it needed some manual intervention. That doesn't give them a free pass though. They could combine all of those error detection steps into the same single-click, too!

Instead of disabling design history, you can "Create" a "Base Feature". -- It temporarily disables the design history for a single feature that you can accept at the end, and it shows up as a single step in your timeline. :-)
@NicholasPiegdon6 жыл бұрын
The "Sculpt" workspace doesn't appear in the list unless design history is disabled. I just tried with a Base Feature and it wasn't there. :/ I agree that it's a pretty strange requirement. Intuitively it seems like Base Features should be 100% equivalent to a temporary history disable, but they don't appear to be.

Absolutely awesome vid! I’ve had this problem for so long and a solution has finally presented itself in a clear concise manner, thanks so much. Was wondering if you could clarify the part about ReCap, so you just download the free trial and it will let you keep using it even after 30 days?
@NicholasPiegdon6 жыл бұрын
Yep. There aren't any other steps besides saying "No" whenever they ask if you want to subscribe. The 30-day trial is technically for "ReCap Pro", but it's also the only way to download plain "ReCap", which is free to use and still has the export as "OBJ Quads" feature. It feels like an intentionally confusing scheme to try and trick people into subscribing when they don't actually need to.

Many thanks for this Tutorial. I had the hope that it would solve my Problem. But unfortunately Autodesk offers for download only a trial version of Recap Pro Photo that can be used for 30 days and I have not found a way to use ReCap Pro to open obj or stl files from 3D models to generate a quad mesh from a triangle mesh :-( :-( There is no way to import these kind of file types. Is this no longer possible in the current ReCap Pro Photo or what am I doing wrong? There is no different version of Recap for Download.
@NicholasPiegdon2 жыл бұрын
Autodesk is very frustrating. Lately there is an alternative app for that step that is much faster, more flexible, and completely free (made as a result of academic research) called Instant Meshes. github.com/wjakob/instant-meshes You can draw little line segments on the model to show the direction you'd like critical seams, giving a much nicer result than a completely automatic conversion.
@LarsBaeter2 жыл бұрын
@@NicholasPiegdon Thank you for the quick and surely helpful answer. Fortunately, there is usually more than one solution 🙂 I will give InstantMeshes a try. With a little patience it will work .. and yes, Autodesk can be very frustrating .. Instant Meshes does a better job in less time than ReCap Photo, all without Autodesk's hassle of finding the secret, frequently-moved "free version" link on their website. I'd like to do a follow-up video at some point showing how Instant Meshes is better in basically every way.
@LT728843 жыл бұрын
@@NicholasPiegdon true, unless the part you get is somehow jacked. Im working on a part from thingiverse that i did a repair of in netfabb basic, opened in instant mesh and it now has massive holes in the mesh. No idea what went wrong haha. Could be the stl file itself, but i fixed it using the slicer, netfabb, meshmixer, and all 3 exhibit same behavior when you extract the meah in instant mesh.. half my model looks eatin haha.
