I am in my 50’s and Franklin Covey is the OG of planning systems. (It didn’t really work for me, but I liked the prioritization part.) Then different people came on the scene with their systems. I like that you are talking about it now. I believe that hybrids of planning systems are good, so you take what works for you from any system. No system will work for everyone, nor will everything in the system work.

Franklin Covey offers a W H O L E lot. It is a methodology for managing YOUR ENTIRE LIFE. That includes family, religion, school, work, marriage... you name it. GTD can't touch that. GTD is more logistical, where FC is pragmatic, but cannot be separated from your core values. FC forces you to discover those crucial life values that we hold dear. It's about doing "What Matters Most", where GTD is simply about Getting Things Done. That's a B I G D I F F E R E N C E . FC is about planning, but also about introspection and getting a bird's eye view of your life. It can help you focus on the trees or the forest, depending on what you need. It truly is powerful. Sadly, most of us forget about the Weekly Compass, Big Rocks, Roles, and only use the Daily Planner, which I admit is quite powerful. Thanks for making this video.

@lp3198 Hi. FC and GTD are BOTH GOOD. I recommend you try GTD first. Buy the book, Getting Things Done by David Allen. Read the book and then practice GTD for 6 months. Then learn Franklin Covey. I really recommend you take a year and practice BOTH systems. Your life will improve. And you will have skills that will serve you well for the rest of your life. 🙂

But the only problem is that i fear competition I mean with GTD in the office , u can do a lot of stufff fast. It's super effective. I dont wanna do GTD. I stick with FC. But i dont know how much effective is FC compared to GTD in office . Does FC come near GTD in efficiency in the office . How much difference is there in work place

I struggled with GTD method big time. But absolutely love the Franklin Covey method. I list in the category of threes. So Must do, should do, and could do. Monthly for pre-planning. The “Must Do, Should Do, Could Do” is pretty much equivalent to FC’s “ABC, 123” prioritizing method. It ends up looking like “A1, A2, A3, B1, B2, B3” and so on.

@Sarah Jane - must do, should do, could do? Love it too. Simple and philosophically just somehow a little different to listing A,B,C; D (E? But then again surely that wouldn’t get “captured” anyway). Etc. 😂 9:15

I got overwhelmed with Gtd because having all those really long lists and then reviewing them each week got overwhelming and sad when things don’t get crossed off quickly enough. I love the Franklin system since starting it in 2021 and I feel like my future tasks either go on the future task list or are easy to stick on a post it note on the fifties task list. I keep all the monthly tabs in the planner so all the monthly task lists are in my binder too. I love that the system helps you align your values with your roles and big rocks.

But I love that you created your own version of printable inserts! Totally getting them, they're so pretty! But when it gets close to dinner or I ask what would they like. That's another story. I'm approaching it as if mom and dad where on vaction. So when they get back they would be pleasantly surprise on how I got the house "ship shape". Then they can telling my brother and I that they might have found a "new" house for themselves that's closer to family. Which would be a wonderful homecoming for them both. Now today their together again. She passed away two days before what would happen been their 57th wedding anniverary.

So interesting, I’ve used FC for decades and never heard of Richard Winwood til now. I thought it was Hyrum W. Smith who invented the first Franklin planner? He founded Franklin Quest in 1983, which even merged with Stephen Covey’s company to form Franklin Covey (now called Franklin Planner for the planner arm of the company). I did look up both names in Wikipedia, and they both had major founding roles in the company. Hyrum W. Smith also authored several books, including “10 Natural Laws of Successful Time and Life Management,” which explains the Franklin planning method in detail, among other things. He died in November 2019. PS my condolences on the unexpected loss of your mom. I lost my mom on April 3, 2019, 2 days before my birthday. I’ve been in some existential crisis since then… she was a major part of my life.

@@MomYePlans I should clarify - I’ve used the FC system “on and off” since around 1990. I’m actually re-reading the 7 Habits book right now (the updated 30th anniversary edition), and getting back to the system. My planner journey started with FC, then took wild detours in the past 10 years or so, and I’m coming back to it with a fresh perspective. As for grief, time will help soften the pain, but it will always be a part of you. Eventually the good memories tend to outweigh everything else. I lost my dad in 1981 when I was a kid. I can highly recommend books by Dr. Alan D. Wolfelt, especially “Understanding Your Grief,” which has an accompanying optional journal by the same name. It’s very helpful. His website is called Center for Loss (I can’t post the link due to KZbin censorship of links, but Google will point you to it).

But I need about 10 days before that deadline, so that I can find the document and get it prepared, etc. Would it make sense to add a task for 10 days before the deadline. I suppose it would. But then what about 9 days before the deadline, i.e. the next day. I need the task to carry over so I don’t forget about it. Do I simply write it down again? Well, it seems that you as many disredarded the most significxnt part of GTD, namely the higher horizons... That is exactly what people in Covey love so much (rightly so). But is is part of GTD, and more systematic, than in Covey.

Please explain! I’ve actually never heard of higher horizons

@@MomYePlans, I suggest that you read pages 215-226 of the GTD book (pages refer to the 2015 second paperback edition - you can check the index, if you have another). Until you do, a few intro words: What people most often refer to as GTD (including superficial review videos), is usually the 5 basic steps (3 of converting inputs to actions/projects =planning work, 4th is a review, in which you regularly (weekly) go a bit higher to get/retain perspective (this is the "preventive maintenance" of the system), and the 5th is the actual "user manual" of the system). Higher Horizons refer to a view of our life (how our mind "constructs" it). the zeroth horizon is the ground level (actions), the slightly higher - first - are projects (stuff you want to achieve in up to a year - you can take them as the "big rocks" in Covey), the second are your areas of focus (roles in Covey), then longer term plans, visions are still higher (or longer on the time axis - mentioned very briefly and not subdivided in Covey - see his chapter on 3rd habit) and the highest (5th) are purpose and principles (those map partially to "values" in Covey). to make it simpler: when you learn to drive, first you need the technique to have the vehicle under control. This is a must, otherwise your crash. Still, without setting a goal, updating your position and reading a map, you cannot get anywhere, you stop at the first crossing. GTD is by far the best in having your vehicle under control. For reading a map, you have other alternatives and it is a matter of taste which one you use. If clarifying your values once is a good enough base to make sound decisions during your weekly planning (as Covey suggests), you can use it. In my experience life (and the world) moves much faster nowadays. If you need to create clarity/perspective and the next hour need to zoom to the very next action ANYTIME, GTD is the way to go. I admit, implementing it based on the book alone is a tedious task -not because it is complicated, but because a few habits need to be established...and it takes time. It is like reading an encyclopedia, few have the patience to read it past page 200...

Or you can Google it… there’s a massive volume of info on GTD online. David Allen wrote the original version of GTD in 2001, and it’s been updated since then.
