A. I always find myself underneath the ball instead of behind it. I’ve tried starting my approach farther away from the net or slowing down my first few steps but then I end up getting to the ball way late.

I find this problem with beginner - intermediate players often comes actually from the setter setting way too low. If you watch high level volleyball you often see setting up to 5 meters above the net

Definetely A, plus I've still not the "eye": I can't pinpoint my place in space in the air, as I jump high, and I end up hitting the ball with my arm bent because the ball it's too low XD

Omg this is amazing!! I couldn't figure out why I can hit so much faster/harder/better when ive had to pass a deeper serve with a drop step backwards first....it's my step timing. When I'm further back I have no choice but to create extra space. Pffft....this is such a great fix for me. I'm 6 feet and can cover a lot of ground, so when I pass and leave no room all I get is a one-two up. Amazing. Will work on this. Wow, love how your videos show such great real life examples btw. I love your videos. So well explained. As a self-taugh player, I very much appreciate them ;) It makes me learn new things that I can incorporate in my volleyball. Thanks I'll go with B. I think the things I need to improve is a mixed of the 3 honestly. I think I need to slow down my first 2 steps. I'm probably still going under my ball a bit too much to my liking. And the arm swing is something I discovered not too long ago that I have a lot of things to adjust to hit better my balls. I feel like I'm still playing decent, but I want to improve and play great ;) p.s. It took more than 1 second to answer 🤪

B. I grew up playing basketball in the 90s early 2000s with old school coaches who taught jumping off one foot. At the time, hop-step, euro-step, etc. was traveling, so I never learned how to properly jump off of both feet. It has been a chore to get myself to figure out how to hop into a big two footed jump.

First of all, thank you for what you share. They are really useful for having some great insights. : D In my case the predominant answer is probably A) even if I have two other problems which are going too far under the ball and not keeping the elbow high. Anyway, staying on the timing, let's imagine a perfect set. At minute 4:04 you say that in step number 2 (left step for a right handed attacker) you have to see the ball coming down. You mean that you don't have to start putting step 2 on the ground until you see the ball starting to go down? Or do you mean that I don't have to leave step 2 to start jumping into step 3 until the ball is coming down? I would like to focus my attention on this aspect. Thank you guys.

man, that's really difficult to pinpoint. in my case, +50yo, a beginner, playing mostly with younger but equally disastrous players, attacking is definitely the thing that I am dying for. but eventhough nowadays I can somehow hit the ball, I am still miles away from figuring out the process. to cut this short, everything is very much challenging. but after watching your video, I can say that timing and spacing is the thing that I have been doing wrong. it may not be that difficult but that is where I start messing up. by the way what you show about footwork, esp starting cool and slow is another thing that I should focus on. it should be fix timing and spacing as well. great teaching. thanks a lot

Timing and Spacing for sure. My entire quads team is 6'2" and shorter. Starting further back from the net proves difficult to be patient and adapting to hit 3-5 feet off the net. Do these spacing tips apply to teams greater than doubles? We don't often face blockers at the net as we are not a hit threat normally, but your videos have improved our game! Keep up the good work!

I would say it is an important skill to learn no matter the number of people on the court. As long as your timing step is good than you should be able to get to any set. If you like hitting sets that are super tight then this idea will be tough to do. I think you will see your attacking increase if you start hitting sets a little off the net.

I’m from Illinois and the weather doesn’t allow for outdoor volleyball. With COVID it’s tough to go to gyms/ indoor courts due to capacity restrictions. What would be a good way to practice these during the colder seasons? BTW I’ve made improvements on almost all other aspects of volleyball from you guys. I’d say setting was the most helpful. C first, if I ever have issues hitting out or in the net it is the leading arm being low. I typically hit much harder and get more kills even if my spacing is too close to the net. The next level is always spacing, to see block and open angles instead of staring at the lights in the gym ceiling...

Depending on HOW short or tall you are, you might want to release the idea of the "snap" ... some coaches teach that as a way of getting players to hit ON TOP of the ball... If you aren't above the net, you wouldn't necessary want snap on top of the a ball... I'd work more on accuracy and CARVING the ball...
